You know, I really hope this goes well for Pearl, but at the same time, she could be setting herself up for bad times here. There's "having a type" and then there's "pursuing a relationship with someone because they remind you of your dead lover." This could be either case, but the latter is not healthy.

Yeah, I'm actually kind of expecting a 'things don't always work out' sort of lesson at some point. We've had an explicitly toxic / abusive relationship but I can't think of one that just didn't really go anywhere or didn't meet expectations. Maybe she'll turn out to be a racist.

There hasn't been a specific episode highlighting it directly, but I think Garnet used to have more of a problem being too distant/opaque. As the show has progressed, she's become more affectionate and emotionally available to Steven than I think she used to be, which is nice.

That's been a thing since "Future Vision" though. Like that's where my perspective on her character really started to change from "OK this one's the mysterious badass who's quiet and enigmatic," because she is refreshingly affectionate and playful and familiar with Steven in a way she isn't with other characters.

the wise gem bowed her head solemnly and spoke: "theres actually zero difference between good & bad quartzes. you imbecile. you fucking moron"

Garnet's flaw is that she's so self-assured and confident that she doesn't always understand or acknowledge when her teammates are struggling, and her "kick rear end first, ask questions later" style can get in the way (see: Catch and Release)

This episode loving ruled i'm so happy Bad Pearl is canon and also that she's hot for a cool punk chick aaghhhh

I know Steven Universe has some pretty clear but not-elaborated alt-history stuff going on, but given that the Crystal Gems were (probably) in Delmarva when the USA became independent and (probably) have been ever since, surely the Gems would have gotten American citizenship by now, either by being within the territory of the Colonies when the USA became the USA, or I guess legally they might count as "natives" and therefore would have gotten citizenship through whatever the SU equivalent of the Snyder Act is. Or they were granted citizenship at some other point because they killed Kaiser Wilhelm or Hitler or something.

They're probably eligible for citizenship several times over at this point, is what I'm saying.

Problem is that eventually their legal identities are like 80 years old and none of them look older than 30, or worse, they are the only US citizens who are 200+ years old. They don't just qualify for citizenship several times over; as unchanging immortals they'd have to recreate their legal identities every few decades.

I'm sure they could, I'm just not sure why they would. Like where would you even work that reveal into a normal SU episode that wouldn't feel incredibly forced and out of place or veer into Very Special Episode territory? I think the most you'll have to go on is dreams and maybe some board artists' tumblr post down the line.

Maybe it's because I'm coming off of binge watching this poo poo but it's still fresh in my mind that Pearl had a whole musical interlude where she sang about how she's still holding a torch for the woman she loved who chose someone else. So I mean not that this assessment of its Gay Levels is wrong, but "Pearl's super into ladies" is strongly enough established to me that nothing that happened is, hm, strikingly gay to me. idk

eta: Similarly, it seems like I saw "Hit the Diamond" yesterday because I practically did. The Gay Levels seem pretty consistently high when you watch all of season 3 in one day.

"Go on until you're stopped."
Garnet is basically above Steven's head, and the show is framed from Steven's perspective. The show goes into Pearl and Amethyst's flaws because Steven actually knows what those flaws are.

Since Garnet has attained a level of self-actualization above anybody else in the show, her flaws are basically left unstated (and it's a sign of the show's quality that we can still tell what they are and that they're intentional).

Wow. Rude. Please do not troll me or others in the future. Thanks.

To others reading: it's actually an 'ironic' trolling meme for people to say Allen Gregory is bad when, in fact it's actually good. The intended humour comes from saying the opposite of what is true, which I find a bit uncreative and mean, in my opinion.

Spoilers are lifted now the episode's aired.

I think it's sorta well established that everyone already knows about the gems and they're part of history. They're not treated as celebrities or anything though, which is a bit odd, more like just another part of the Earth I guess, despite their rarity and significance. I'm guessing they'd always get tangled up in red tape, since they are such a special case, never fitting into the boxes on any government systems. They could probably get a driving license if they really tried, but they don't seem to meddle in human affairs much, so I can imagine them giving up almost instantly at the slightest sign of resistance. After all, they probably don't really need to worry about the government or police or anything, they did save the world after all, so I doubt they'd want to go after them, plus the can always outrun, outwit or outpower any human authority with incredible ease.

My thought here is that there's less than a half dozen of them and they have actual magic powers so they can skirt the law/throw the feds off their trail any time they need to. But if the idea is that they've been living on the east coast since before the US existed so they should effectively have citizenship, well, whatever documents they have probably at least need to be freshened up every few decades to avoid needing to fish 19th century files out of the national archives if they want to register to vote.

Dunno how well established their status as unaging alien sorceresses is in the nation at large tbh. The flashbacks when Greg met Rose gave me the impression that few people know about the at all because few people bother jumping the fence. From the very first episode, the "That's why the people of this world believe in..." line has seemed a bit ironic since not even their next-door neighbors really seemed to know what the gently caress is up.

eta: Like, very little about Ronaldo's character makes sense if we assume that people generally understand that four strange immortal magic-using women with gemstones sticking out of their skin live under a lighthouse in an east coast seaside town and saved the world 5000 years ago.
