Frankly I'm amazed that people like that get funding at all. Hand me some VC billions; at the very least I promise I won't defraud everyone involved. What were her qualifications other than 19 yr old drop out with some networking advantages? Stupefying. She just lied and got hundreds of millions in initial funding. I can get an Uber right now and it'll take me where I want to go. It's just a question of believing in their prospectus and business strategy. There's a tangible thing to point to and say 'this company does this.' Even if the thing is just a stupid bicycle that straps over your shoulders it's a real thing that they can point to and talk about. This woman just completely made some medical device up which put hundreds of thousands of people a year at risk because their doctors depended on results from Theranos machines to make diagnoses. When asked how it works, she just said 'it does some chemistry to get a reaction which is translated into results through chemistry.' well the interesting part about Theranos is that they were actually outsourcing the testing (LOL) to university / hospital labs when they had adequate blood samples (the size of the sample required for testing is another issue they bullshitted people on) and not saying anything about it. All of those bullshit SV companies get money because their founders come from extremely monied families and went to Ivy Leauge universities. The Theranos founder grew up in the richest neighborhood in Houston (River Oaks) and went to the most expensive primary school in the state then went on to Harvard.

The company I work for invested 300 million in that steaming pile of poo poo, but from that article it sounds like most of the investors promised money, but few actually parted with the full funding before certain targets were met. It's amazing how far you can go on a couple hundred million in cash and a whole lot of optimism.

I studied Journalism at one point and it seems like asking the harder questions tends to get you labeled as a hard rear end and unpleasant to deal with so you'd get less work as a result. So you have to walk on egg shells when you report so you just go for the easier questions and no one wants to be the one to open the floodgates and call "Bullshit!" first. Once poo poo DOES hit the fan then we get to see hard investigative reports like that Theranos story. That's just my observation and I'm completely talking out my rear end. H.P. The whole point is that they're only allowing simple, non-intrusive and malware-free ads. The moment Adblock starts allowing lovely ads that clearly have not been properly vetted through then that crowd will get angry again. I wonder if anyone has ever tried to make someone feel bad about using ad blockers in real life, and not just on internet forums. Like, imagine trying to explain to a normal, well adjusted person that they're immoral for not watching ads. You would become the office dumbass pariah.

I don't really mind non-malware or less annoying poo poo like banner adds. I have never actually clicked on as google seems to only show me stuff I was already interested enough in to search for. Like, If I am looking at winter jackets, it will show me, days later, the exact jackets I was looking it.
