Whenever I hear about a Silicon Valley billionaire getting their poo poo pushed in for fraud I get a little happy feeling in my happy place. When it's reported on well and in a great narrative from a reputable journal my stiffy gets a little bigger.

e: reading this story it becomes more and more apparent that journalists have a hard time asking hard questions in the moment (I know, I was one) but it's interesting how much we allow hype to drive stories instead of the other way around. Theranos shares very similar beats with NMS for just saying "It'll be incredible and great" and no one really digs any deeper.

She just lied and got hundreds of millions in initial funding. Aside from journalists being lazy, someone failed to do their due diligence in a big way.

We hear about these things all the time, from Über to NMS to Theranos and especially with food delivery apps. All it takes is some charisma and high hopes to get that initial investment, and then it's just snowballing from there.

Mods please change the thread title to:

"It generally works like this: the venture capitalists (who are mostly white men) don’t really know what they’re doing with any certainty—it’s impossible, after all, to truly predict the next big thing—so they bet a little bit on every company that they can with the hope that one of them hits it big. The entrepreneurs (also mostly white men) often work on a lot of meaningless stuff, like using code to deliver frozen yogurt more expeditiously or apps that let you say “Yo!” (and only “Yo!”) to your friends. The entrepreneurs generally glorify their efforts by saying that their innovation could change the world, which tends to appease the venture capitalists, because they can also pretend they’re not there only to make money. And this also helps seduce the tech press (also largely comprised of white men), which is often ready to play a game of access in exchange for a few more page views of their story about the company that is trying to change the world by getting frozen yogurt to customers more expeditiously. The financial rewards speak for themselves. Silicon Valley, which is 50 square miles, has created more wealth than any place in human history. In the end, it isn’t in anyone’s interest to call bullshit."

But those at least all deliver functioning products. I can get an Uber right now and it'll take me where I want to go. It's just a question of believing in their prospectus and business strategy. There's a tangible thing to point to and say 'this company does this.' Even if the thing is just a stupid bicycle that straps over your shoulders it's a real thing that they can point to and talk about.

This woman just completely made some medical device up which put hundreds of thousands of people a year at risk because their doctors depended on results from Theranos machines to make diagnoses. When asked how it works, she just said 'it does some chemistry to get a reaction which is translated into results through chemistry.'

That's "they asked me how well I understood theoretical physics chemistry. I said I had a theoretical degree in physics chemistry. They said welcome aboard."

well the interesting part about Theranos is that they were actually outsourcing the testing (LOL) to university / hospital labs when they had adequate blood samples (the size of the sample required for testing is another issue they bullshitted people on) and not saying anything about it.

All of those bullshit SV companies get money because their founders come from extremely monied families and went to Ivy Leauge universities.

The Theranos founder grew up in the richest neighborhood in Houston (River Oaks) and went to the most expensive primary school in the state then went on to Harvard.

AC has has decades to adapt, and never did, choosing instead to raise property taxes as casino revenue fell.

Yeah, NJ is amazing because you have some of the richest suburbs in america, then you cross a street and you're in grinding third world poverty. Like Cherry Hill cops basically sit on the border with Camden and pull over every car that passes, like they're defending the homeland from marauders. I'm not even sure if Camden has a police department anymore. NJ was at one point, and probably still is, the political corruption capital of the country.

BofA doesn't assign, they have you make it up when you first activate your card

I studied Journalism at one point and it seems like asking the harder questions tends to get you labeled as a hard rear end and unpleasant to deal with so you'd get less work as a result. So you have to walk on egg shells when you report so you just go for the easier questions and no one wants to be the one to open the floodgates and call "Bullshit!" first. Once poo poo DOES hit the fan then we get to see hard investigative reports like that Theranos story. That's just my observation and I'm completely talking out my rear end.

Are you clinically stupid or something?

The whole point is that they're only allowing simple, non-intrusive and malware-free ads. The "I only block ads because of annoying pop-ups and malware!" crowd, which includes me, is obviously going to be silent.

The moment Adblock starts allowing lovely ads that clearly have not been properly vetted through then that crowd will get angry again. And rightfully so, because gently caress any site that has adverts that are NWS, noisy, content-covering or exploit-ridden.
