The commercials were bad, the preview was bad and gave the impression the cast had about 3 minutes to memorize their lines and prepare - it's never going to be good. I liked Michael Weatherly in NCIS, back when I still watched it. It's too bad they gave him this. Why did he leave NCIS anyway?

Not the same kind of show. Aftermath is more serious, it's more :wtf: than anything. It's apocalypses atop apocalypses. Kinda weird, but fast paced and oddly fun.

edit; there is kind of subtle dark humor but not the kind that would make you laugh intentionally.

yeah I'm not sure what's so amazing about that episode

They lean way too hard on the "Something you can say about ______, but not your partner" thing in Scenes From A Hat, but that can't be any worse than one answer an episode being about sex/jacking off/penises/blowjobs in Family Feud in the last few years. That must be fun having to randomly explain to your kid when "PULLING HIS PUD" is the #2 answer to a question with 21 responses. Welcome to the 21st Century.

In the episode I mentioned, the sporadic engagement thing was fun, I guess, from Brad moving the woman in the same manner as they'd move he and Colin in the game they were setting up to them riffing Aisha getting emotional about it (Colin's "HE SAID YEEEEEEEEEEEES"). I got a laugh out of Colin's seemingly sincere disdain for the game they were playing during that part, too ("As if this couldn't get any better!..."). I normally don't like the musical games, but the Leg Crack song was fun for its throwing Brad off ("And now...I am stallin'...") and Jeff singing "I JUST KILLED COLIN MOCHRIE" in a fake British accent after unintentionally knocking him off the stool.

That said, I forgot this happened:

w/r/t Whose Line, at least they managed to start airing more than the same three games every episode and toned down the celebrity guest stars a tad. It's not high comedy art, but it's better than a redux of a decades-old show using long-time vets has any right to be.

And it occasionally uses the looser content guidelines to walk right up to the edge of taste without going over, which is always fun to watch:

To its credit, the last season where they blew up the premise and started having the documentary actually air was actually good. Not up to its earlier standard, but way better than the prior two seasons would lead you to believe. They managed to get a handle on a few characters they'd completely lost control of and it had a very satisfying ending.

The last season was one of the better ones for sure and it had one of the best finales I've seen from any sitcom. Most sitcom finales fail to deliver, but it might have actually over delivered.

The sound guy was dumb, but I think it would've landed a little better had they not just done a (somehow much) lazier version of it with Cathy.

I was a huge fan of the UK office, so I tuned in to the beginning of the US version with high hopes and was horrified. It seemed like a total awful lovely version of the thing I liked. I gave it another shot in season 3 and was hooked. It was a great show on its own merits and I watched every episode as they aired from then on till the end. Though it dipped a bit in quality, it was still pretty good even in later seasons.

Season 8 is a season of two halves. Everything's good -- Florida arc's great -- until Nellie takes over the office. Then the show never, ever recovers. Season 9 is unbearable for me, even the saccharine finale.

Best seasons were 2 to 6.

Oh, wait, right, I hated Nellie. I just must have smoothed my memories of the show like you do with a thick layer of icing on a cake, back and forth till the parts that stick out don't anymore. Totally forgot about her and how awful and annoying she was. I know that was the point, but it doesn't make it better.

There isn't a Longmire thread, but I know a couple people here are watching it. I have 2 episodes left, but I just wanted to say, I love how well this show does flawed characters. Walt Longmire is a good man. Is he guilty of a lot of the misconduct he's being accused of? Hell yes. But he's not guilty of wrongful death. Is he a good cop? Yes. But he hates Jacob Nighthorse so much it impairs his judgement. Consistently. Like it's been 5 seasons, and he really does have a vendetta against Jacob that is getting in the way of him getting poo poo done.

Also this poo poo is ramping up to have the most downer ending yet. At least Henry maybe go the Red Pony back...

Second Lethal Weapon episode was way better than it had any right to be. I don't think Matt Miller really "gets" Lethal Weapon (as little as there is to get), and I think the heightened actiony tone of it doesn't really mix well with its attempts to explore grief, but I am having a lot of fun.

I haven't seen the second episode yet (watching it tonight), but I just rewatched the movie, and honestly there's not much there. It's a fun movie, don't get me wrong, but the characters in the pilot are almost better developed than the characters were in the first movie. The action is also pretty similar in style and tone. Don't tell me about the second episode, I'll go talk about it in the thread when I've seen it. I haven't really seen any of the movie sequels, so I can't really tell how much of the tone of the show is informed by them, but if I had to guess, I'd say there's probably an influence there.

edit: I guess I should ask if the sequel movies are worth watching at all. Are they?

Yeah the new season of Longmire was fun as hell, but he does seem to slowly be morphing into the villain in his own story in a lot of ways. The obsession with Nighthorse, neglecting the hell out of his daughter, brawling with Henry, etc. I wonder how much of it is the result of the repeated head traumas over the years—as the doctor pointed out in the start of the season, that poo poo's going to start to have an effect. If they do have another seasons—and they sure seem like they will— then I'm wondering if Walt totally losing it is going to be a major theme, and how badly he's going to lose his poo poo over Cady and Nighthorse getting closer. A lot, I'm guessing. Also I will be super pissed if they actually kill off Henry.

It's probably too late now for this season, but we should make a thread whenever the next one comes out.

Lethal Weapon 2 skews much more heavily to the comedy side of things than the original, but it's still pretty good -- just not nearly as hard-boiled as the first. The third movie is pretty rough but it all rebounds nicely with the fourth.

It's probably too late now for this season, but we should make a thread whenever the next one comes out.

A big theme with Longmire as a character is that he's smart, but he's consciously and intentionally backwards in his ways. He is literally a stubborn cowboy. He doesn't cope with change well. In some sense, his stubborness is him playing to his strengths, but it's also become a coping mechanism he uses to shield himself from uncomfortable truths.

It's why i really like the show. The characters are flawed, but in really realistic, human ways. Not in broad strokes "here is archetypal character with archetypical weakness that effects the plot in a poetic way". It's much more organic than that. Like how Henry is a well meaning guy, and he's smart and enough of a badass to try being a vigilante, but he's not a criminal mastermind and he's constantly loving up, not because he's incompetent, but because he's in over his head.

And how Nighthorse is a vane, antagonistic, ambitious, slimy guy, but he's not really that bad. He has good intentions for his tribe, but his tribalism (no pun intended) constantly stokes the fire between him and Walt, to both of their detriments. Like since the very first season, almost every time they've been in a room together there's this "maybe they will finally realize that they can accomplish their mutual goals if they just bury the hatchet" AND THEY NEVER DO.

It's like the opposite of most shows where really dramatic emotional decisions by characters come out of no-where to steer the plot. In Longmire, it is the character's longstanding natures that keep them on a path of conflict.

I definitely agree that things seem to be coming to a head this season.

it's also the case that, seeing how good this show has become, the early part of the first season seems really bad in comparison. The Walt from season 2 onward never would have done the macho bullshit he pulled in the first season like shooting that guy and leaving him without medical attention in the first episode, or all the intimidation involving animals.
