I am really happy to see this thread exist. I've probably always liked synth in one form or another from loving low budget action or sci-fi movies and Hong Kong action movies from the 1980s that made heavy use of it for budget reasons. Liking John Carpenter and Italian stuff like scores by Fabio Frizzi also helped too.

What really kicked it off was, in the most random way possible, coming across Gunship. Amazon randomly put up a "you may like this", and liking the art I gave it a shot. Just loved pretty much the entire album. From there it was just finding more and more.

I think I gravitate to Dark Synth, but that's because it reminds me of film soundtracks that I liked. Perturbator for example is extremely my poo poo. A hilarious moment Perturbator moment occurred when I was working with some friends. I had Bluetooth headphones on and got a call so I had to switch to my phone. For some reason a few minutes later my phone just starts blaring out the Humans are Such Easy Prey, which leads to my friend screaming, "AHhh The Terminator is kicking in the door and is going to kill us" which made us as all collectively lose our poo poo for a good two minutes. That say FM-84 and Running the Night. Really the stuff I like the most could be from a soundtrack or the songs featured in something like Cobra or a Cannon movie, so it doesn't have to be entirely dark or vocal free.

Actually this kind of sums it up nicely (granted a lot of those movies used full orchestras)

I have a bit of an obscure request. If anyone remembers the youtube channel Maniac Synth, they used to upload synthwave stuff and have huge playlists of tracks, with thumbnails taken from old horror movie posters. They were taken down about a year ago, but I just remembered one track they posted. I don't remember who the artist was or the actual title, but I want to say it had the word "Dream" in it. The thumbnail was top down of a woman lying surprised in bed. Does anyone have any idea what I'm talking about? I really liked that track and it'd suck to never be able to find it again.

I knew that channel pretty well, and I also hate that its videos vanished into the ether, but I don't know what song you're talking about.

Oh, I did some quick searching and found the image they used was one of the original posters for Nightmare on Elm Street.

Probably still doesn't help much, the channel had tons of tracks, but maybe it'll jog someone's memory.

Finding lost synthwave/outrun tracks is a nightmare. I've spent hours looking for a track that was on YouTube that sampled 'Rhythm of the Night' that I really dug but I can't find a trac of it.

It was more kind of an ambient track, like something from one of Pert's earlier albums. It was classified as darkwave by the channel, I think.

I have found it! Not the track itself, though, just the name and artist. I dug out my old years old iPod, checked my crappy old Youtube Music Player app which isn't even on the App Store anymore, and found it in my history. The name of it was "Electric Disection - Futuristic Nightmares", and if it was a track exclusive to that channel I'm going to scream

Immediate Edit:

I'm finding the best thing to do is to just jump on soundcloud and subscribe to songs you like and the artists that make them and just see what flows. Sometimes you get a good string that leads to other artists and sometimes you get people that like and follow awful poo poo so you unfollow those. Plus, anytime that a person you follow makes a new song you get it right in your feed.

Carpenter Brut had a version of his song "Chew bubblegum and kick rear end" that used to be on his soundcloud, it was the same except it had vocals. I can't find it anywhere now. It's gone from soundcloud, can't find it via google or youtube.

So Audioshield, the VR music game for the Vive that works with music you feed it recently updated and a big part of the update was that it dropped SoundCloud support. Instead now the game has YouTube support. See, before this you could search on SoundCloud and pull up music from there to play with. Not anymore. The reported reason is because SoundCloud is moving to become a paid subscription service ala Spotify and has cut off outside applications from using its library any longer.
While I really like SoundCloud for discovering new music I really can't see subscribing to it. Why do that when I can buy directly through Bandcamp?
