Not pleasant when angered.
A late bit of Shin Mazinger Zero had Sayaka getting a new mech, that utilized an incomparably skimpy pilot suit that had neural connecters that connected to...well...It's pretty loving NSFW.

A lot of Nagai's works use a lot of brutal violence. God Mazinger the manga alone features pages of innocent villagers getting wiped out to show how evil the evil guys are. Another series Susanoo, I quit reading as it got REALLY dark and depressing.

Never underestimate the lengths a villain will go to just to be a dickhole even if it's a complete waste of time. It's not even the first time this trick has been used! In the old Mazinger Z manga Count Brocken has a mechabeast which is covered in embedded glass chambers, which he proceeds to fill with women (that he's stripped naked for some reason possibly involving Nagai's love of titties) so there's not a single point on his mechabeast that can be be attacked without killing someone. I believe they actually use that bit in SRWZ3 to some extent.

Yeah, Brocken does actually use that bit in Z3.1 in the fourth stage. Except it's also rigged with explosives so he's not allowed to attack anything. You all remember that stage as "wait what the gently caress how did I game over" if you've played Z3.1.

Personally, I'd advise just reading the area, while using the story summary on the wiki as a guide.

The great thing about Mazinger ZERO is that you can easily understand what's going on, even without dialogue.

Ask me about being the best dad ever.
The second and third missions of the route split are free choice but I'm staying in order because the other one is PoD-centric. As always, screw PoD.

Location: La Vie en Rose

We open with Amuro on the phone with Goat, a Nergal employee. The company has sent over something and Goat is sure it’ll be very useful to him: a Psycoframe!
It seems that Neo Zeon contracted Anaheim to develop it during the previous war; with the defeat of Haman by the AEUG and the Federation, the thing was supposedly locked away within Anaheim itself.
Amuro figures Nergal went through some less-than-legal means to snag the thing but Goat will leave that to his imagination. Regardless, since the Psycoframe is something that supposedly doesn’t exist, it’ll be wholly up to Amuro to decide how he’ll use it.

Amuro wonders what Nergal stands to gain from doing this but Goat says they’ll be more than satisfied if he just pops the thing into his new Gundam prototype and helps the Nadesico B. Simple enough, considering Amuro was planning to rendezvous with Bright’s team soon.
Sending regards to the company president, Amuro and Goat end the call.

So, Amuro turns to Chan and asks her to see to the Nu Gundam’s finishing touches. She’s not too sure about all this and while Amuro says he never met one Akatsuki Nagare, Nergal’s president, he’s heard the guy was aboard the Nadesico A way back then.
Thus, he’d like to think the guy’s someone who simply has a proper grasp on the hardships of the front lines. Chan respectfully submits that she's not heard many good rumors about Akatsuki –he must have some ulterior motive. Hmm. Well, as Amuro figures that back if “he” was with the other side, he’d probably have done the same thing.
But never mind that. As Amuro requests that the Psycoframe’s installation be sped up, he gets called up to the bridge.

Emary, the La Vie en Rose’s captain, tells Amuro that the Nadesico B’s coming over – they’re in need of some resupplying after their battle at the moon. Raizou Kasshu, Domon’s father, also confirms that his son and Rain are aboard. Good of them to come over, as it’ll allow him to give Rain the retuned Rising Gundam.
Amuro’s surprised that she’s also going to fight and while Raizou tried to dissuade her, Rain is as firm as Domon. Emary, ever the romantic, confesses to be a bit jealous of her for always being together with her beloved – even if it’s in battle.
Amuro sees where this is going and begs Emary not to trouble Bright, lest it get him in hot water with Mirai. “Don’t you worry – Captain Bright’s only my dream boyfriend, that’s all. Still… I wish someone would, just once, confess their love to me with the same passion Domon did for Rain…” she sighs wistfully.

Raizou asks if she, like Amuro, was there when it happened but, no, she’s only seen it in the army’s recordings. The fact that Domon’s yelling is so readily available for all to see makes Amuro feel for him a bit.
But the conversation’s suddenly interrupted when sensors pick up the Giganos on approach!

I never mentioned it before but, prior to the title card, the game gives you a nice sweeping view of the battlefield. Lets us see the La Vie en Rose up close.

Mission 16 (Moon Route) – Blue Meets White

It’s Maillot and his groupies, wasting no time in getting in touch with the ship and demanding everyone to disarm and surrender; Amuro’s heard of the Giganos’ Char clone ace, the Blue Hawk, and Maillot gives us sixty seconds to comply or they’ll open fire.
The Nadesico’s still five, six minutes away, so it falls on him to buy time with the Nu Gundam. Chan protests, saying the enemy’s too numerous, but he cannot simply surrender and let them steal the mech.
He tells Chan not to worry, to put the other mecha into safety mode and retreat with Emary and crew to the deeper blocks. And off he goes.

I’m of a mind that if you’re going to use CCA and not have Beyond the Time, then you might as well have this one.

: Ah! A Gundam?!
: I’ve never seen that one before… So that’s the new model, eh?
: There’s the Earth, Moon, Capella, Vega… which means the Nadesico will be coming from that way.

: OK. Now I’ve about four minutes to just make it there…
: The personal mark on that unit… Can that be Amuro Ray?
: What?!
: Amuro Ray, as in the first Gundam’s—?!
: Yes. The pilot of the dreaded machine, once called “White Devil” by Zeon forces.
: What is someone like him doing here…?!
: I’d wager it’s related to that prototype’s development.
: Heh… my cup runneth over. I’ve always wanted to meet this man.
: Alright, let’s see how many of them I can lure out…!
: I’ll seize Amuro Ray and the Gundam; the Practice Squad will provide support. All remaining troops, occupy the La Vie en Rose.

Mission Objective: Amuro reaches the marked point within four turns
Mission Failure: Amuro fails to do so or is shot down
This mission’s actually a bit harder than I originally expected. While Amuro can more than take care of himself, Maillot is still an even match and will pull very decent numbers against him. Be very careful, keep Focus on at all times and always move Amuro as far away as possible.
You’ll want him to get a whole lot of distance not only to make the time but as a safety measure for future events. The Nu Gundam’s unupgraded, so it’s unlikely to survive two hits even with its shield.

Nu Gundam (Amuro Ray)
Pilot Skills:
  • Newtype L3
  • Sword Cut L4
  • Shield Defense L4
  • Leadership
Mech Features:
  • I Field (Nu) – reduces all beam-type damage by 900
Spirit Commands:
  • Focus (10)
  • Alert (10)
  • Fury (25)
Amuro’s Voice Actor: Tohru Furuya (other known works: Tuxedo Mask in Sailor Moon, Ribbons in 00 Gundam, Pegasus Seiya in Saint Seiya and MANY more)

The prototypical Gundam pilot, Amuro has always been one of the most reliable folks in SRW. His stats are always great and his standard Nu Gundam never disappoints, having an even mix of melee and ranged attacks (though Amuro prefers the latter, so Hit & Away could be nice) with HUGE reach.
His naturally high Sword Cut skill level makes him quite likely to parry attacks and pairing a strong Newtype power with a cheap focus (buy him SP regen and it’ll be free) also makes him extra dodgy. Finally, he’s outright got the highest baseline Range and Skill stat across all the pilots we get in the game. From a mechanical standpoint, there’s no reason not to use him.

Run away!

Enemy Phase!

Incidentally, remember how I said to keep focus on at all times? I did not expect Maillot to be as fast as he is… and now he's got 95% chance to hit.

: I thank the heavens for allowing this encounter, Amuro Ray!
: He really is gunning for me…!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fITNqCXimNc
Jesus Christ, I think that would’ve been a oneshot without the shield... And missing a 70% shot only pours salt on the wound!

You little prick, you…

: My Jagd Gelf has enough firepower that I can take him on!
: Maybe but what good will that extra firepower do if you can’t hit?

Whew.

The common mooks are headed for the ship.

Player Phase!

Now I remember to cast Focus and off we go.

Enemy Phase!

And here he comes again.

: Why is someone who once supported the AEUG and Karaba fighting against the Giganos?!
: Because there’s very little difference between your group and Neo Zeon!

Much easier now. When one of the regular mooks reaches the La Vie en Rose, the plot kicks in.

: They’ve broken into the La Vie en Rose’s area… Hold on for just a bit more, Captain Emary!

: ! They had more troops lying in wait?!
: Mr. Maillot, were here to assist.
: I don’t recall ever asking you to do such a thing.
: You didn’t. But they have to be lured over here; thus, we were sent.
: You mean the Nadesico? Fine, do as you will.
: That was our intention from the start.
: What are those units…?!
: C-Captain Emary, this isn’t looking good…!
: …!
: drat it, I’ve no choice! I need to get back there!
#1: That is not necessary.
#2: Yep, you let us handle this!
: !

: It’s…!
: The Gundam Rose and Gundam Maxter…!
: The Shuffle Alliance?!
: YEAAAH! Chibodee Crockett, the Queen of Spades, and…
: George de Sand, the Jack of Diamonds. We are here in the defense of this grand rose.
: This is Amuro Ray speaking. Apologies but I’ll have to leave that matter in your hands.
: OK, we’re right on it!

Everything else closes in but no attacks. Mind, if Amuro were to not be too far along, the Hokushin guys would’ve attacked.
This may not have been too obvious when they were getting wrecked by the Black Sarana but the Hokushin posse are DEADLY accurate, rather evasive and even pack a decent punch. They’re one of the worst mooks in the game, so keep a very close eye on your reals around them.

Player Phase!

Gundam Rose (George de Sand)
Pilot Skills:
  • Super Mode – activates at 120 morale. +10 to pilot's stats; Unit gains +200 HP, +50 EN, +10 Mobility and new weapons
  • Prevail L3
  • Sword Cut L3
  • Support Attack L1
Spirit Commands:
  • Focus (10)
  • Trust (30)
  • Alert (10)
George’s Voice Actor: Takumi Yamazaki (other known works: Isamu in Macross Plus, young Ocelot in MGS, Ferio in Rayearth and many more)

:france:
George is a pretty reliable guy. He’s evenly built as both a melee or ranged attacker, though his unit prefers the latter. Super Mode sets him, and his peers, at the top of the “non-protagonist” bots, so you can find room for any of them in your team without gimping yourself too much.
Mind, if you’re fielding any of the other four Shuffle Alliance members, you’ll get more bang for your buck if you field them all… for reasons.
The Gundam Rose also has a nice MAPW that actually has friendly fire disabled, so he’s a good mook hunter too. His post-movement range isn’t too good, though, so he really wants Hit & Away.

Gundam Maxter (Chibodee Crockett)
Pilot Skills:
  • Super Mode
  • Prevail L3
  • Shield Defense L3
  • Counter L3
Spirit Commands:
  • Strike (20)
  • Accelerate (5)
  • Focus (15)
Chibodee’s Voice Actor: Houchu Otsuka

Same deal as George, minus the MAPW and with a melee focus. His range isn’t huge but it’s decent enough and all his moves are post-movement. Oddly enough, his bread and butter Burning Punch carries a 0 accuracy modifier, which isn’t the best.
Still, he can carry his weight and it’s a loving footballer/boxer mech with magnums. :911:

La Vie en rose provides a nice bonus to evasion and defense, so the two of them will park there and just wreck whatever gets too close.

Boosh!
George’s forced to stick with his Vulcans after moving, not killing anything.

Amuro, meanwhile, has just made it to the designated point.

And the Nadesico arrives right on time, much to Emary’s gratitude. The Hokushin, of course, were expecting them and Judau is quick to recognize their units from Kyoto. Saburouta figures it’s a good chance for us to find out who they are.
Chibodee and George chide Domon for being late to the party and he’s surprised to find the two of them in the area. The situation around the Earth Sphere has more problems than just the Devil Gundam’s resurrection, so George says they’re here to join the fight proper.
Ginga, of course, is hyped to find another two Shuffle Alliance members but Beecha wonders if these are the real ones. Domon is certain, witnessing the brilliance of the Shuffle Alliance’s crest with them.
But explanations can wait until we’ve wrecked every enemy around.

I, having grown used to Maximum Breaks, assumed assisted attacks would auto-pierce shields.

They don’t.

So, face these Distortion Fields, Saburouta is the only one who can get a full hit in. That’s good but he’s also not too good at dodging the counter hit (that said, even Domon gets hit by these guys).
Puru Two’s support attack finishes the first one.

I did this mostly to show off Ruri’s Gravity Blast and, also, what Distortion Fields do to gravity-based attacks.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZm6DkK13Pg
Not good at all.

Hugo, Judau , Roux and Elle work together and whittle down that Rokuren.

There’s some extra Newtype power for her.

While Iino heals Amuro, everyone else stands by. Attacking the surviving Hokushin with them wouldn’t fly.

Enemy Phase!

Maillot’s still focused on Amuro but, this time, he’s got Ruri nearby in case he gets a bad evasion roll.

Whereas the Practice attack whatever’s close.

Too bad for them, that’s a Prevail’d Domon.

Meanwhile, the mooks crash against the immovable walls of France and ‘MERICA. Here’s the rundown:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gi4LgVfUc28

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAN4C7n2Pbc

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vGG-dvRyvLw
And here’s Chibodee’s strongest attack!

All in all, only two survive and that’s only because I wanted to capture other moves.

The Rokurens try to finish off Saburouta but, running Prevail, he dodges and counters (and still had Puru nearby to defend).

Player Phase!

One more Saburouta hit and here’s another dead.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HGQARKH60VM
Might as well show off the cool Fin Funnels. I find this version actually looks better than Z1’s.

Judau and Puru finish off the last Rokuren, finally.

And while they’re not named, the Hokushin cronies give off midboss exp so Puru takes four cheered levels, learning Sword Cut L2.

Eh, I might as well give you something.

There.

Not one to be outdone, here’s George’s own Super Mode attack.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xesa5DRFhiw
La Vie en Rose is all clear.

Now it’s only a matter of finishing what Domon started. First and foremost, get rid of Karl and his EWAC.

Ginga’s Prevail keeps going and going.

From here on out, if I don’t say anything, just assume Karl and Dan went “CAPTAAAAAAAAAIN!” and Werner promised to win next time. That’s all these guys say when they get wrecked!

Puru Two deals with Werner, also leveling Sword Cut.

And Hugo will put Dan in his place.

Dead, dead, dead.

Enemy Phase!

One last attempt from Maillot.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_8b90PcE6o
And he gets parried! For shame!

But it’s profitable for Amuro, who gets a boost to both his sword and shield skills.

Let’s wrap this up now.

: Pull your men back, Blue Hawk! Do you actually think the Giganos’ methods are just?!
: The present does not allow the leeway to debate such things! So long as all is rooted in the realization of our just cause, I’ll be proud of what I do!

: Hey, hawkman! Did you quit chasing Kaine’s group?
: My gaze is set on the big picture. I've returned to space because there is a task that takes precedence over the D Weapons’ destruction!
: Oh, yeah? All the more reason why I can’t let you run off, then!

Maillot knows it’d be dangerous to take any further damage, so he calls for a retreat.
As Harry confirms all enemies gone, Ruri has him dock the Nadesico into the La Vie en Rose.

Maillot leaves under 40% HP… a fact I overlooked and Judau’s attack pushed him past that point. I hadn’t saved for a while, so I elected to just let this be.
If you want to bring him down, just nab any protagonist and get an assist from like Ruri or whoever (Amuro's an extra safe bet due to Leadership).
Finally, here are some battle convos we missed:

: Mine is a unit tailored for electronic warfare… And his functions around Minovsky Particles, so I’ve the advantage…!
: Over-reliance on sensors will get you killed in the battlefield!

--

: Amuro Ray and his Gundam… If I manage to bring him down…!
: This soldier’s still young…! You shouldn’t throw your life away…!

--

: Open your eyes, Shuffle Alliance! Righteousness is on the Giganos’ side!
: Hah! And that “righteousness” had you tossing rocks at Earth? Gimme a break!

--

: Giganos’ Blue Hawk! If you need to use force to make your ideals a reality, then what you’re doing is no different from wanton violence!
: But the Federation learned nothing from Zeon’s and the Titans’ mistakes…! Mankind will not endure if it continues as it has!

Notable drops are a Ramune, a High Spec. Radar and a possible Anti-Beam Coating from Maillot.

Emary thanks Ruri for her help and the girl’s only glad we made it in time. Still, we’re in a hurry, so she’d like the Nadesico to be resupplied ASAP. As that happens, Raizou gets to see his son for the first time in a long while.
Domon is mildly surprised to see his father here but Raizou explains that he came over to see to the Rising Gundam’s adjustments; it’s all done now and ready for Rain to use it and help Domon in battle.

On the subject of the DG Cells, Raizou is just as surprised as anyone else to find that they’re making a comeback after, supposedly, being completely destroyed. George even though he was going mad when he heard the news – plus the fact that clones of them, Sai and Argo were walking around.
George and Chibodee haven’t encountered the Death Army yet, having been conducting their own investigation in colony space. Yet, they found no traces of anything Devil Gundam related even in the Neo Japan Colony it once tried to absorb. Seems like the Death Army’s only showing up in the surface for now.

George figures Sai, Argo and Allenby may have found clues as they were down on Earth. Those three were planning on getting together at Sai’s Shaolin temple and then meet up with the Nahel Argama. Looks like the entire Shuffle Alliance is getting back together; they, as heirs of the Shuffle Crest, can’t well turn the other cheek to this crisis engulfing the Earth Sphere.
Rain, meanwhile, asks Raizou about some data she sent him before and he’s confirmed her theory that the DG Cells have been restored with some tech not even he can precise – not only is his vaccine ineffective, the DG Cells seem more active than before.

He plans on continuing his analysis but there are still far too many unknowns. However, one thing is certain: someone is actively working towards reviving the Devil Gundam and if the Death Army’s up and about, the main unit should be hiding somewhere.
Seems to George and Chibodee that their job is clear: beat the thing back into the ground however many times it comes back. Domon agrees, unwilling to allow those past tragedies to be repeated: “I’m going, father – for my master, Kyoji, Schwarz… and for myself. And this time, I will destroy that monster…!”

Meanwhile, Chan’s checked the data from the recent battle and didn’t see any problems. Amuro is also satisfied – the mech fits him like a glove. Chan still wants to make some final adjustments but he says those will have to be done aboard the Nadesico as there’s no time to waste.
Chan asks if he won’t ask her to come with. After all, while Amuro designed the Nu Gundam, she's the one who's been doing the maintenance. He quickly says no, asking her to stay and help Emary.
Once the Dragoons are mass produced, the Federation is planning to launch large-scale operations on the Giganos. When that happens, La Vie en Rose will become a key strategic position as a resupply point. “So, please, stay here and wait for my return,” he says.
Chan accedes and, after Amuro apologizes, only asks of him: “Come back quick.”

Resupplying is done and both the Nu and Rising Gundam are aboard the Nadesico, Harry reports. With that, the ship will return to its mission of investigating the Hisago Plan.

George has always struck me as the odd one out of the Shuffle Alliance. The games skew him towards being the "balanced" one, and yet he's got more ranged/non-post move attacks compared to the rest. Thankfully, Hit & Away fixes those problems up, but still, George kind of sits in a weird spot compared to the rest of the gang who all want to be in your face punching dudes.

Also, fun fact, Chibodee has an interesting "unit damaged" voice line in this game: a very clear "poo poo!" line read without any Engrishfying (i.e., "Shitto!" or some equivalent).

To be honest, I prefer the normal CCA Main Theme over Sally, I'm not fond of the differences, subtle though they may be (particularly, the rising note in the first bit, it's always sounded janky compared to the smoother Main Theme). That said, it's always great whenever Amuro shows up because Banpresto's kind of cast him as the "best pilot", as acknowledged by basically the entire cast, ally and enemy, alongside Quattro/Char. When they show up, it's never as loud or flashy as when one of the supers shows up, but you know fools are about to get wrecked, because a living legend just entered the fray.

By the way, here's some convoluted VA trivia: Tohru Furuya was recently tapped to play the character of Sabo on One Piece, and old friend of the main character, Monkey D. Luffy. Around the same time, Mayumi Tanaka, the voice of Luffy, was cast as the voice of a young Char Aznable in the animated adaptation of a Gundam prequel story. I find it amusing that the two series wound up, through what I must assume is pure coincidence, putting Amuro and (a version of) Char together, and closely related at that, in another massively popular anime.

Hooray, we finally get Amuro. And once again, he'll be in a series with a mysterious masked individual. However, this time, the masked person is not a rival, but his very own moon bunny (Vega, same VA as Sailor Moon).

Speaking of mass drivers, this is something that's only covered in side materials, but at the start of the One Year War, Zeon used lunar mass drivers to bombard the Earth. For reference, this was during February, so after General Revil escapes and gives his Zeon is exhausted speech, and the Antarctic treaty is signed, but before Project V is even formally written down. The remnants of the Federation fleet end up destroying the mass drivers

I recall Chibodee being from Earth before going to the colonies, but I don't think anyone else's birthplaces are addressed?

gently caress Yeah Amuro! The best Gundam pilot is here... is it fate for him to fight ALL Char clones of any sort?

On Moon Route I went with choice 2 first as mentioned because it's the best mission to level up the UC crew.

I finally understand everything there is to know about axes!
Argo was a space pirate from memory and I think Sai studied martial arts on Earth in China but I don't think either was mentioned as to whether they were born in space or not.

I just cannot remember anything about George though.

In terms of the Shuffle Alliance in this game, I believe it is Domon the best overall.... Chibodee is specialist in Melee, George is best at Range, Sai is the dodgy one and Argo is pure strength.

It's worth noting that while most of the Gundam Fighters are more focused on dodging with heavier-than-usual armor for when they don't, Bolt Gundam is pure Super Robot in terms of dodging and armor. It'll dodge better than, say, Mazinger, but it's definitely meant to tank hits rather than avoid them.

Ask me about being the best dad ever.

Misato reports two available routes to take us to Chongqing: one through the Yellow River and the Qinling Mountains, the other is trailing the Yangtze River by way of Shanghai. In other words, Haruka surmises, the first is through northern China, the other through the south.
Mind, the Giganos have descended upon the north, so the Yellow River route would likely have us being attacked… but the southern one would have us dangerously close to the Tekkoryu territory. Bright opts for the northern route, which is near enough to several Federation bases to get help if worse comes to worse.

Cut to THE Shaolin Temple, where Zuizen and Keiun (with the beard), report Argo’s arrival to Sai. The two fighters greet each other for the first time since the Baam War.
Sai apologizes for calling him all the way here but Argo is fine with it, knowing the Shuffle Alliance can’t sit still with the Devil Gundam making a return. When Argo asks, Sai tells that Allenby will be here soon while George and Chibodee are up in space, meeting up with Domon.
Sai asks Argo to take a seat and have some tea but, before that… Argo goes and attacks! Sai avoids the hit, though Argo still wrecks the floorboards; neither of them seems to have shirked their training.
Zuizen remembers what Domon said and figures that Argo’s one of the reported clones. He’s here looking for a fight and Sai is more than willing to give him one – just outside.

Mission 16 (Chongqing Route) – Bright You Now

Zuizen and Keiun aren’t too keen that they’re busting out the Gundams but Sai counters that they ARE Gundam Fighters. Besides, it’s been ages since he had an opponent he could go all-out against.
That’s all Argo needed to hear, so it’s off to the usual business.

: Gundam Fight!
: Reaadyyyy!
: GOOO!

Simple business, so let’s jump right in. Argo’s deceptively accurate, especially with the unupgraded Dragon Gundam.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxlX733CpTw
Just get him under 50% HP for the plot to kick in.

As things go on, Zuizen and Keiun see in this a recreation of the Guiana Highlands battle. Argo likes what he sees from Sai, though the kid asks if he’s gone a bit soft… or is the old man holding back?
Argo concedes he wanted to go full-force on this but the circumstances have changed; Sai agrees, confusing the two monks. “Heh, I figured out whether you were the real one or not the second we crossed fists,” Sai explains. Turns out this IS the real Argo and he was putting Sai through the same test.
Zuizen and Keiun apologize for suspecting him but Argo knows this is just how things are. Sai would like to have tea with his friend now… but they haven’t the time just yet.
“Come on out! We know you’re here!” he says.

And out comes the actual Argo and Sai DG Clones. Sai figures the clones understood they couldn’t fool Domon or any of the Shuffle Alliance folks, so they decided to simply come and take out the originals.
Clone Sai appreciates that they’re so perceptive, as that speeds things up. Clone Argo promises the originals that they’re about to see power far beyond their stature.
Sounds interesting – time to put that to the test.

Dragon Gundam (Sai Saici)
Pilot Skills:
  • Super Mode
  • Prevail L3
  • Sword Cut L3
  • Counter L3
Mech Features:
  • Double Image
Spirit Commands:
  • Focus (15)
  • Accelerate (5)
  • Alert (10)
  • Valor (35) – the next attack does double damage
Sai’s Voice Actor: Kappei Yamaguchi (other known works: Tasuku in SRW Alpha and OGs, Bugs Bunny, Usopp in One Piece, Tobia in Crossbone Gundam games and a billion more)

Bolt Gundam (Argo Gulskii)
Pilot Skills:
  • Super Mode
  • Prevail L3
  • Support Defense L1
  • Guard - -20% damage taken when over 130 morale
Spirit Commands:
  • Iron Wall (20)
  • Strike (20)
  • Invincibe (10)
  • Valor (40)
Argo’s Voice Actor: Hidenari Ugaki (other known roles: Thomas in SRW OGs, Ganryu in Tekken, Birdie in Street Fighter and some more)

:china: :ussr:
Two sides versions of melee attackers: Sai’s speedy, Argo is tanky. They’re pretty much evenly matched in stats, though I tend to prefer the Dragon Gundam. As bulky as the Bolt is, it’s still a Real so you shouldn’t expect it to handle too much punishment without Iron Wall. Comparatively, Sai’ll be dodging left and right when he gets Double Image going.
As far as damage goes, they’re about the same though Argo, as you’d expect, hits a wee bit harder. You can absolutely make use of them both in an endgame team, though.

Let’s get this going.

: Heheheh… You’re bound to that ridiculous power while I’ve embraced it in its rawest form… We’ll see who’s the strongest real soon…!
: …!

Zuizen notes that the clone fights in the same way as Argo.
Still, Argo says that the guy is just a clone. The clone isn’t so sure, what with the marvelous DG Cells on his side.

Enemy Phase!

DG Sai is still coming, but the Argos trade blows.

Player Phase!

Now for you two.

: There’s no way some imitation’s taking me out!
: Hah! It’s you two who cannot win against us!!

Keiun’s also worried: the clone’s technique is exactly the same as Sai’s.
Sai’s actually impressed, quipping that he’s got some pretty nice moves. Granted, the clone promises he won’t be giving props – or anything else – very soon.

Reduce either clone’s HP to get things rolling – DG Sai is obviously flimsier.

: Heheheh…
: Ahahahaha!

: Self-regeneration…
: These two can do that too, huh?
: Heheheh… Our strength’s an even match right now…
: But our bodies can regenerate as many times as needed.
: This isn’t good! Sai Saici and Mr. Argo’s are still humans of flesh and bone!
: Sooner or later, they’ll exhaust themselves, unable to keep up with their regeneration!
: That’s right! Even if you fight until your arms fall off, you still won’t win this!
: …
: …
: Oh, what’s wrong? What happened to that pep from moments ago?
: Heh… these guys’re selling the Shuffle Alliance short.
: A lot.
: What…?!
: Let’s do this, old man!
: Hm!

*Sai goes after DG Argo and vice-versa.*

: Wh-what are you up to?!
: Technique versus power!
: Power versus technique!
: We’re switching things up!
: Morons! Changing opponents won’t do anything!
: So long as we’ve the DG Cells, we cannot lose…!
: Right on! That’s a power none of you have!
: But you’re in that same boat!
: We’ve also got power you don’t… and it’s time we showed it to you!

: Sai Saici, the Ace of Clubs!

: Argo Gulskii, the Black Joker!
: And we, the Shuffle Alliance!
: Will tear that revived monster apart!
: Ooh…!
: It’s the strength of the Shuffle Crests!
: Heheheh, you’ve finally gotten serious, eh…?
: But even busting that out, you still can’t beat us…!
: Save that line for after you’ve won!
: Let’s do this…! Come on!
: Gundam Fight!
: Reaadyyy!
: GOOO!!

Enemy Phase!

Good on them to be sportsmanly and attack the different guy.

This doesn’t take long, so here’s the summary.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMWW89jek74

: His moves are so different!
: I dunno about the real one, but a fake Sai can never pin me down!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHu3EOOveNY

: Hrm…! What is this speed?!
: I’ve been training to beat the old man...! A clone doesn’t really deserve to see this, but I’ll show you what that gave me!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLloq4rZxAk

: Th-This can’t be! The regeneration isn’t keeping up?!
: This is what you amount to when you get stronger without training…!
: Rrrgh! drat it all!!

: Guoorgh! My… My body’s…!
: You see that? That’s the power you don’t have!
: Gr—Graaaaaaah!!

And that’s game. As the monks are overjoyed to have witnessed the power of the Shuffle Alliance, Sai proclaims the score against Argo is now one victory, one tie to him. Argo objects, saying HE is the one with one victory. There’s no time to settle this dispute now, though, as the main event’s arrived: Michelo and the Death Army.
Keiun and Zuizen freak out of at the Gundam Heaven’s Sword as the guy was supposed to have been beaten by Sai and Argo; indeed, Michelo loudly proclaims that he’d been waiting in Hell for when he’d have the opportunity to tear those two limb from limb.
Sai and Argo aren’t impressed, saying it’ll just end as it did before – time for Michelo to go right back to Hell. Maybe, but he insists on taking them along for the ride and, until it happens, he’ll just keep on reviving!

He’s obviously not getting the point, so it falls on Sai and Argo’s fists to get it to sink into his skull. Michelo, however, warns them that he and his peers have also gained new powers of their own.
Michelo taunts them with the question of why they, who were all supposed to have been destroyed, are back around… why did the Devil Gundam revive NOW? Not that he’s going to give them an answer, of course.
Before Michelo can exact his revenge, though…

It’s Allenby and the Nobel Gundam – the Gundam Fighter of love and justice!
She apologizes for taking so long to get here and Michelo is amused to see an “old comrade”. Allenby tells him to get bent and not bunch her with cowards like him who can’t fight without relying on DG Cells.
Michelo laughs, asking if she’d have no problem if he used “that person’s” powers to revive the Walter Gundam as well, then. That tells Sai and Argo that it’s a person who’s responsible for bringing the DG Cells back around and Allenby confirms; that’s why they need to pry out a name from Michelo.
Not happening, because he swears we’re all about to die by his silver legs!

It’s the enemy’s turn, which is good as half of them closes in and speeds up the impending slaughter.

Player Phase!

In comes the Nahel Argama, though Argo mistakes it for the original model. Domon’s told Sai of the new ship, mind.
Torres pings the Death Army and we spot the Shuffle Alliance in the distance – quite the surprise for Kaine, seeing how we were on edge against potential Giganos attackers. Hugo himself is scowling over running into the things, including one of the Devil Gundam’s underlings.
Everyone deploys and Bright gets in touch, offering our support. Sai remembers Bright and figures now he really can’t put on a poor showing. Ayato’s a bit taken aback by Michelo’s unit, surprised it’s a legit Gundam; meanwhile, Michelo has actually been briefed on Ayato and the RahXephon by “that person” and isn’t too happy to see that he’s with our crew.

Nobel Gundam (Allenby Beardsly)
Pilot Skills:
  • Prevail L3
  • Sword Cut L2
  • Support Attack L1
  • Hit & Away
Spirit Commands:
  • Focus (15)
  • Alert (10)
  • Spirit (40)
Allenby’s Voice Actress: Narumi Hidaka (other known works: Lune in various SRWs, Kei in Getter Armageddon, Noel Links in Z.O.E. Dolores and, surprisingly, only a few more)

:sweden:
Allenby deserves better than the Sailor Moon Gundam… As a pilot, she’s on par with any of the non-Domon Shuffles and can absolutely hold her own; the problem is that she’s held back by how middling her unit is. If only it had a Super Mode equivalent.
While it DOES have a combined attack with Domon, the other guys are all superior by their lonesome and get better together. With as few slots as this game gives us, that’s not great.
You can still field her well enough, I guess, but your overall power will take a bigger dip than with the other G Gundam guys.

Gundam Heaven’s Sword (Michelo Chariot)
Pilot Skills:
  • Support Attack L1
  • THAT’S IT
Michelo’s Voice Actor: Kyousei Tsukui (other known works: Straight Cougar in S-CRY-ed, Jimmy Palmer in NCIS and some more)

:italy:
What the hell is that skill list, son?
This guy’s a glass cannon through and through. His Gundam’s got an S in the air which gives him respectable accuracy and stopping power (with long range, too) but he can’t survive worth a drat.
Get defensive measures rolling and watch as he melts away.

Let’s kick things off with Allenby.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pM19LZYquM
Good show.

Sai and Argo each pick a target and go to town. The rest will all die when they inevitably attack next turn.

Meanwhile, our main group will tear their side apart. There isn’t really any strategy involved here – these Death Army units are made of tissue paper, so spread out and kill. Let’s abridge this, yes?

And, boom, that’s the Argama’s side all cleaned out in one turn! :thurman:

Enemy Phase!

Rather than chase down Sai and co. as I expected, Michelo’s decided to pick on Kaine.

: HYAHAHAHAHA! Flaps your wings with all you’ve got, LITTLE FLY, you still WON’T keep up to my Heaven’s Sword!
: Shut your trap! My laser sword’s about to make some yakitori outta that chicken bot of yours!

Easy peasy.

And there goes the rest of the Death Army.

I took the liberty of leaving one alive to showcase Allenby’s Beam Ribbon attack, though!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rU7CHecyKSY

And now we’ll wrap up Michelo.

: Your PATHETIC eyes could never see through my Heaven’s Sword’s moves!
: The Dragon’s not about to be beaten in an air battle!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oamjkNlJqz8
One positive thing about Michelo is how crazy his yelling gets.

: …!
: What is it, Hugo?!
: (The Devil Gundam really is making a comeback… The monster that annihilated our squad…!)

: I’ve acquired new powers! My Heaven’s Sword and I are INVINCIBLE!
: Hrm! Once I’ve grabbed you, I’m wringing your bot into spaghetti! Or maybe I’ll tear a hole through you and make it some macaroni instead!

: HYAAAHAHAHA! Think you can keep up with my moves?!
: Zip it! You better not be thinking that you’re the only one who can turn into a bird!

: This Gundam’s almost like a saucerbeast, switching forms depending on the situation…!
: Why, you…! Don’t you DARE batch my Heaven’s Sword in with those VERMIN!!

: So, how do you wanna be cooked this time? Speak up and I’ll make it happen!
: This damned BRAT! I’ll ram those flags through your HEAAAAD!

: Your body’s once tasted the bliss of the DG Cells… You’re not going ANYWHERE!
: I’m not the same person you knew! Domon and everyone in the Shuffle Alliance taught me what it means to fight and how wonderful bonds forged with your own fists are!

: I wasn’t told to leave you be… so I’m NOT holding anything back!
: Wh-What’s up with him…?!

: Next time, you’re gonna end up way worse than as some fried chicken!
: SHUT UP! Now it’s your turn to be squashed under my boot!!

Michelo’s regeneration isn’t cutting it against us but, of course, he won’t answer Allenby’s questions as to who brought them back to life. And it wouldn’t matter if he did – the end of this word is nigh and, even with all our powers, we cannot stop it!
He runs off and Torres can’t trace him – his signal just vanished. If anything, Sai admits that the guy’s good at running; unfortunate that we couldn’t get any clues as a result.

When Maria asks, Aqua figures this “end of the world” business would mean the DG Cells multiplying and spreading throughout all living creatures; In essence, everything that’s not the Devil Gundam would be absorbed. Maria’s scared at the idea of all being brought together as one and that includes even the Vegan Army, Aqua adds. Dreadful.
Misato and Haruka frown at the discussion but, yeah, Hugo finds Aqua’s description to be analogous to the end of the world. Hell, if the Devil Gundam keeps growing out a control, it could even reach and devour other planets.
Still, so long as Sai, Argo, Allenby and the Shuffle Alliance are around, that won’t happen. By the guidance of their Shuffle Crests, hand-in-hand with their new allies.

Notable loot is a Repair Kit, a Shuffle Crest and a High Spec Sight.

Sai was expecting his group to go and rendezvous with ours, not the other way around; regardless, Bright is very grateful to have them aboard one way or another. They’ve all been briefed by Domon and are in agreement with getting back together.
Meg sees that Bright and the Shuffles already seem to know each other and Argo explains how they fought together against the Devil Gundam. On that subject, Sai is curious as to where his other bros, Amuro and Camille, are.
Amuro, of course, is with the Nadesico and ought to have met up with Chibodee and George. As for Camille, Bright says he’s still recovering from being mind blasted by Scirocco; he was initially in a coma, though eventually recovered. Still, he was in no state to be fighting which is why he didn't join in on the old World Gundam Federation.

At least, Bright says Camille's rehab is going nicely so we needn’t worry. When Maria asks, Sai explains that the World Gundam Federation was a massing of all those units in preparation for the final battle against the Devil Gundam. Quite the impressive sight.
Bright quips how Amuro took a little while to have a good night’s sleep after the whole thing was over. Understandable, considering what the others made him take part in. But Sai won’t tell, not wanting to incur the guy’s wrath. This only makes Maria more curious but them's the breaks.

I dunno if this is ever clarified but, considering I had to search quite a few old 2ch threads and wikis to figure it out, I’ll just say it now lest I forget: it’s implied that Amuro was one of the Gundams who took part in Kyral’s Mandala Enjin Gokurakuoujou (small Devil Gundam spoilers here).
Also, if we consider this game’s quasi-sequel status to Impact, we also had Christina Mackenzie, Shiro Amada, Kou Uraki and Seabook Arno as part of the Gundam Federation. So imagine all of them striking kung-fu poses.

Regardless, Bright says we’ll be hanging around this area for four hours while we gather intel, so Sai offers some Shaolin-style food since we took the time to come all the way up to his home. When Meg asks, Argo explains that the kid’s quite the skilled chef.
Sai’s not one to brag but says he makes a pretty mean Chahan – Megumi and Maria are very interested and even Bright fancies some Chinese food every once in a while. He’s on the verge of offering Misato some when he notices she’s not around; Haruka’s gone, too, Megumi notices.
Where could they be?

: Hmm…
: …Odd…
: What’s wrong, Misato?
: And you, too, Haruka… why are you staring at that Gundam?
: There’s just something…
: Familiar about it.
: ?
: What, is my Nobel Gundam that unique?
: “Unique”, huh…?
: Maybe, yeah…
: ???
: Hey, does this Gundam, by any chance, throw tiaras?
: No, it uses a ribbon and hula-hoop…
: Does it fight “in the name of moon” or something like that, then?
: Can it wrap itself with water, maybe…?
: Oh, but isn’t that more of a “in the name of Mercury” thing?
: Huh? Really?
: …What are those two talking about?
: I’ve no idea…

:allears:

The monks deliver their food and everyone’s pretty impressed. Tap already busy eating a bunch of everything, prompting Light to warn that it’ll get the tastes all mixed up.
Asuka meanwhile, is getting in Kouji’s face for hogging the turntable. Can she grab some dishes for him, then? Why would she ever need to do that?! Standard table manners when eating Chinese food, Kouji argues.
More important to Aqua is what she’s actually eating… frog, Hugo says. And it tastes good, he promises. Next up is some snake eel... that’s edible? Absolutely and Hugo says he often ate everyday snakes during some missions.
“Food around the world is a lot more varied than you think, you know,” he argues. What, would he eat anything, then? Even the mold growing in his room? No, Hugo draws a line there as he doesn’t want an upset stomach (or worse).
Still, it’s clear to Aqua that he’s lead a much more impressive live than she imagined.

Nearby, Ryouma’s a bit miffed that we couldn’t pick up any relevant info regarding the Devil Gundam; Benkei figures the only way to deal with this problem is one step at a time, though.
Akira agrees, though he’s much more focused on the tasty food; Mari is quick to chide him for speaking with his mouth full. Michiru agrees, prodding Ryouma and Benkei that they’re no longer kids and should have better manners.
Daisuke’s already getting seconds from Sai and while Maria wonders if he’s not overeating, he says it’s all to help him power through the progressively harsher combat. “Don’t start with that kinda boring talk, man. Just say it’s because the thing’s tasty and leave it at that,” Boss sighs.

Megumi’s all up in her sister’s grill, asking if she should be drinking beer right now. Haruka and Misato swear it’s just barley tea… except, as Hikaru points out, barley tea doesn’t foam.
It is beer but Haruka promises to wash it down with some coffee and even go run on the treadmill some to burn the alcohol. In that case, Bright suggests they do that right now because they’ve a meeting scheduled for right after this meal. Off go the two sighing ladies, while everyone else keeps chowing down.
Even Rei finds it in herself to join in, asking Sai for some garlic ramen – minus the roasted pork.

Now, everybody, walk like a Jekhar.

(God, these running animations are terrible.)
I'm right near the end of SRW J, and Allenby snuck into my main team because I swear Ribbon Dance does a good 2000 more damage than it should at any given time.

Also,

Do the Shuffle Alliance guys just get Valor really early, or are we already at the point where everybody's getting Valor? I know this game is disgustingly easy, but I didn't think you guys meant it THAT much.

Rom had it when he showed up in 15, though Chibodee and George didn't. Nobody else has it yet, so I'm guessing it'll be around the 20-30 range for most folks.

I'm pretty sure the Tuxedo Mask joke was saved for Alpha 3. And I would've been disappointed if they didn't reference Sailor Moon when Allenby showed up since we have both Moon and Mercury on our team!

This is back in the day when Valor would pop up earlier in games as people leveled up, some learning around now (mid to late 20s, with a few early 20s depending on the pilot) or very soon (early 30s). It wasn't until Z1 that it was changed to be the last spirit command a lot of pilots would learn, usually around the late 30s or early 40s in terms of levels. This is also around the time where games had pilots that learned Valor plus one more damage boosting spirit command (Courage, Soul or Love), just to make things even more crazy. Nowadays, that's a rarity.
