Also, once you learn to parry you're probably going to fall into the trap of constantly parrying and messing up sometimes when there's no room for a riposte anyway. Use the dodge move sometimes, it's a bit awkward to use/look at but it's insanely good and has invincibility frames.

Just want to stress this too. I'm not sure exactly how much of the dodge is invincible, but it sure felt like the answer is all of it.

Skip the VR missions. I really enjoyed the game but trying to get top rank on those was just frustrating and you need to search levels in single player to even find all of them.

I'm pretty sure this is mentioned in the wiki, but it bears repeating: If you're playing the PC version and you can't run it at 60 FPS, you're going to have a poo poo time and the final boss will apparently be nearly impossible, as the timing will be hosed up.

I heard through the grapevine that this got patched, but this is great advice. I lost count of how many tries the final cuts took me but it must have been 50-100. Lower your graphical settings during boss fights if you find yourself missing some tougher cuts.

Oh absolutely. My old machine runs it perfectly fine. But that's more the reason I brought it up. For most people, it is not an issue. For someone that it is, it would be very difficult to track down that the framerate is the reason the bosses are suddenly ruining you and you can't make any cuts. Better to at least be aware of it to start with.

Private actions: Do whatever. The character relationship system is a massive slog, so just play for fun and watch the other mini-endings on youtube.
(One caveat: Filia aka the woman mentioned earlier that you can steal the item-making gizmo from. First meeting is safe, but if you meet her again, do not talk to her.) Her later PA is how you switch the final boss to hard mode.

Battle control: I like full manual on Claude. Especially if you get Bunny Shoes.

It does have the problem of limited resolution options. And the fact that it will always run at your display's lowest supported refresh rate.

I prefer manual battle mode.

Couple other battle notes: You probably will end up controlling Claude regardless of your main character unless you are trying to grind killer move improvements. Claude's ripper is his most useful killer move; when leveled, it hits many times in a wide and tall arc and easily stuns enemies.

If you get Opera, she can learn a killer move that uses very little mp and heals all characters based on how many times it's been used. It's the best healing move in the game when maxed out at 999. That lets you replace Rena with Opera in your battle party for more offensive capability. However, you have to craft the item that lets her learn the move through machinery, which is skill point-intensive to train up.

The Comprehension super specialty slows you down a whole lot during battle but increases your skill point gain at level-up; it's worth the trade.

Use your figurines liberally. You can't really place them incorrectly.

In particular, get a guide down ASAP. Once you have at least one guide down, buy a grip of the horns he sells. With that you can teleport to the guide then from him to any Sanctuary you've unlocked, and the horns are cheap.

Shield tanking is an effective strategy. Every enemy can turn on a dime mid-combo, so rolling behind them isn't really a viable tactic.

Approach it like you would Dark Souls.

Roll animation breakpoints are DS1 style: every 25%. Medium roll isn't bad, on account of shields being generally more useful, but fat rolling makes it very hard to move through enemies.

Items later in the game will make it easier to spam magic, of that's your jam. Early on you'll need to be more conservative.

Keep an eye out for areas you obviously need a movement upgrade for and remember them. There's good loot hidden behind backtracking.

So twohanding big sticks isn't really an option? I admit I can't really imagine Souls combat in 2D... Or, rather, without circlestrafing.

Two handed weapons are fine. You don't need a shield. You can parry with a shield, weapon, or with a gun, Bloodborne style. You can't circle strafe but you can roll through enemies during your iframes or just jump over them.

You'll only find one or two weapons of a given type laying around. You change it into new weapons at an alchemist.

There's two paths through the second half of the game. If you're having a really awful time somewhere you may be able to go another way.

Thanks for the info on the Mass Effect trilogy, it was great. Now I've finished that, I've downloaded the Bioshock Trilogy. I've had a look at the wiki, sounds like solid info, but I didn't see anything about DLC. Is there any, and if so, what is essential game-bettering goodness, and what's expensive bumf?

I don't know the settings off the top of my head, but depending on the level of difficulty you prefer, you might want to turn off certain hints.
By default, it puts little white dots above the heads of characters that can spot you, it provides a minimap and identifies "opportunities."

If you don't want the game to hold your hand so much, you can turn that all off.

My personal preference is to leave it all on.

I'm trying to avoid accidentally reading plot. I'm not looking for what to do I just can't remember where I need to go to pick up the plot again. I forgot how old games don't have quest logs to keep track of what you're working on.

I don't know what point you're talking about. The first time you return to the present is after rescuing Marle in 600 AD and you go back to the castle to continue the story. But it sounds like you've been to the End of Time and know about Magus which means you beat Heckran and have use the portal at Leene Fair to return to 600 AD.

Personally, I'd recommend turning off Opportunities - they're really handholdy, and you get the same hints through ambient dialogue anyway.

If you're spotted by a security camera, you can still get Silent Assassin if you delete the tapes, but you lose the bonus for never getting spotted.
