I'm worried about those Eagle Warriors yeah. In your expert opinion, should I just go with my favorite archer murderphalanx hiding behind a couple wareiors or should I wait for spearmen to take on that UU? What's their ability, aside from being roided out 30% stronger Warriors?

Their strength isn't really in combat performance, even though they are a pretty nice upgrade over regular warriors. What's unique is that they capture the units they kill as Builders, so Aztec development and economy are turboboosted as they wage war. It's a ridiculously strong power, though I'm not sure the AI can take advantage of that ability anywhere near as well as a human player can.

The AI game seemed to indicate that they at least get some of it.

I'm on turn 217 and turns are still completing at a good pace. 8 civs, Small map. I'm using a hard drive from 2009 (I really should upgrade at some point) so I doubt that's your problem. How many AIs are in the game, how's your CPU?

i5 4690k, Large map, I think I was getting some memory leaks in Chrome from leaving it on forever so closing that up might fix it.

Seems I can't split apart units that I've merged into corps/armies despite the game telling me I could do that when it introduced the mechanic.

Does anyone know if there's a "show yields" button somewhere? I'm so used to having this on in civ v that it's a little jarring for me not to have it here

I hear emperor starts the AI off with an extra settler, and I watched a bunch of idiots bumble their way to easy victories on prince for the last month.

People who have played the game, is king the sweet spot difficulty for a V immortal player to start on, or is emperor better?

Yeah, it's under map settings on the buttons over by the minimap. Not lenses, the one next to it.

(I think. It might be two over, I'm taking a break.)

Second button above the minimap, if you click it there should be an option there to show yields

That might be the wrong button since I'm not in game and I can't check, but it's down there somewhere.

FWIW I'm comfortably ahead on King despite not yet have a solid handle on the new mechanics

I'm not an expert, I can't even afford the game, but there are plenty of videos and streams up. They've been kind in letting a lot of people make content for and about it by giving out early codes. It seems like there's more complicated aspects that you have access to in the early game.

Xposting a post I made last night in a different, less related thread:

feel similar to civ 5 bnw in good ways. the tech tree is much more streamlined in i think a positive way, basically splitting the top half and bottom half of civ 5's tech tree into two seperate tech paths that you can research at the same time. districts are not all that similar to Endless Legend (except for the basic fact that they are a thing that you put around your city) but the civic system oddly reminds me of EL in terms of having to make opportunity cost adjustments every 10 turns or so. city development seems like the biggest new thing to wrap your head around if you're used to civ 5, because workers have limited charges and you can't have an improvement and a district on the same hex. getting a feel for adjacencies and how to improve your city seems like it will take some practice

it might be a little too similar to civ 5? religion, Great People, tourism all p much work exactly the same. combat is more or less the same. navigating the terrain is actually VERY different, because you can't use your last movement point to move anywhere anymore, which means you can't do any hill-hopping in the early game, kind of a key scouting strat of civ 5. that small change actually changes the feel of the game a LOT, and i didn't get that impression when i watched preview vids. the biggest changes are in city development, which is kind of the meat and potatoes of the civ franchise, so it does feel like a pretty different game on balance, even if some of the cursory mechanics operate more or less the same

also it's really really pretty, i love the art and the map

edit to clarify: the MECHANICS of combat are the same, but they did make a big tweak of making spearmen and warriors very similar in base strength to emphasize the RPS combat a little more. that change is kind of big. i didn't get too far in the combat tech tree, so i couldn't tell you any more about it

Victim of gross furniture discourtesy.
Whoever at Firaxis thought it would be a good idea to not only release this game with the same broken trade route system Beyond Earth had at launch (trade routes expire, no auto-renew, no marking of previous trade route settings), but to also apply it to counterspying, needs to just go and gently caress THEIR OWN FACE.

So far the AI on emperor is about what it seemed like in the stream yesterday. I started next to the Aztecs across some shallow water and I've totally beaten him into submission with a few galleys. War decs from other AIs have been empty gestures.

On the other hand, I'm totally flailing around in the sim civvy part of the game.

I settled this city thinking I would be able to supplement its early lack of housing with an aqueduct from the river a tile to the west, but it's telling me there's nowhere to build an aqueduct. City's quite poo poo without any housing, is what it is.

Also, for some reason when I mouse over districts in the production menu it's not showing me the adjacency bonuses like it did in the streams. I can't find a setting to change it, and I have no idea why they would have removed UI info over the last month.

I think you need to make the aquaduct next to that river, where you currently have a farm. Aquaducts must essentially connect a fresh water source (river, lake, oasis, mountain) directly to the city center to function. I'm basing that on this guide:

I don't know if it's because I focused so heavily on racing far ahead on tech but I'm constantly starved for hammers and have resorted to internal trading just to squeeze out some extra hammers

I'm also getting way more Great Writers/Artists than I have districts to store their works in. I'm expanding just so I have more cities to produce units and to house works.

I think this game will require that you specialize your cities even more heavily than you did in Civ 5.

As Russia I'm just raking in insane amounts of cash with trade routes. Stacking every possible bonus on them gives me tons of gold per turn, so I can do nothing but build wonders and expensive buildings and buy all the units/cheap buildings I need outright.

This district system is difficult. Definitely correct to have one encampment, probably one campus unless you're going whole hog into science. Mercantile districts in every city? Maybe? I dunno. Lots of planning.
