If it's phonetically correct, they'll take it. If no, no dice. They would take "Emansupayshin" but "Emanciptation" is no good.

i still think it's bullshit you know he knew it by that answer. i think someone years ago lost when the correct response was mediterranean sea but missed a syllable but it's like c'mon you know he knew it even if he missed a syllable there.

Yeah. Doing it the way they've done it now makes it far less subjective than "Oh you know what he meant!"

If it was a regular question and he would have said "emanciptation", it would have been wrong. They just hold the written answers to the same standard.

Without rules, everything would be all higgledy-piggledy Once you start accepting answers because "you know what he meant" it's total anarchy

So I've never heard of the FJ answer. Is that like an obvious thing that you learn in the US? I can't get over the disparity in question difficulty between yesterday and today -- yesterday's was obvious as can be and today's was, at least for me, something I couldn't even guess at. Yet they all got it right and one guy hosed up Mandela yesterday.

yeah all true Americans know the Mayflower Compact so the thanksgiving episode final jeopardy correct response was "turkeys" I feel like it was obvious because it was thanksgiving but would have been hard on a regular day so did they tell the contestants beforehand that this ep would air on Thanksgiving?

It's also pretty easy even if you don't speak Spanish, you just have to think of one bird native to the Americas that looks kind of funny.

Otherwise that poo poo would be even more of a grind than it is on people right now. My tape date was March 11th, the episode didn't air until the end of June, though if I had been pushed back, I could've been on the July 4th episode. The email said as much, slated to air the week of the 22nd. Which episode you wind up getting on it totally random though. Missed the whole Final Jeopardy bit because my cousin flipped to the Cowboys Redskins game during the commercial and didn't switch back in time to see the clue and responses, but since Andrew showed up on Friday, I take it he still won, only to lose on Friday. Speaking of Friday, Liz, the woman in the middle podium, is the partner of 2014 ToC winner Ben Ingram (the one who beat both Arthur Chu and Julia Collins in the final), a fact that he made sure people knew via Facebook. Too bad she didn't do as well as he did. Also missed the last game of the Teen Tournament, but I've seen recaps, and it looks like it was a very good one. Did have to laugh during the first game of the final when the three of them left the video game girl category until last (probably because they had no idea what the category was going to ask based off of the title), then the first clue they pulled from it was a Triple Stumper and they left two more clues in that category unrevealed. Guess they don't have much time for the vidya, huh? The previous Teen Tournament winner in 2014, Jeff Xie (the guy who won off of the first tiebreaker question to decide a game that I've ever seen, now at Columbia University), gave Sharath congrats over Facebook, and then was jokingly complaining about why Sony bumped the prize money for first up to $100k this time around when he only got $75k. According to him, that difference could've been another semester's tuition at Columbia for him! As for the "Emancipation" thing, not to revisit it since I get tired of people in the Facebook peanut gallery bringing it up so drat often to nitpick at rules, but Maggie the head contestant coordinator very clearly tell us in the Green Room (and at the audition beforehand) that phonetic spelling will be accepted, but a misspelling that changes the pronunciation of a word or name will not. The example they always give us is Reykjavik. GhostStalker fucked around with this message at 00:18 on Nov 29, 2016 |
