I find my mafia games that are role based but also have day mechanics are mafia enough that people get that fix but different enough that people bored with mafia enjoy it. Like Katamari Mafia. Hint hint.

Sounds p fun to me There's quite a few rules, and quite a bit of communication is involved, so while it does tear people apart, it's also quite a commitment. Imagine Risk, but absolutely no dice or chance, and everybody's movement turns resolve simultaneously. It's like 7 player chess. A very strategic game.
