It has the classic mod problem of getting harder and harder with each new version. It used to be you started with an "XCOM parody" loadout and a decent pirate ship. Now they have some foolish thing where you start with a flying panel van full of barely armed prisoners. And this is before you get into the premise and tech blurbs...

Hey now, it could be worse and it being the base game getting huge difficulty spikes because somebody promoted the makers of the HARDCORE mod to developers like microsoft did with Age of Empire 2 HD where the new "Moderate" AI will handily beat the old very hard one every time because Moderate should be a match for an average player but this is a 16 year old game so the "average" ranked player is anything but.

LW2 looks really cool but it's designed for people who really just despise having any sort of advantage or edge in a fight and just want the whole thing to be a struggle beginning to end. Not really my cup of tea.

Beaglerush has started a long war 2 lp. Beaglerush's roster includes the soldier version of Beaglerush. Beaglerush.

Somehow, I doubt this is going to work.

Anyone with good commentary and decent editing doing an LP of LW2? ...Actually, anyone doing a 2-man commentary format for LW2? That seems to work better than just the player talking.

Operation Unfortunate Granola

That Avatar progress is getting up there and it's time to hit another facility before we go into full panic mode.

...too late.

Since this wasn't expected to be a big mission I brought out our Psi soldier for a little fun. As Guava said she's probably a little early to the party and could have spent a few more weeks in the tubes for a few more skills. More supplies to buy her a improved Psi Amp also would have done her a lot of good as her damage output was a little underwhelming. Still I wanted to do something at least a little different for an other wise fairly unremarkable mission. We'll put her back in the tubes and try her out again later with a few more skills and a better psi amp in the near future.

Marksman Colonel rank
Steady Hands vs Aim

This is a pretty obvious one, no matter which side of the sniper vs gunfighter argument you are on. Aim requires you to hunker down on your turn to receive a +20 aim bonus on the first shot of the following turn. It could... maybe... be useful... sometimes? No not really. And less likely when we look back at the LP and see how few times I have ever even hunkered down over the course of 25 missions. I think it's been once. Steady Hands however gives you a bonus for what you should already be doing, staying still. If a marksman did not move on the previous turn then they gain +10 aim and +10 crit chance. This is just an added bonus to snipers that find a nice perch and stay there. It's free aim bonuses. How could you not love that?

Winner: Steady Hands. Even a gunfighter can benefit from this more than Aim.

I've had a nice happy spot in my heart for Psi Operatives ever since I first used Void Rift.

I used it on a pod of 3 Sectoids, knocking them all down to 2-3 health. Then, the insanity check occurred, and MIND CONTROLLED ALL 3 OF THEM!

I've never had a mind control from Rift result since...

Apparently, saying Beaglerush 3 times worked. Go figure.

Anyway, let's hope this thread doesn't degenerate into Long War 2 talk, because that would likely be a drain on just about everyone's sanity.

I was going to ask how the end-of-days timer works when you stop it but you guys covered that already. I would say I don't believe that you've instantly got another two pips of progress on the Avatar Project yet again, but given the course of this LP yeah I absolutely believe that.

On the Blacksite Vial, I think that the resulting cutscene it to tell you that the material in the vial is either melted-down essence of human, or just the distilled pure genetic formula, of millions of people. The gene treatments are apparently a motivation for everyone to submit themselves to some kind of genetic testing, which ends in some people being cured of terrible ailments, and some people being made into biofuel for whatever super-weapon or death machine the aliens are building.

They just need to put the gene therapy centers in Vegas and Monte Carlo and they could make a fortune.

ASHERAH DEMANDS I FEAST, I VOTE FOR A FEAST OF FLESH
My Psi Chamber was one of the last things that I built when I played, so I never played around with the psi skills much. I had no idea that void rift did all of its damage immediately and had an extra chance for insanity on those hit by it. I never used it because I thought took two turns to do damage like the alien version.

One of the things the XCom games like to do with alien tech and powers is show that humans can be so much better than the aliens at that poo poo. Make better plasma cannons, use better psyonic powers, build better automatons... Short of a full-on jetpack and an actual Hulk soldier, anything the aliens can bring humanity will defeat, steal, break down, rebuild and improve upon.

Edit for readability: Didn't the Aetherials in the previous game aim to use humans, who had a great physical strength and mental capabilities, to make some perfect being or something?

Yeah the end of XCOM 1 has the aliens going on about how humans would make the ultimate warrior race because they possess sturdy bodies and powerful psionic potential, a combination they've never seen before.

It's like some sort of reverse It's A Wonderful Life. The Avatar Project gets an extra pip every time an angel loses its wings (to a repeater).

The only times I've ever taken aim are when my sniper already got deep cover from the awc. At least in that case, it made a bit of sense, I could double move the sniper, hunker automatically, and get 20 next turn when I needed it. Aside from that, steady hands is far better I think.

Veloxyll
May 3, 2011

Fuck you say?!

Or any time my Sniper doesn't move, I get 10 aim. And 10 crit. Like say after they shoot with their sniper rifle.

For the other thing, I have to give up any shooting and half a turn. Even for Faceoff snipers it's bad. because they'd rather run in and shoot everyone.

Yep. That's the only time it's ever even a question. Though I will say that combo can be quite powerful for a mobile sniper, particularly when you've got the grappling hook in addition. You can cover a TON of ground, stay pretty safe and then just blast away the next turn.

Stocks don't apply Shredder, sadly, and even advanced/superior stocks only do reduced damage (a minimum of 1) when the target has armor.

To be fair, if it were any other way it'd be a pretty terrible game. Humans face off against a galaxy-spanning alien empire that brings to bear the might of entire planets, is smarter and stronger, and wields technologies that we cannot even begin to understand (much less replicate). We lose.
