Remember that the PS1 had a boatload of shovel ware so I wasn't expecting much. First zombie nearly had me too scared to play. The way they did the sound, the camera direction, everything was crazy new for the time for consoles.

Family Video is where I plan on hitting up tomorrow at lunch as well. They are like the last bastion of rental chains here in the midwest (and pretty loving awesome!). RE has always been a great rental game for me as I tend to plow through them and then never touch them again.

Family Video actually has a pretty genius business strategy: Instead of doubling down on the rental service (and losing like its competitors), they are well diversified in other ventures. Primarily, they typically own the entire complex their stores are located in and rent the other spaces out to other businesses. Now about RE7: I'm actually stunned that the reviews are so good, but the good reviews have driven me from maybe buying to definitely buying.

I work in one of the attached stores and they pay rent to Family Video. It's actually a pretty neat plaza with them, pizza, and popcorn.

No game is perfect, and brushing over the drawbacks to rush to that 10/10 is a terrible waste of a review.

Thinking about Family Video makes me feel incredibly nostalgic. I beat Earthbound the first time by playing it after school every day for a month on their test station because I didn't have a snes. Between thinking about Family Video, waiting for a new Resident Evil to drop and playing a Dragon Quest game for the first time since I was a little kid I'm getting all sorts of grown man looking back on his youth feelings. I imagine it's what baby boomers felt every time they saw a baseball card in a bike spoke while doo-wop music played in a Steven Spielberg film.

So how much secret underground lab, bioengineered superspy crap is there in this one? That stuff turned me off resident evil since the second or third one. If this one is more chainsaw massacre and less metal gear solid with zombies (atmosphere-wise, of course), I'll probably get it.

Literally ever single Resident Evil is secret underground bioengineered super monster crap. It's going to be a part of this one too, reviews have already discussed how it's respectful to the franchise's mythology.

I have tried to not read too much into the plot in the reviews, but it sounds like this one is way more Chainsaw Massacre with the crazy science stuff happening at the tail end.

I've been playing some other survival horror to psyche myself up. On the plus side I went back to Evil Within and the action is much better then I remembered. On the minus side Alan Wake was exactly as much of a snooze fest as I remembered. The one thing I missed from both of those is a decent, creepy story, hopefully the Baker family will deliver on that front.

i generally associate super spies with other living humans, which no lab in re has ever had outside of cutscenes. labs in re games have the exact same gameplay, but with fluorescent lights and key cards instead of keys.

RE1 had Wesker, the double agent police officer/super scientist, RE2 had Ada and Hunk, RE3 had an entire squadron of Umbrella mercenaries, RE:CV had Wesker: Matrix Edition, RE4 had Leon and Ada, RE5 had BSSA and Wesker, RE6 had BSSA, Leon and Sherry/Jake, etc etc

Trying to figure out if this game is just Outlast with less green, but not actually spoil the poo poo out of major things like I just did watching a stream, is pretty difficult. The demo and random gameplay bits I've seen definitely make it out to be very Outlast-ey with the dark and spooky -> OH NO JUMP SCARE -> repeat stuff only now sometimes you can shoot the jump scare antagonist. RE7 also seems to have the OH NO HE'S NOT DEAD SURPRISE trope over and over again. I kind of want to be super wrong on all this.

The early reports are that it starts off like Outlast but gets more in keeping with Resident Evil the further you get into it.

RE4 started with a creepy intense village and then went more and more over the top ending on a commando island, something like a more subtle version of that would be quite cool here. In general I'm just excited about the idea that there's stuff in this game other than the house, since the unknown is interesting.

It doesn't. it's preferable to using a controller to aim though. the gun arm sticks out of your head and it's really weird. Wish they had implemented move support somehow. Aiming is easy though it's just jarring and stupid looking visually.
