Haha, I had forgotten about that. I don't remember much about 5 to be honest, I found it to be one of the weakest entries, unfortunately.

I was paying so much attention to the opening karaoke session, I almost missed the transformation into hair metal-magnificence. And once I did notice it, I couldn't concentrate any more.

Yakuza is the Little Series That Somehow Could. We may not get the side-games (Dead Souls aside, and that's probably because zombies), but, against all odds, we keep getting the main series games. It's as much a fighter as anyone in the games themselves.

On the moon... they don't make Neo Kobe Pizza.

Sony America's effectively turned Yakuza into their little pet project thanks to Gio Corsi and Sony Third Party Production, so we'll probably get all the main games for the foreseeable future. I mean, if the same system exists to give David Cage work then goddamnit it can do some good by giving us Yakuza games. The only major ones we've missed now aren't even main games, they're all spin-offs like KENZAN!, ISHIN!, and the PSP games no one wants to play.

Speaking of is there a decent guide anywhere for Kenzan aimed at people who know no Japanese? I bought it on a trip there ages ago, but my attempts to play it never met with any great success.

So, I'm interested in getting into this series, but I don't have a PS4. I do have a PS3 though, can anyone recommend one of the games on there to start with?

Any of them are good, but Yakuza 4 is probably the best beginner-friendly title on the PS3 since it doesn't assume any prior knowledge and Akiyama is a charismatic lead.

The Rush Style training is kind of annoying. It feels like the only reason there's any challenge whatsoever to it is the obnoxiously small circle, and it's not even due to that in itself: it's the fact that it's easy as hell to end up in a spot with 0 visibility because the camera is all about an NPC's back.

Are there any substories you can get locked out of? Like, if I eventually get to the point in the game where I play as the second protagonist, will I be locked out of any side quests I could have completed beforehand?

I think this version of Majima is honestly my favorite. Majima in the other games is like at 11 at all times while here he's more like at 8-9 at all times and sometimes goes to 11, which I think works better.

I think they use him well to similar effect in 4 and 5, since he and Saejima as sworn brothers provides a good space for serious pathos as much as wacky Majima, which is how he works best. The whole end of Chapter 2 and beginning of Chapter 3 in 4 is maybe my favorite overall sequence of Majima material for just that reason.

E: I'm worried about Kiwami specifically because the Majima Everywhere system seems a bit too much 'wacky Majima' and too little 'serious but also still crazy Majima'.

Yeah, that's true. I think 0 is just fresher in my mind (and also Majima's introduction in 0 is perhaps my favorite scene in the series.)

Majima's 0 intro is fantastic for emphasizing Majima's craziness as independent from his violence, which is an important feature that's lost in some other Majima moments.

I tell you, the final mission and cliffhanger of the first Majima section/chapter 4 is probably my favorite part of the series. That's good story. And then they gave me the realty system and Kiryu's story has so far come to a screeching halt for seven hours. I am up to $130M a run. I like the realty system.

First time Yakuza player here, the game is terrific, between the hard rear end main storyline filled with great characters/antagonists and the hilarious subquests, topped with the awesome 80s japan setting, it's a treat. I'm not sure I'll be spending a lot of time one some mini games and other stuff (like shogi) but Yakuza 0 is filled with awesome things to discover.
The game is up top with Witcher 3 and Red Dead Redemption for me in terms of side activities to randomly stumble upon roaming, and they're all great, and I'm only in chapter 4 !
Definitly worth the eurodollars spent on it, I only regret Europe didn't get the cool Business Edition with the card holder.

There's no reason to use appstims in this one really. There's a CP upgrade called bottomless stomach that lets you keep eating even if you're full. Much quicker then eating a couple things, leaving, popping a stim, and going back.

e: legendary drinker of ryukyu still serves a purpose though. no upgrade to keep drinking i don't think.

I really appreciated 4 giving me impetus for just being drunk all the time out of the gate with Akiyama's drunkeness boost skills, because I went through most of the bars before even getting to Chapter 2.

Oh dang, I haven't even seen that CP upgrade yet. I did manage to clear out a majority of the bars in Kamurocho though, and I'm currently grinding my face on Combination/Carom shots so I'll go check that out afterwards. Thanks!

Man, I'm just in disbelief that we went from never seeing Yakuza 3 in the west to this. I'm also thrilled to see all the new players hopping on board here. Game owns, series owns, Sony owns.

It's been such a ride being a Yakuza fan. I'm elated more and more each time than the last whenever we get the next major entries brought overseas, against all odds. Been with it since the beginning. It really feels like an accomplishment that we've supported the series well enough to get to this point. I hope more people continue to discover these games.
