Hey, for some reason I my game keeps crashing at the end of my first council mission. I've verified repeatedly and done a fresh install. I checked with a mod launcher and there aren't any conflicting mods aside from some voice packs with duplicate IDs. I do have a lot installed though (mainly cosmetic). Any possible reason for this?

E: More info: It's always when I evac. It doesn't many how many soldiers I evac with, and when the evac is complete, I get the victory music, but the results screen doesn't show up and the game freezes. I also gets momentary freezes when selecting customization options for my soldiers and randomly during combat.

at least you are going to survive the campaign.

e: Alkydere, you failed a hack once this game. It was on a turret. You've redeemed yourself by taking control of a sectopod on the final mission. Thanks.

My many CoX, always poised, always ready, always willing to thrust.

So for future reference, in the last room of the final mission, are the waves infinite or is it finite and they just trigger after each turn and I can slowly move up and clear them? I succeeded pretty handily, but I was still in a bit of a panic trying to one-round each boss.

Also gently caress Codexes. Seriously I think that is the enemy that annoys me the most because the radius on the weapon disable is huge.

speaking of Codexes, how bad are they in LW2? They are the main reason I'm afraid to get skulljacks and shadow chambers.

So, a pod of a gatekeeper of two Archons and a Gatekeeper is bad enough but then an Elite Shieldbearer, an Elite Lancer and an Andromedon get in on the action and you bet I'm evaccing, keep your 100 Intel and tick up the Avatar counter. :stare:

Also, can I not rely on the Shadow Chamber's numbers? I ran into those pods with a lot of actions spent because the Shadow Chamber said 11 and I thought there would only be two left.

e: Oooh, Hail of Bullets on my Sharpshooter, that is nice. Thanks, AWC.

I've fought Codexes three separate times and it's always as part of a reinforcement pod/ that one that autospawns when you skullfuck the Officer. As a result, all three have been insta-murdered by reaction fire. So, while I can't speak for any new tricks they may or may not have, LW2 certainly did not make them any tougher.

This is on Veteran, for reference.

Currently they're a huge pain in the rear end as standard enemies if they path into you since they can do the whole teleport and shoot schtick on yellow alert but that is being patched out next patch (the teleporting).

Yeah mostly. If you dont do Shen soon the Spark will be pretty useless since you have to raise them like normal troopers. The alien armors you get by skinning the rulers also panic members of their base species so optimal relevance for the viper and berserker ones is passing.

Also the story missions should be a breeze at the point you're at.

These are good for the children's brains.
Well, I spent forever draining strength away from a region so I could liberate it at 3 strength. Went in with 7 exo suit/mag-tier high ranked soldiers and I'm pretty sure I can't win.

These loving regular soldiers that appear in pods of 8+ are consistently hitting my guys through high cover. It sort of makes positioning feel pointless. There's literally no way to alert and then kill all 8 in a single turn with my 5 remaining soldiers, and leaving any alive is a death sentence.

edit: never mind, not just hits through full cover, crits through full cover while flashbanged. gently caress this game i'm out

High cover isn't enough. High cover alone cuts enemy hit chance from 75% down to like 30%, and with enough enemies they will land hits on you. You need to stack high cover with other control methods. Area suppression, flashbangs, and so on. That cuts hit chance down to <10%. So you can kill a few, suppress the rest, mop up some more next turn, suppress the last couple, and so on.

Importantly, suppression also prevents enemies doing bullshit like rocketing you.

I lost to you once, monster. I shall not lose again! Die now, that our future can live!
For any of those untimed HQ assault missions, bring a stealth Shinobi and as many Sharpshooters with Death from Above and stocks as you can. Sneak up to a high rooftop and cackle with glee as you pick off pods at your leisure. (Try to wait until the closest pod is well out of normal combat range, so that survivors can't get close enough to threaten you.) Same thing works for supply raids, troop column ambushes, and the like.

On network tower missions, the reinforcement timer doesn't start until you break concealment. That means one hilarious and effective strategy is to bring a stealth Shinobi and a pack of Trench Gun Assaults. Carefully sneak your Shinobi to the objective while your Assaults get close to the remaining packs. Once your Shinobi stuns everyone, you get three whole turns to Trench Gun exposed pods and then mop up anyone who lives with your shotguns.

Yeah, high cover itself is only a partial bulwark against damage. You need to have Area Suppression and flashbangs and smoke and poo poo if you're getting into an extensive gunfight with entrenchment on both sides.

Ravenfood

For that reason: is there any reason to not almost entirely spec both grenadiers and gunners entirely right-side of the tree? I can see a case being made for Hail of Bullets, but Lockdown + Mayhem just seems so good and Sting Grenades are fantastic. The other classes seem to have a bit more variety in their builds, but they both seem massively better suited for their right tree focus.

Apoplexy

Hail of Bullets is amazing, especially with Center Mass improving its damage potential, but another option that rules is Grazing Fire + Shredder. The combination makes it so you'll always knock out that armor. Grenadiers are great in both sides of their trees. I have 2 Rapid Deployment Supporter Grenadiers and 2 Sappers.

Solarflare
Apr 21, 2008
Left side gunners are really good at knocking out high priority targets with chain shot, cyclic fire and center mass. Right side gunners just suppress ridiculously huge areas though and for that are extremely useful.

Ravenfood
Nov 4, 2011
I guess I feel like for killing high priority targets I have snipers, assaults, and rangers, none of whom can cover the control niches that gunners and grenadiers can. Well, assaults can lock down single targets regularly at range too, bit that comes with quite a few risks.

ELECTRONIC OLD MEN RUNNING THE WORLD
Christ, that Forge mission in vanilla. Managed to lose another Colonel thanks to a couple of pure 'that's XCOM' turns. Would have evacced while he was bleeding out since I'd used all my medkits after tangling with Archons and Codexes but no can do on that mission. I'll miss restoration until I can get another specialist leveled up.

I never die to Archons but I can never kill them before they take a chunk out of someone thanks to their Battle Frenzy and large HP pools. Any tips on those?
