Enjoy! he seems pretty famous, eh?

City of Gold is on Hulu and it's pretty loving awesome https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__2uT1cZWkY Edit: I'm kind of ashamed I hadn't heard of Jonathan Gold before. He's the first food critic to win the Pulitzer Prize, and after listening to some of his writing it's easy to see why. He applies a kind of poetry to food writing in the way Ebert did to film. On top of that his whole shtick was searching out hole in the wall places and understanding different neighborhoods. It's an incredibly democratizing way of looking at food criticism. I'm not sure if this has been posted here yet: Raja, Rasoi Aur Anya Kahaniyaan is a TV series about food that's on Netflix. Each episode focuses on a different region of India and its signatures dishes as well as history and culture. It's like A Bite Of China, but Indian. The first season is on Netflix, by the way. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1HFrQocIhg e: there are subtitles on Netflix

To be fair I had no idea Create existed until I cut the cable and installed an antenna. Now I have 4X the PBS choices all at the same time not including duplicates.

Anybody watching ATK sans Kimball? It's good, just different. I'm sure the two ladies will work out their chemistry as the season progresses it's just awkward as neither really takes any lead so it like the television equivalent of two people saying "no, after you" over and over at each other.

My wife and I watch it, but we're not super fond of it. We both miss the history parts of some of the recipes (Or is that more of a Cook's Country thing? We watch both and they blend together...). Their chemistry is weird, too. It seems very scripted and heavy handed with their jokes/commentary. I'm hoping it gets better, as we both enjoy the show a great deal.

Wife and I binged season 3 of Chef's Table over the past couple nights, the show is completely insane and over-the-top and I love it for that. If they ever make a documentary of my life's work I hope they play Vivaldi over it. We were supposed to go to Gaggan (from season 2) last year when we were in Thailand but they gave away our reservation despite calling months in advance, that was a huge bummer.

What do you mean they gave it away? The first episode of the first season, when the music kicks it up a notch and builds into this big crescendo as they reveal all the dishes.... I cried. Food TV isn't meant to be that emotional but those film makers know their craft.

Maybe "gave away" isn't the right term but we called them a few months in advance and they told us to check back in a few weeks before we were supposed to go, and when we checked back in they no longer had our reservation logged and were booked solid. Fortunately my wife is from Thailand so we can try again next time we go visit her family

That seems super sloppy for a top 50 restaurant. Good restaurants now use electronic systems with email and credit cards and reminders/notifications. Is it a Thai culture thing perhaps

Is the thread to ask about GBBO cookbooks? I grabbed Ruby's Crumb, Chetna's The Cardamom Trail and Mary Berry's Baking Bible from Amazon today but holy gently caress it looks like finalists start cranking out books the second they leave the tent. Has anyone else tried any of them? Are Paul's books as douchey as he is? (Do we still care about spoiling S3?)

my dad is singularly obsessed rn with this japanese eating show named kodoku no gourmet http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Kodoku_no_Gurume it's about this guy who travels and eats poo poo in japan the episodes have one format and one format only: 1. he does some desultory business poo poo for like 2 minutes 2. fucks off 3. eats food, delicious food like, actually eats it, the actor guy if it's a second take, he eats some more even see swallowing guy's a pro so my dad calls it a mukbang, which is not inaccurate, tbh also, despite it being about food in real restaurants, literally every single person, the server, the other customers, the people he does business with, is a paid-up union actor, so no stupid food show bullshit. every word of the business pablum and the server's talking is scripted. but they could cheap the gently caress out on main characters, since it's.... the one guy. it's him eating, completely alone, in peace also loving weird-rear end internal monologue also god-tier facial expressions according to my dad, translated: "hmm, if they aired this in the US, it would be pretty popular" mom in the same chatroom: "they already have this poo poo in the us" dad: "hmm.... no they dont" "guy smokes too much for a pg rating tho" lol watching the pork foot episode and he burns the pork foot in the yakiniku style dealio much cinema verite now that I'm being forced to watch, now there's like a normal-cooking show portion which shows the degree to which normal go-travelling-around food shows suck, cuz they aren't composed of someone just... eating... alone... curufinor fucked around with this message at 11:29 on Jun 2, 2017 |

ok, "obsessed" is a little too weak a word "has apparently been watching every single night for the last... 3 years" there isn't even that many episodes of the lonely gourmet, he's just been repeating them over and over the last time dad got this bad was when he watched "as good as it gets" 200 times in a row
