This is a pretty good write-up on why Shiro Maekawa was an effective writer for the Sonic series, especially in comparison to Pontac and Graff, and why he gets perhaps a bit too much heat for 06.

At the Heart of the city is an Alien horror, so vile and so powerful that not even death can claim it.

FP2: The demo is pretty much the same as the original in terms of gameplay, so I'm sure it'll be worth a play, but eh, they really needed to switch up a couple of things, like seriously why is Carol's claw dive still there, I can't even work out what it's for. The main thing that stands out is how completely bored of life the characters seem in their standing and jogging poses - a lot of their other animations look great with some fierce facial expressions, then when they stop moving they look like they're running through their shopping list in their heads, with really stiff upright poses. Really hoping they change that.
Given the complete engine change I was worried they were gonna lose that snappy platformer feel, but it seems they ported everything over fine. Art's probably temporary as polish and extra details only really come at the end.
So far my only issue is the level design is really open and directionless, FP1 already had issues with long levels but usually they were straightforward. Also the camera zoom out feels kinda jarring when the game is already higher res, maybe it gets better with practice.

See, this is why we should have kept Hedgehog Day instead of Groundhog Day. Sonic wouldn't have let us down.

It's confirmed to be like 2/3 remixes, 1/3 new levels, so we've probably got at most two more new levels to look at.

They also said it's a "long game" with Sonic 3 like level design.

Hey all, hope your weekend is going well :)

I've been thinking about Sonic a lot today and I hope that Knuckles can get his cool cowboy hat back that he had in the OVA. Mania has that killer wild west level, you know? There's a chance. Think about it.

Pet me.
Late to the comment, but seriously Freedom Planet is best enjoyed in classic mode, and it skips all the bad cutscenes. I tried story mode and I couldn't take the bad from the beginning cut scene. I don't know the transition between going from the desert to the mall to an airship, to a lab, to the jungl- I don't care or need to know why, it's classic mode.

Doctor_Fruitbat

The problem with classic mode is that, as you noticed, it strips all context from the game, and as S3&K made clear it doesn't take too much effort to strip level transitions and cutscenes down to the absolute basics to create a coherent adventure with a few exciting story beats. It's all or nothing in Freedom Planet, and neither is optimal.

Yeah the only thing you need on top of the S3&K formula is like a little castlevania map that shows Sonic going down the mountain for Ice cap to launch zone, falling off the damaged death egg, etc. Then it's exactly what a platformer needs. But there's no way FP was going to do something subdued like that.

What are people's theories for Sonic Mania and the remixes story hook? Me, I'm thinking it's all in a television set or something retro like that.

there goes all my hype.

the fact freedom planet had all that plot and poo poo to begin with even with an off switch is a pretty bad sign. it means the people making the game don't realize that tons of cutscene and dialogue and voice acting is lovely in a game and especially a platformer.

I was a bit bummed too, but then I looked over and made a list of levels I'd like to see remixed and keeping it at seven is hard.

Also "Sonic 3 sized" versions of 1 and 2 levels are going to be very big with a ton of new stuff. More than half the game will be new.

Yeah, not to be negative, but that's a bit a disappointing ratio to me too. We've been in a nostalgia period for awhile now, what with Generations, the episode 4s, the Lego dimensions stuff and to a lesser extent Lost World. I get nostalgia is a good initial hook, but if that ratio was reversed it be a bit more encouraging that the series is capable of doing new things and succeeding. I get that the two new zones shown so far are full of retro references, but the designs are at least fresh. I guess I'm just saying, and I can't believe this could be a possibility, I don't want Sky Sanctuary to become a stale stage visual to me like every ''''''New'''''' Super Mario Bros stage set back on the DS has become at this point.

Confident the game will be a blast despite that nitpick though.

We don't need to have that dialogue because it's obvious, trivial, and has already been had a thousand times.

Mark down March 16; it's the date we get more Sonic Mania and Sonic 2017 info.

Amppelix
Aug 6, 2010

What more Sonic Mania info could we possible need besides a release date? We know exactly how it plays, we have footage of three full levels, and I really doubt there's a story to speak of. Is SEGA going to post a full playthrough of the game on their youtube channel in an unprecedented marketing move?

Now project 2017 on the other hand, that could use a meaty press release or two.

Doctor_Fruitbat

They haven't actually shown us that much, only three zones if I remember rightly. A little extra info on the game, maybe throw in footage of one more zone (probably a throwback) and a release date, then onto the main game.

Do you actually want to see more zones? I already have full confidence that the level designs will be decent at worst, and I don't want to see half of the game's levels before I play it. Especially for a game like Sonic where the levels are short five-minute affairs.

I want confirmation it isn't remixes of Sky Sanctuary, Casino Night, Carnival Night and Collision Chaos.

Actually I guess I'd like them to confirm there are CD and S3&K levels, then I'm ignoring the news.
