They used to have these weird elf statue things, and when they built a mall over the racetrack, OCFS got them and had them on top of the covered grandstands for the longest time. They have a merry-go-round inside the mall (that I rode numerous times as we used to do my school shopping there) that was originally in place at the old fairgrounds.

This Gordon/Evernham '97 Daytona 500 documentary is awesome. Watching the clips of BP, Ned and Jenks calling qualifications on ESPN2 just seemed like a completely different sport...and it legit made me sad. Same with seeing Buddy Baker, Ned Jarrett and Ken Squier doing the races on CBS. Also the "Are you going to go my way?" teaser that aired during it, again...man...it's amazing how HUGE of a star Jeff was in the states during 90's and 00's.

A few years back they had a meeting/council of drivers, track owners, promoters and Nascar officials that turned into a gigantic slap fight/mexican standoff because one of the points the drivers kept bringing up was fan cost of attendance. Including hotels price gouging and ticket prices being loving retarded. It was the same slap fight that led Bruton Smith to say the drivers don't interact with the fans enough and Junior to respond with a diplomatic way of saying go gently caress yourself.

They are only looking at hotel prices in Daytona Beach city proper (61sq mi, population 61,000), and comparing it to places like Tampa (170sq mi, population 370k, shitloads more hotel rooms). Most people I know who have gone to the 500 stay in NE Orlando or somewhere else in the area, not Daytona proper. Its like assuming everyone who ever takes a trip to Disneyland stays only at the Disney hotels on site. Basically that trivago article is as lovely as their awful awful commercials.
