Thin Privilege posted:Did you say that maybe.. regulation is good? No way What's funny is that in a odd perversion of the idea that the free market will provide Bitcoin is basically being shadow regulated by a bunch of money launderers and drug sellers who want to protect their assets. They are fixing exchanges and controlling the market so that they can use it as a reliable currency to facilitate crime (especially now that Steam is becoming more locked down, although for small scale laundering Steam can't be beat) it's just the only people who are reaping the benefit from it are criminals. So little Danny nerd in his moms basement drying strawberries and tanking the power bill gets none of the protections of a regulated system unless he wants to interact with the people who are granted that ability (IE if he wants to buy drugs) but the Russians and other people who are using it to facilitate drug smuggling and large scale money laundering reap all the benefits.

So a guy at work loves bitcoins and I occasionally chat with him and it comes up. I always kinda make a little fun of him to his face and he accepts theyre not really tenable currency in the way the major idiots talk about; I'm not gonna call him dumb or anything, i spend money on useless poo poo too sometimes. Anyway he was telling me that Amazon now accepts bitcoins and I thought that was pretty odd so I looked it up and of course it's bullshit. Amazon set up a marketplace where you request a gift card of a certain amount and bitcoiners pay amazon real money plus a transaction fee for a gift card that they then sell to you for bitcoins. So once again, and as always, the best way to profit off bitcoins is to set up a way to take fees from bitcoin users without ever actually touching the bitcoins themselves Are there any major businesses that accept bitcoin? I googled and found a list and so far every single one is the same deal, where they just let idiots trade you gifts cards for your bitcoins

Is it a currency or an equity or a commodity? Is it a store of value? Is it a “settlement mechanism”? Is it not money at all, but merely an example of a decentralized application on the Blockchain? The short answer is: none of the above.
