i'm watching a tourney at the moment, and it seems like high level play is really interesting - like way beyond anything i've ever done in a puzzle game. anyone played at a higher level? i'd be interested to hear about strategy.

Once or twice a year me and my friends break out a couple of bottles of whiskey and play Puzzle Fighter all night. Does that count? It should.

I used to participate in online Tetris tournaments. Might do it again once Puyo Tetris is released.

Does Minesweeper count as a puzzle game? One of my friends is extremely good and is in the top ten US leaderboard and top 100 worldwide leaderboard. Nobody gets paid to play Minesweeper though.

sector_corrector posted:i'd be curious to see competitive minesweeper. how do you score matches, or whatever? There are Minesweeper clients that record games. Poeple play games whenever and their best times from Beginner, Intermediate, and Expert difficulties are added up. This total time number is what is used to rank them on a leaderboard. This is the worldwide leaderboard: http://www.minesweeper.info/worldranking.html. If you click on someone's time you can download a file that lets you view the game in a client. This is my aforementioned friend getting an amazing time on Expert difficulty: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhp7ypJW730

He's a great fps player as well since his mouse control is so fine. I'll ask him to record a Beginner level game for you. If you checked the Minesweeper leaderboard site, people clear Beginner games in mere seconds; the top Minesweeper player has a time of 0.49s. My friend's time is 1.28s.

There are a small number of Beginner boards where the mines are positioned in just the right way that you click once and win. People just refresh the game thousands of times until they hit one of those. That Expert run was super impressive.
