Per CF.org, looks like Hitchcock's The Lodger is coming, as is The Magnificent Seven.

I wasn't a huge fan of The Lodger, though unlike other silent Hitchcocks I bet it would benefit a ton from not being on a public domain DVD. I didn't even like Magnificent Seven much before seeing Seven Samurai, and with the Kurosawa to compare it to TMS suffers even more.

Agreed, The Magnificent Seven is pretty good, but that's about it. The cast is the only reason it works, although I'm not really even a big Yul Brynner fan.

MGM had the rights for a while and released restored DVDs of The Lodger, Sabotage, and Young & Innocent. The Lodger wasn't the newer restoration, but still looked excellent. Even had two scores and a commentary.

Has anyone watched Bitter Rice? I picked it up at HMV after 40% off - $30 turned into $18 CAD. It was described as "Italian socialist noir" which intrigued me, and after watching it last night, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Silvana Mangano, Vittorio Gassman, and Doris Dowling were all great, and a rice-field battle was certainly a first that I've ever seen.

The Magnificent Seven is oddly timed just because of how recently the re-remake came out. When they did Godzilla they got it out in time for the release of Godzilla '14.

Origami Dali posted:Is Criterion working on a Joan of Arc blu yet? They were obviously waiting for Gaumont's restoration to be completed and it was put up on Filmstruck not long ago. It's one of their oldest in-print, but not upgraded titles. I think only Summertime and Andrei Rublev have been out longer.

The Magnificent Seven is a fine film on its own, and I'm glad it's coming to Criterion. The more westerns, the merrier.

There are so many westerns, you figure some enterprising company would have made a western streaming service by now. But maybe a bad idea since the target audience would be really old or dead by now...

Uncle Boogeyman posted:I really want an Andrei Rublev blu ray, do we think that's gonna happen? Eventually, but apparently the problem is that Mosfilm has only restored the shorter (but still Tarkovsky-approved) version, not the longer cut. Criterion would have to restore the long version themselves. They do have all the Mosfilm-owned Tarkovsky films. Obviously, Ivan's Childhood and Solaris are already out, Stalker is going to be soon, and it's just a matter of time for The Mirror and Andrei Rublev.

ooo The Mirror would be nice if only because the subtitle track on the Kino version is pretty bad.

I always assumed in order...? Also I really really liked Blind Chance. A lot more than the three colors trilogy.

I did it the other way around but I feel like either way should be fine. Just don't skip the features altogether, as I think they're both a significant improvement over the episodes they're adapted from.

There's a ton of classic Westerns I'd love to see on Criterion but I also think it would be great if they did one for The Assassination of Jesse James.
