It's the home brewing rig I am building. Three burners set up for natural gas instead of propane, each capable of well over 100,000 BTU. From right to left will rest my hot liquor tank (15 gallons), my mashtun (15 gallons), and my boiler (22 gallons). I'll be able to make 15 gallons of beer at a time, though I will have to rearrange a bit and step down to 10 gallon batches of very strong styles. My fuel costs will decrease about 80 to 90% from my current rig, and later on I will add electronically controlled gas valves.

I'm so glad I have a friend who loves home brewing, because I get all the benefits and none of the drawbacks. He also has a small still, I've got a bottle of his 87% ABV absinthe* in my liquor cabinet. Good stuff, goes down smooth * High quality moonshine with herbs, really. So I don't know if I mentioned my purchase of a Johnnie Walker duty-free four pack from a few months ago (my curiosity got the better of me), but I was at a whisky bar last weekend, and I found they have a bottle of Green Label there. After trying it, I have to confirm the consensus that it's much better than the Gold and Platinum (haven't tried the Blue yet), and cheaper. It still won't be in my standard rotation, but it's nice to know.

I've never been a fan of Bulleit but haven't had any in years. Grabbed a bottle tonight and now I remember why I don't buy it. There are prominent sour notes and a smell like dirty dishwater. Not pleasant.

Dramalama alert.. /r/bourbon mod asks one of the Van Winkle family to do an AMA, gets turned down in a supercilious manner from RVW, but then rather than just ignore it or just make a passing note in one of their existing threads, decides to create a dedicated thread publically chastising RVW including the email response. Then after realising he isn't getting public support for his unwise actions, locks the thread and turns thread sorting to new posts, to obscure upvoted comments calling him out, then unlocks thread again. https://www.reddit.com/r/bourbon/comments/5wxpcj/bullshit_response_to_an_ama_request_from_van/?sort=top

Schneider Heim posted:My friend came back from Japan and gifted me a small bottle of Yamazaki 12 y/o. How lucky am I? It's good but not great. Supplies seem to have dried up over the last couple of years making it hard to get hold of so there's the whole rarity thing, but there's probably better (Scotch) options at the price nowadays.

Craigslist here is universally awful with very few exceptions. There are diamonds though if you look carefully (and block your nose the entire time you're on the site). Couple months back I picked up a secondhand snowboard for very cheap which will do me over the next few years. And last night I scored (among other bottles) an unopened bottle of Hibiki 12 from a British fellow who was clearing out his closet in advance of his wife giving birth to their first! who wants to touch me

I'm not a huge bourbon fan but I try to always have a bottle of Four Roses Single Barrel around the house (I think that's the name. It's the one with the leather tag). It is so tasty, and it makes my mouth feel like it is covered in warm, golden velvet.

Found a bottle of it a few months ago at the LCBO finally, and yeah, it's really nice. Still, I'm preferring my CC 100% Rye (currently) as it's much richer and spicier.

kidsafe posted:It's made by Alberta Distillers for Whistle Pig and it's good. Jefferson's is similar as is Alberta Premium... Cool. Is there Old World as good as the Straight Rye? Also, I know that these spirits can run to absurd amounts of money, but what price range should I be looking for "good" whiskey? What's the sweet spot in terms of pricing? $60? $130? I'm strictly a beer guy, but I can usually tell that I shouldn't be paying more than $35 for an "outstanding" sour. I just have no references for whiskey.

obi_ant posted:Cool. Is there Old World as good as the Straight Rye? Price really isn't indicative of quality imo. There are so many crap, craft distilleries out there these days pushing bourbon prices at $60-70 that aren't as good as many $15 BiBs. Then there's the MSRP vs. people marking up stuff because it's somewhat rare. Nearly all of the bourbon I like is ~$50, it's just hard to find these days.

I agree. 99% of the time I'm drinking Old Grandad 100 because it's good and only $22. My favorite bourbon is Bakers, but the price has gone way up and I'm kinda stubborn about giving in. But you can get a good sippable bourbon for $15.

Going out to a restaurant with a pretty extensive whiskey menu tonight for my birthday. Prices are on the high side, but is there anything I should consider treating myself to a pour of? I lean towards ryes and sweeter/spicier bourbons, but mostly just looking for an excuse to try something I wouldn't otherwise. Here's a page from their menu for reference:
