Humans were working on it secretly to catch up the thousand year head start the Asari and Salarians have on them.

When the Alliance wouldn't keep supporting the project Rydad took it with him to Andromeda.

That's one good part of writing; sounds exactly like something the humans of Mass Effect would do. Sneaky fuckers.

My framerate goes to poo poo on Eos for no apparent reason and also randomly crashes to desktop and I have no particular desire to fiddle with settings to get it to work, so I'm glad EA did the whole Origin Access so I could personally confirm that ME:A is indeed a mediocre-to-bad game.

I think my favorite part, other than the whole SAM nonsense, is the Tempest. When I first saw it, I initially grumbled at the visual copy-paste similarity to the Normandy but rationalized that both ships were scout ships so it makes sense they'd look alike.

Then I read the Codex and found that the Tempest has a stealth system. Despite that being a huge hush-hush project at the time the Initiative would have launched. Yeah, the Codex tries to handwave it away (and again heavily implies Cerberus funded the Initiative) but it means the Tempest is literally just the Normandy. I swear to God, there was not a single original thought brought up in the writers' room.

Like all good stories, the second act begins with a call to action and the building of a robot.

DrNutt posted:

I got to play for a few hours today and went through the first vault, and I have to say, as negative as I've been on the game, so far I'm actually a little impressed by the scope and ambition thus far. I really liked how you come out of the vault and see the clear sky and all that, but what really impressed me was calling down the settlement and building the outpost. Pretty much all the buildings can be explored and you can access a bunch of terminals and talk to a bunch of non-important NPCs. It's not super important in the grand scheme of things but it does make the world feel larger and more alive, and being able to talk to boring nobodies just for the sake of getting to know them is one thing I've always liked about RPGs.

It's really too bad that almost everything related to the main plot is dreadful.

Yup yup yup. It's also kind of cool to see the Nexus advancing through a few stages so far, with areas opening up and becoming functional, more NPCs, etc. I'm only maybe 3-4 main missions past the trial now (Met the cat men, helped their scientists), but hopefully that continues. It's one of the few things that MEA is doing better than DAI -- showing some significant changes in the environment and hubs to reflect your progress. DAI did a little of that with Skyhold but it wasn't nearly as noticeable as it is here.

I'm coming around a tiny bit on the squad and crew mates, but game is still mostly mediocre as gently caress. There are a few bits and elements here and there that are surprisingly good, and some that are really bad, but the vast majority of it is just... souless. Gonna keep playing because my broken brain is in the mood for an OW RPG right now and the combat is at least fun. But it's pretty obviously a 7 out of 10 at best, for me. It really isn't "No Man's Sky" level of bad but... it ain't good, either. I certainly wouldn't recommend it to anyone new to ME -- if you're going to play a new open world action, go play Horizon because that game owns.

The Tempest is I think the worst designed spaceship I've ever seen in a space opera. The captain's stateroom is bigger than the living quarters for the entire rest of the crew, there's a meeting room as big as the stateroom and there's giant windows everywhere.

The Tempest being such a rip off of the Normandy is kind of appropriate considering how much this game feels like an imitation of the first three mass effect games. It almost feels like it should have been published by Focus Home Interactive or Deep Silver. It's a game made by people who played the Mass Effect trilogy and had some idea of why people enjoyed them but clearly just did not have the competence or resources to do it themselves.

It's a starship in a videogame.
Please don't go all CIG on this.

Of course it's a rip-off of the Normandy. The characters are all riffs on or mashups of characters they've done before and you don't even have to think very hard about it. The story has prominent plot points from literally every Mass Effect game (apart from 3, and if you wanna squint hard enough you can make a compelling argument that it also steals from ME3) in it.
I don't know if Bioware is capable of being truly imaginative any more but I don't really care. Video game Sci-fi and AAA video game fantasy stopped paying attention to imaginative worlds that aren't absolute garbage after the Lord of the Rings movies.

The gun mechanics are fun, even if they probably should have dropped the cover shooting aspect since it wasn't really needed (Bioware's VATS?) - especially not when you think about how before you get too far into the game every enemy group has either a) a tank that will charge you out of cover or b) an enemy that will ignore cover and push you out of it.
I really started to enjoy the combat the instant I stopped using cover outside of "okay, the game just spawned 15 enemies in this one room and this is bullshit".

It's not the greatest game ever and it's probably not going to be "actual reviewer" GOTY material.
I can come up with a laundry list of complaints about this game if I wanted to. It's not even that hard. Hell, the faces for the Asari and Humans are so bad I'm pretty sure Bioware ripped them out of ME1.
It's not worth $60, or whatever Origin is charging for it. But it's not nearly as bad as the people questioning a 78 on metacritic.
It's a good dumb fun pulp space opera. The design is cool, and if you actually bother to set your graphics manually and have a PC that can run decent graphics, the game is actually really pretty (aside from the Human and Asari faces, 'cos that poo poo is terrible).
