I realise that the general genre of what I'm asking for is basically "skate punk/pop punk" but I'm specifically looking for stuff that sounds like Teenage Bottlerocket and in particular the album "They Came from the Shadows". In a nutshell it is Ramones played by guys into metal so they added a bunch of riffs and leads that you don't tend to get in punk.

strung out, lagwagon, face to face, propagandhi, nofx, pulley, ten foot pole, a wilhelm scream etc all do riff heavy pop punk but the other obvious suggestions are screeching weasel, riverdales, methadones, the queers, the lillingtons, mean jeans, discount, exploding hearts, dopamines, dear landlord, dillinger four, lawrence arms, marked men, mixtapes, direct hit, masked intruder etc

And I really don't know the breadth of your musical tastes and what you've already heard. Some generally recognized classics:

DJ Shadow - Endtroducing

Massive Attack - Mezzanine

Portishead - Dummy

Public Enemy - Fear of a Black Planet, It Takes a Nation of Millions

Beck - Sea Change

Paul Oakenfold - Goa Mix

Sasha & Digweed - Renaissance

Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral

Faith No More - Angel Dust

Miles Davis - Kind of Blue

Pink Floyd - basically everything from Saucerful to The Wall

If your qualification is simply albums that are fantastic beginning-to-end, I could go on for ages

Homotopy is very early from when it was a band with several people, so it's not particularly indicative, but also his style has varied tremendously over the years.

e:actually that's Chance Meeting I'm thinking of, Homotopy is Stapleton alone. It's still not particularly indicative of anything though, since he's done lots of different things. Like Soliloquy for Lilith is a drone album for instance, he did some field recording stuff more recently, and so on.

I'm looking for bands that could be classified as post-punk revival, but divided according to whether they adhere more to garage rock or new wave. It's a little jarring to be listening to something that could be classified as dance-punk or synth-punk and then hear something that is closer to noise rock.

In terms of newish garage rock bands, I'm thinking like: Wavves, Black Lips, FIDLAR, Jet, the Datsuns, Thee Oh Sees, Japandroids, the Subways, Wolfmother, etc.

In terms of new wave revival, I'm thinking like: Franz Ferdinand, Interpol, Yeah Yeah Yeah's "It's Blitz!" album, The Rapture, The Maccabees, The Killers, The Editors, etc.

Any good suggestions for either of these categories would be appreciated.

I wouldn't really call a lot of those post-punk at all, but if you like them you'd probably like Diarrhea Planet, the first Titus Andronicus album, Meat Wave, the first few albums from The Men, and maybe even hosed Up.

It really got under my skin that music media classified bands like Interpol and the White Stripes in the same scene when they were most definitely not. I guess the Strokes were kinda in both areas. I'd even separate a lot of dance-punk groups from the post-punk revival, if we were really splitting hairs. For instance, I wouldn't lump Editors in with The Rapture and Moving Units.

Can't really help you on the garage revival end of things much but check out:

Parquet Courts - "Ducking & Dodging" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCrEMGj6Inw
Cloud Nothings - "I'm not part of me" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74TP8QhupLU

but for the post-punk stuff you touched on a lot of the big names, here's some mostly deeper cuts:

Bloc Party - "Banquet" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdkmhquF60o
The Prids - "Shadow and Shadow" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hs6-6nLGddY
Hotels - "Atlantic" https://hotels.bandcamp.com/track/atlantic
The Helio Sequence - "Keep Your Eyes Ahead" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8LIwXI0EI0
Wild Nothing - "Shadow" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4xTXB30hCQ

I also made this dance-punk playlist on spotify. If that's something you don't use I can list some trax out. A lot of those bands did blur into noise rock, as you sort of mentioned:

https://open.spotify.com/user/1231267262/playlist/5WWaHERjrSehGe1iBhY6YF

EDIT: for some much more recent post-punk acts check out Viet Cong/Preoccupations and Ought. I guess I should also recommend Savages, but I don't really like them:

Viet Cong - "Unconscious Melody" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBC1h2D9rgw
Ought - "The Weather Song" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fu77nn6UKao

There may be some Skinny Puppy / Cevin Key / Download tracks that could work for this. A bunch of Doubting Thomas would work except it might all be full of sampled movie dialogue which sounds brutally dated now.

Einsturzende Neubauten has a lot of stuff in this mood but there's a lot of screeching Germans I think you'd want to dodge throughout their catalogue. Maybe some stuff off the first couple Strategies Against Architecture albums could work.

Elite Gymnastics does some good moody stuff in a much more modern context.

Lake Radio has some of the few things from the witchhouse scene that hold up today and that might work.

I think there was an instrumental release of The Fragile if you want to go straight to NIN.

Scorn does the creepy mood really well. Vocal sample landmines abound, but Forever Turning off Gyral seems to work and there should be others.

SPK sorta did some of that mixed in with industrial disco. The Doctrine of Eternal Ice might work for your purpose.
