Thanks that actually worked really well(maybe I just wasn't using them in the past right, cause before many of the limits weren't doing all that much in the way of damage)

Okay how the hell are you supposed to beat Roxas when you fight him at The World That Never Was, cause it seems truly impossible in this situation, if for no other reason than him dealing too much damage in comparison to the limited healing resources you have when fighting solo

Honestly this might be the thing that gets me to give up, cause this just feels completely unfair

He's really the first boss that requires you to learn his patterns properly. Find something you can consistently block like say his long range dash after a combo and punish. Your block actually has really lenient active frames when you figure it out.

Honestly I've found Limit Form pretty awful, especially since the things it's good at require MP and thus it becomes useless very fast(which is also an issue for Wisdom form), also for some reason I can't seem to get the timing right for any of the unique Limits that it has

Well I'm probably screwed then because I suck at pattern recognition, at least for the kind of boss that Roxas is

They really should have had him be an optional boss

Yeah, Roxas is basically the most aggressive mandatory boss and designed in the same vein as the other new fights. Basically just memorize his openings after attacks and easily guardable moves, and pat yourself on the back when you win since the final boss is a joke in comparison.

Serious question drrockso20: what difficulty have you been playing on for KH1/2 FM?

To be frank, everything you've posted so far seems to indicate that you are bad at the game. Like "missing fundamental mechanics" bad.

And that's okay! Nothing wrong with that. But if the game is giving you trouble cause you don't understand it, then there are other options other than giving up like you've been talking about.

Have you been playing on Proud/Critical? Bump it down to Standard. Playing on Standard? Try Beginner mode. Even speedrunners have died to some fights on beginner so don't feel bad.

If you're seriously contemplating quitting, I'd really suggest trying another run on the lower difficulties. Just skip the cutscenes (which are a LARGE bulk of the games) and be more experimental with the mechanics. FYI you can save drive form if you return to the world map while in drive (or if you go into the areas where your party members turn into NPCs), and your drive will refill when visiting new worlds.

I only say this cause you'll probably enjoy the game a lot more if you try to understand how it works. I know I sure did back when I sucked at it and originally didn't like the game.

Standard for both games, and I've only been having problems with a couple specific fights in each game(and with the pirates the problem wasn't to do with them being weak to magic, it's them becoming invincible when they aren't in moonlight so most fights involving them take twice as long as they should, they aren't hard just tedious)

Honestly I'll admit with 2 a lot of my issues probably stem from me trying to get it done as fast as possible(while watching all cutscenes so I can be refreshed on the plot) so I can move on to the stuff I hadn't played before, also because KH2 does a pretty bad job at explaining a lot of it's systems

Restarting isn't really an option though, I don't think I'd be willing to go through the Roxas prologue portion of the game again any time soon(or the first couple of worlds in KH1)

You're supposed to use magic on them but yeah even then it's a bullshit mechanic. It's a neat novelty but it wears off quickly when they loving love to hang out right near the edge of the shadows so your combo shoves them over and oops! no more damage!

You just....wait for the pirates to come into the light. Then you can freeze them and combo. This is also where Chicken Little helps (cause yes, summons are good).

Am I just crazy? This isn't complicated, right? I used to think pirates were dumb, but once I saw you could just do that it wasn't a problem. They aren't the best enemies in the game or anything but they were fun to play around with imo.

Do you have a bunch of combo plus abilities equipped? Remove them. Are you using the newest keyblade? Switch to Decisive Pumpkin, the one from Halloween Town.

Don't worry about timing reflect, mash it any time you are in danger. It makes you completely invincible and it can combo into itself.

Finishing a combo on Roxas will let you steal his swords, they will then help you kick his rear end.

Abuse items, you're almost done with the game.

Sorry I meant to say I hope that the police use maximum force and kill or maim a bunch of innocent people, thus paving a way for a proletarian uprising and socialist utopia

also here's a stupid take
---------------------------->
Honestly the only part of the Roxas fight I'd say is badly designed (which is to say unfair) is his quick counter ability where he instantly breaks out and flies around comboing you. Fortunately you're playing casually and so might have Second Chance/Once More

Unless you picked the Sword in which case you've got a harder fight on your hands. Reflect is really good but Roxas has high Light resistance and Reflect does Light damage. You can try looping him by not hitting him with any finishers (in which case he will always retaliate with his slowest keyblade combo which can be guarded) but that's a pretty advanced technique. If you're really really having problems then level up Limit Form a bit and use the auto-limit ability whenever your health gets low and hit him with some Limit combos.

You don't sound like you've used limit form much so some stuff that is really useful to know about it is that it has both MP rage (which refills your MP when you take damage) and HP Drain which restores your health while you do Limit combos. As far as I know the most common casual strategy to throw at Roxas is Limit Form.

I almost quit my most recent KH2 replay at the Roxas fight, too -- I beat him on critical back in the day, but I'm just not as good at these games as I used to be -- and I'm glad I took a break from the game for a day or so and then sucked it up and learned the pattern-breaking techniques...because I ran into similar problems during my BbS playthrough with bosses that I felt were even more infuriating, and if I had just given up at Roxas and skipped to BbS then I would've just given up again. Maybe it's just me and my drop in skill level with these games now that I'm older, I dunno, but taking a break and reading walkthroughs helped a LOT, especially since I often learned that I was either underleveled and needed a certain ability or something that made things way easier.

I feel like if you give up this easily you're going to quit BbS and possibly DDD too, and maybe even 0.2 when you get to it (whose final boss was a big pile of garbage until it got patched, and then it was a slightly smaller pile of garbage).

to the end of my days I will never understand this opinion or why it has been inflicted upon the earth.

I managed BBS on Proud so someone playing on normal or easy would have no problem with the couple bosses that are kinda BS, and the story of BBS is great, in that it's mostly about Aqua cleaning up everyone else's mess because she's the sole competent person on the side of light.

Last Celebration

From a technical high-play standpoint it's kinda straight-up worse than KH1/2, but from my long-ago memories it's a god-tier ARPG beat-em-up because the command deck and melding commands are some Good poo poo.

my main problem with bss story is that aqua only really has basic competence as her personality trait, so she just ends up being real boring and a huge drag in any cutscene cuz her voice actress does not give a poo poo.

also having to grind for commands three times is kind of annoying.

Ventana

BBS imo has even worse bullshit than KH1/2. If you can't deal with Ansem, idk how you'd not pull your hair out with Terra's or Ven's final bosses.

DDD isn't bad as long as you just use multiple ballonra's. It's not fun, but neither are the bosses in general in that game.

morallyobjected posted:

I dunno why exactly that poster doesn't like it, but I presume some of the reasons would be similar to this video. To kinda sum up things:

-While the story started to get off the rails in KH2, BBS is where it escalated the crazy by a bunch.
-Gameplay deviated in a weird way. Commands are varied, but have no real downside or incentive for a lot of them. This ends up with you having little reason not to stack a deck with strong/invincible commands (like the surges) to cheese everything thoughtlessly with the same deck.
-Bosses are designed to either not have much stun to work with, or to break out of combos completely at random (Vanitas). So they aren't quite as fun as a lot of the ideas from 1/2. It loops back into that second point.

I don't really agree with the points myself, but I do at least see where they are coming from. It especially is obvious when you compare Lingering Will (or Mirror Aqua) versus Mysterious Figure, and you can see these points come up.
