The ref was backing up when the contact occured. By car insurance rules, he's therefore 100% at fault.

Jesus, I knew Wideman ended his career, but I just assumed it was post-concussion symptoms.

it probably was (which still gives his cause for a lawsuit) but you're taking a lawyer who'se looking for the top possible payout at face value that each of those claims are legitimate, unexaggerated and are lasting injuries. Please don't become a judge lol.

Every time I watch it I see someone who is visibly dazed get caught off-guard by a body last second and acts instinctively with a check, and stumble afterwards barely realizing what he just did, and likely not realizing who he did it to.

But I can't blame the ref for suing. He's still liable. I just don't see the intent.

He wasn't let off the hook, he was suspended for 20 games and fined 500 grand. This is the ref tryin to get paaaaaaaaaaaaaid. The lawsuit failing isn't going to tell players it's okay to hit the refs, it succeeding based on anything other than wideman's intent is going to tell players that they can be sued for any interaction with the refs. Mouthing off Tim Peel could cause emotional distress deserving of financial reparations.

I'm not defending what he did, but both him and the ref decided to stand in a dangerous place doing a dangerous thing. That's why they're both wearing helmets. He should be able to expect that he's not going to be checked by a bonehead, but should also understand that he has taken a job where it's possible it'll happen.

I'll echo that. If Columbus had gotten to face any of the other East teams except maybe the Caps I think they'd have won in the first round. The format is loving dumb. Columbus should have been bashing in the brains of Ottawa or whatever.

Columbus wasn't going to beat anyone's brains in if Bob put up the save % he put up. You can't win with an .891 goalie, and I don't think his play was just because of who he faced. He let in some real sketchy goals.

e: 5 games and he broke a .900 save percentage (barely) in only one of them. I get that it's Pittsburgh but no team is going to win with goaltending like that.

Yeah Bob was terrible. The Pens offense is something else though. It's gonna be hard for anyone to keep them down.

It's pretty bad to be out dueled by Fleury in a playoff series. Still seems like Columbus is short a number one center too. Wennberg is solid but he was thoroughly invisible this series. Columbus just had nobody who could take over on offense.

There were a few people during Bob-for-Hart talk who made the argument the CBJ might've still been a playoff team this year with above average goaltending. The question is can they overcome if Bob doesn't stand on his head Vezina-style? They did in 2013-14 (2.38, .923).

You mean like last year when Montreal didn't make the playoffs without Price?

I'm pretty down on PLD. He did not have the type of season you'd hope for from a #3 pick. If he's an impact player for Columbus next year it's because they're horrible.

What attitude problem?
If Columbus was still in the west I would undoubtedly be pulling for them. A well fought series.

I don't really care about the outcome of the Wideman suit, but the defense and ruling there could really gently caress the NHL in that concussion lawsuit. If the defense uses the concussion to try to limit his culpability to Hendersen's injuries it could cause all sorts of trouble for the league. And considering the arbitrator who lowered his suspension did so by accepting the concussion testimony, there's no reason they won't use it here as well.
