Yo there is a lot of hate in The Gay Thirties. That is the most bitter and spiteful "remember the good old days" thing I think I've ever seen. Like wow, what was so gay about that magical time when every couple bitched each other out over everything and all the kids are perpetually unhappy?

Also is Understanding Chaos by the dude who drew that strip about the rich dude and the homeless dude? The funny angles and perspectives on the characters, the woman in particular, remind me of that.

I think The Gay Thirties is very tongue-in-cheek. It's a slice of life that, I think, demonstrates some eighty years later, the more things change the more they stay the same.

I dunno, it just seems like everything is so constantly negative. See that one where the kid has a violin set and sees a shaggy busker and it's like "that's where you're going if you try to learn the violin, chump!"

Also I was slightly wrong, I never read the publication dates and assumed it was a 40s or 50s "remember the day" strip. Looks like it was contemporary to the 30s. Still really negative.

Not sure. All I know about Gustavo Rodriguez is he's a political cartoonist with a good style wasted on a lot of bland centrist opinions.

I think the Gay Thirties is derivative even in its time, but I like the young couples arguing. They were up against Bumstead with a sandwich, Oh, Diana! and Homer Hoopee! (Also Scorchy Smith, which is awesome and I want to post, but the quality and continuity is lacking for a drama strip.)

But I post Andy Capp, so what the gently caress do I know?
