On another note, though, Robojumper made something that's just comically awesome: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=926686462 A mod which turns some of the idling animations into units going into suppressing fire animations against targets of opportunity. It looks amazing in action.

If anyone was having crashing issues running the community highlander with LW2 for this, we've just fixed and published to workshop.

Outstanding afternoon. "I've often said there's nothing better for the inside of a man than the outside of a horse."

So is it purely a cosmetic thing or are they actually using suppressing fire on eachother?

Also I don't think I got any conclusion on wether or not there's a way to turn off the action camera when one of your guys fires out of overwatch? Any mods or anything?

robojumpers mod is purely cosmetic, and at random, sort of like the original XCOM previs work.

I'm working on a mod that's gonna make use of it, but instead it's to show who's under the effect of ambient suppression (because all fire suppresses to some degree)

I finally stopped being a wuss and started playing on Commander (vanilla XCOM2, not LW2). It's definitively more interesting and after a few unsuccessful campaigns due to bad starts (mostly of my own fault, but that one time I had the Viper King showing up on the first supply raid wasn't possible, I think, to beat with 4 Squaddies). Anyway I found a base construction and research order I like but there's something I don't know how to solve. In the very early game you get a couple of Retaliation missions and you can't possibly have Battles Scanners or Scanning Protocol when they show up. How do you deal with Faceless in that case? In many cases, they turn because one of my soldier is too close, and typically will either one-hit her or get her to 1 HP (best case ; mostly they kill them).

I tried not getting too close to the civs but sometimes, depending on the map layout, you can't progress fast enough if you keep your distances with the civs. So I haven't found a good solution to that. Is this one of those case where you just rely on luck and/or accept to lose Squaddies?

Also, is XP lower on Commander than Veteran? My guys seem to take a long time between promotions.

I was thinking about that the other day. I really liked those maps because it felt very 50-60's SciFi where grunts show up in the middle of Tennesse because the Air Force shot down an UFO and the alien crew took refuge in the nearby farm. Those were the best.

You can get Battle Scanners before the first retaliation mission, even on legendary, and honestly it's been an age since I played a campaign properly but I prioritise getting them out in time. You need that scouting knowledge to move fast with the Ranger you've hopefully got Phantom on so you can aggressively move ahead.

Oh I see! This must be the Bad Opinion Zone!
Keep your guys away from cars and faceless shouldn't be a big problem. I mean yeah they have a decent chance of wounding your guys but they probably won't kill them - their melee attack has an AOE, but the damage isn't super high and it can miss. I don't think it's actually that worthwhile to slow yourself down with scanning protocol etc, your priority in retaliations should be to cover ground somewhat quickly, to buy yourself the time to handle the *other* aliens.

I find the Flashbangs - to clean overwatches, break Mind Controls, block Lancers - or Smokes - for those cases you can't find a high cover - more useful for all missions except Retaliation so I go for those first. And the Faceless can definitively one-hit a Rookie. I got some campaigns where after my first gold move a Faceless did just that, leaving me with 3 squadies for the rest of the mission and that was the end of the campaign.

I have no idea how to counter that kind of situation.

My first faceless was unspoiled, and on Commander. I just did a huge belly laugh when I saw him morph and accepted the XCOM moment, it's fine. You're allowed to fail the mission objective now and then, you know.

INSTEAD I AM GOING TO WHINE ABOUT IT IN OTHER THREADS SO MY OPINION CAN FEEL VALIDATED IN AN ECHO CHAMBER I LIKE

I never use battle scanners and I've beaten vanilla on commander and legendary. Just stay the gently caress away from civvies and don't stand near explodey poo poo, half of the time the faceless will miss anyway; the rest of the time the faceless will either wound a guy, or will be the last alien on the map so it turns but is too far away from your guys to hurt you.

Also bear in mind that a faceless within charging distance of your troops will reveal AND act on his turn. A faceless revealed by proximity on YOUR turn won't get an action until his turn. So in many ways it can be better to reveal a faceless by getting close to a civilian because then at least you have a small chance at reactive fire.
For maximum caution, saving civilians should be done on blue moves by the first one or two troops in a turn.

Someone else asked a few pages back, and if anyone answered I missed it, but is there a fix to the problem with key bindings not being properly saved? I've done the things recommended around the time of the game's launch such as removing (I can't remember the file names) and I'm still having to re-assign them every time I launch the game.

I completely burned myself out after beating my head against LW2 I think before even the 1.2 patch came out. Reading the 1.3 stuff got me itching but god drat the game is so time intensive. I probably poured a hundred hours into my last attempt at iron man/commander and I think got a single liberation done across probably 10 campaigns that all failed miserably.

I'm REALLY enjoying the change to pod sizes and density in 1.3, along with the map changes. The maps are just so much loving bigger, it's astounding, with evac points frequently being on the opposite side of the map from the jail or vehicle. And Smash & Grab is just awesome.

Near perfect game. Too bad about that one VIP that got blown up by mistake.

This was my first time playing with both of the DLCs so I figure I'd give my thoughts on them.

Alien Hunters: I love this one. I'd heard a lot of complaints about it and was expecting it to be a mess, but its actually super fun. The rulers really pose a different kind of challenge than your normal encounter. Them being able to show up at any time really makes things tense. I only wish there were more rulers for me to kill! The gear you get from killing them looks ridiculous but I think its appropriate for Xcom. They're pretty barbaric in this game. My only major complaint is that the frost bombs are grossly OP on normal enemies. Feels like cheating to use them since they can solve basically any bad encounter.

Shen's Last Gift: Less thrilled about this one. Sparks can be cool, but they have a problem; there's no customization for them beyond skills. Obviously you're gonna compare them to MECs, and MECs had way more options to work with. Not being able to use PCs and weapon mods on them sucks. Also I have no clue why they get a gremlin for hacking. Their tech skill is miserable and can't be improved in any way so there's never a time where you'd want to use one versus a specialist. Not sure how much I'm gonna actually use them since the cost for making one is pretty hefty.

Now to mash my head against impossible.

Depending on the ADVENT strength of the region and associated activity level in a mission, you see a lot more instances of 2-unit pods and 3-unit pods. It means a firefight where your small squad gets an add doesn't mean you're dealing with 8 enemies at once, but maybe 5. It really changes the flow of things.

God, I love that Idle Suppression mod. So much fun.

Also, I really want to try some of the stuff in Fireborn's vanilla missions mod, but holy drat are those mission types unfriendly in the early game. Nothing quite like getting the Resistance Fortress as your first retaliation and ending up with 20+ active enemies a couple turns in. Or having your second Guerilla Op turn into the "Alien Experiments are attacking a city" thing with the all-around terrifying poo poo going on with THAT.
