Weedle posted:Since you're here, have you considered adding some kind of cloud save support to Sproggiwood for iOS? All of my progress is on my phone but I would love to play it on my iPad as well. Even just some kind of Dropbox upload would be great. Yeah, it's much requested, I got cloud saves working in a recent patch on Steam, so it's a matter of finding the time to port the tech to iOS. I'm fighting for hours in the day atm.

Oh, no, yeah, I meant TOME4. I've goofed around extremely briefly with Python and C# when I took a look at Unity a while back, but being able to see and get my hands into the meat of a game that actually exists instead of trying to build something from scratch feels like it might make more sense.

Yeah, MidBoss dev is just venting while working---I don't even flinch at the likes of this anymore since it is virtually guaranteed to happen with any commercial Roguelike dev trying to put out a comprehensive effort in the wake of Dredmor(Hell, they went through much of the same!) and thread the various needles of folks out to dump on whatever they do via impossible standards whereas they'd have probably passed the game over had they not made any effort to strive at all while also tending to folks that are harsh as hell with critique out of love of the game and wanting to make an impression on their concerns such that things hopefully get that much better. "Attempts at improved U/I/options/etc? In 2017? How Dare You!" You can pick up on notes of this in the Roguelike Radio ep, not about "get gud casual" so much as Behold My Bold Cat Herding Machinations!(Please bear with me as I get mauled by cats while the kinks gets worked out~)

PMush Perfect posted:I like my metaphor more, because Nethack really does generate some good stories, it's just run through the filter of "oh, right, this story happened back when these kinds of things were okay to do/say". See: Cockatrice shenanigans. Now I'm trying to think of a game with modern design sensibilities that could allow for the types of shenanigans that NetHack does. I think you'd have to set it up as a series of micro-scenarios, each of which is crafted to exploit the edge cases of the system. So you'd have a level where the player's only weapon is a cockatrice corpse, and the level would be set up to try to trick them into stoning themselves with it. I don't think such a thing would necessarily work well as a roguelike, but it could be a fun game. You could name it The Dev Team Thought of Everything.

Nuke Throne does this the best, I think. Pickups, including XP, time out, so you have to charge forward to get them instead of plinking away from safety. Cursed ammo pickups are better than normal ones, but don't last as long and literally explode when they do. That explosion can kill you. Yes, I have died to trying to get ammo.

Nethack is a bad game but a hell of an experience. I can't recommend it in good conscience now, but I've had more fun with nethack than dozens of 'better' games. ^^Strix - just keep playing. You'll get there. Nuclear Throne is so good. Only a crippling injury stopped me from playing that game daily.

Have any Dream Quest nerds figured out how the heck you win with Priest? I've won with the other basic classes but Priest just seems sorta bad at everything. They seem like maybe you're supposed to spec them into defense spellcasters who use things like poison / shields, but that archetype seems bad because there are just too many enemies you need to burst down quickly. Maybe this is just me being generally bad at spells talking, though - my only Wizard win was basically going pure electricity thindeck which seems like the most brainless way to use spells.

I remember Hengband being way better than animeband, although I don't know if it's still being maintained. It was a ZAngband-derived variant made by a Japanese dude and slightly shakily translated, with piles of anime and video game crap loaded in. It also had piles of new mechanics and absolutely awful game balance, but in the fun "everything is exploding" kind of way.

# ? Jun 18, 2017 00:10 |

PosChengband (goddamn these variant names get ridiculous) is descended from Chengband which I think is descended from Hengband which came from ZAngband which came from Angband. And PosChengband is still actively developed. I don't know how anime it is though.

if you've never played angband you owe it to yourself to do it much like nethack it's a relic of a different time but unlike nethack it's not abandoned, so you do get a more modern experience in some ways it's diablo 2 hardcore in ascii more or less

Tooting my own horn, but for those that can't be arsed to play it, I did LPs of Angband and ToME 2. The ToME 2 run is pretty twinkish and more focused on seeing the sights (including a visit to the Void, the bonus postgame dungeon), while the Angband LPs are just straight-up dungeon diving.
