So how do you ambush someone with their shields down? Seems like something we should try to do? Or is it simply too difficult with regards to being spottet way before you're able to do anything?

Theoretically, have good passive sensors and launch passive EM locking missiles before they see you. You ideally want to hit them before their shields are fully charged.

The way this works is that you launch your missiles inline with where they are traveling/where the are staying. They detect the missiles as they close to engagement range and pop their shields which massively boosts their EM sig. Passive EM locking missiles target the largest EM sig so they would all target the ship that is trying to raise its shields in time, hopefully blowing through them.

We could make them but at this tech level we are likely to make sacrifices to warhead strength to fit the sensors in. Im not too worried about shield strength because at this point i think all it means is they will eat a few more missiles then normal before the shield collapses. They might be neat to have for ambushes though since they technically don't need an active sensor lock to work. Mines with passive sensors would also work but I think they would go off if anybody went near them so they are best used as the second stage of an area denial weapon.

The best option for dealing with them would be strike craft outfitted with a meson cannon which would literally let us shred anything and everything. Dont know if that is an option though. Failing that anything with mesons or microwaves would be useful to tear them apart from close range.

If we had weapons that go through shields and armour like they're not there, I expect something we already had would mount the things.

I think IC has them, so recovery of those would be nice, if we get enough we can either salvage them for data or bolt the recovered ones to a hull or two.

But yeah, I believe that is tech we do not currently have at this point.

For people not familiar with Aurora, mesons ignore all shields and all armor but only deal a single point of damage to internal components. That being said they can be turreted and can be put on fighters which means damage adds up very quickly, especially when they hit magazines or engines or power plants.

No, there's only a few techs you can't build from the start. The problems with mesons are low range, high power requirements, and only doing 1 damage per hit.

Yeah mesons are absolute bullshit IF they can get in range. They're balanced by abysmally short ranges and high power/space requirements. If they're on fighters or, say, a massively armored and shielded battleship like the Jobs to get them in range, though.....

Interlude 4 - A sky full of silence

Saros posted:

“Well…. it sort of looks like something tried to turn on and then exploded”

The facility seems to shift under Autoshade’s feet and strange lights dance at the corner of his vision as something seems to press itself against the inside of his skull. The feeling is gone as quickly as it arrives but as it leaves another worrying fact asserts itself. His armor is locking down comms and weapons as it registers a massive electronic warfare onslaught and amber alerts flash along his helmet display as it struggles to maintain its security in the face of something attempting a crude but incredibly powerful intrusion onto the Marine’s secure network.

The protector drone holding the doctor slowly settles to the ground as it shuts down in the face of being compromised by the intrusion and the doctor writhes free of its grasp and leaps through the hole in the structure.

Autoshades curses and throws himself after her, registering as he does all of the company drones settling or slowly falling from the sky as they go into emergency shutdown mode. He passes beyond the threshold and stumbles, the electronic assault increasing in intensity and beginning to freeze his suit motors and visual display. Suddenly everything goes dark, the armor of both him and the specialist inside the structure rebooting with all the external lights extinguished.

As his armor slowly comes back online it fills with strange images and noise of unknown origin.

The aliens love grinding up fish, yes, but whales aren't fish. We can feed them all the tuna they want, but anyone who lays a finger on a whale goes right to the top of the Space Gulag list. I might not have been able to save them in Strike Command, but I'll be damned if I can't save them here.

Also our minefield might have some unintended positive effects. IC ships might want to take a longer route to avoid any minefields and that'd give us more time to prepare.

Reccomended listening.

30 March, 0411hrs

Lagging almost 200 million km behind the main IC fleet Triton's passive arrays pick out four Iron Lady transports moving at 1600kps.

30 March, 1211hrs

Tornado, having picked up her escort frigates diverts north to hopefully get a look at the following fleet. IC main force is 500mkm from Neptune and The Triton defense fleet moves to the moon closest to them, Psanthe.

1st April, 1431hrs

Tornado and company fall in behind the incoming fleet. It's now close enough for the cruisers to be tracked on passives so Tornado is dispatched to investigate the following force.

1741hrs

Here's hoping for unprotected transports however unlikely that is.

The transport and support ships also head out to the north in case the battle goes badly.

2 April, 0659hrs

Tornado reaches range of the second fleet and hits her actives. Looks like a cruiser and two DD, too many escorts to tangle with.

22 April, 0811hrs

Somewhat forgotten, the 38th brigade finishes landing on swift Tuttle, liberation time!

1455hrs

Heavy fighting but the 38th is slowly but surely pushing them back.

2 April, 1816hrs

The IC force splits in two, the support ship, missile cruiser and the Steve Jobs slowing to 2000kps while the others continue at 2300kps.

2 April, 2212hrs

Combat continues of S-T with the defenders starting to disintegrate...

2 April, 2246hrs

At the very end of the day something interesting happens...

Well, something else interesting.

VICTORY AT SWIFT-TUTTLE! THE POPULACE IS LIBERATED.

3 April, 0101hrs

Oh.... oh my! Looks like they wandered into the range of one of the minefield Pods.

Shields flare into existence and the actives of all ships go loud as the IC picks up the missile launches from the pods.

Desperate point defence fire shoots down nearly 25 missiles but the IC ships have been running without shields up so they have barely had time to gain any shield strength!

Over eighty submunitions impact a Bill Gates Cruiser and wipe her minimal shields out before gutting her from prow to stern.

The remaining forty retarget on a missile boat and she suffers a similar fate, nuclear explosions tearing her apart in an orgy of destruction.

SCRATCH TWO!

Artists impression of the Martian Triton fleet ambushing IC ships off Neptune.

The two IC forces are separated by a few million km with transports and extra combat ships 300 million km behind them.

Right now our ships are orbiting Psamathe, where their missiles and those of the PDC have equal reach out from Triton. Moving further out means losing PDC support and no other mine pods are in position where the IC forces will likely run over them.

Triton Defense:

However the spacers are champing at the bit to go after the (still powerful) IC forces before they can move the rest of the invasion force up.

MVP of the round goes to Cryo for his missile pod idea.

:siren:Do we press the attack despite losing PDC support or sit tight behind its powerful missile umbrella.:siren:

Sit tight, the entire point of engaging them here is that we've got the PDC watching our asses. No reason to throw that away, especially when their spearhead just lost a third of its strength and might be pulling back.
