As far as the subtitles, I think I'm just going to keep the pictures, but transcribe the text anyways. That way people can see the pictures, but still read the dialogue. I'm already transcribing all the rest of the dialogue, so why not add in a few more sentences? Also, thanks. If there's anything I'm good at it's blindly doing something no matter how ridiculous it is. Besides, making this sslp is fun, so I'm enjoying myself. I have my own project that requires feedback: A zero-commentary VR lets play. I was thinking about adding commentary, but it proved difficult to have anything to say that I couldn't convey via actions or the rather verbose in-game character. This isn't the final take of the first episode either, just a showcase of general interactions and how they look on video.

I can safely say you've made a ton of progress, this looks really solid. I'd go ahead and , and good luck! Just as a minor note, when you're transcribing the narration at the start, there are a few odd bits where a line you've just transcribed gets repeated in the screenshot following/preceding it, in the "On a cliff..." and "This gilded cage..." shots specifically. You can probably cut that out of the text transcription, since it's in the screenshot, but that's a pretty small detail.

Hi friends I need some hot takes. I'm going to be doing some videos on a very wordy game (Our Darker Purpose). Each boss (and most levels) have a blurb of lore associated with them, so I'm trying to decide if I should read it out during gameplay or just leave it all as supplementary reading. Generally I hate when people read dialog in LPs, but on the other hand the lore itself is almost always buried in a sub-menu and not displayed directly on the screen for people to just read at the given time. Also it might help the atmosphere maybe? Who knows! Here's a video where I read the stuff. Relevant points are the beginning, 6:50, 11:20, 19:18, and the end.

Why not just have the lore blurbs as screenshots in the thread?

Yeah, I think the best option is to screenshot or transcribe the lore in the thread.

One thing that immediately stands out is that you talk over the dialogue, that's generally a bad thing, especially in a game where the voices are as quiet and hard to understand as HL. I'd also try to focus the commentary on what's going on right now - you'll have plenty of time to get to background of the game and its influence when nothing new is happening so it's better to give the audience some sense of what you're doing.

Wasn't sure if I should post this in the Tech thread or the Sandcastle, but here goes. Quality check for Call of Duty. I'm trying to capture at 720p 60fps, but I just can't seem to get it up to standard. I thought maybe I'm just being too much of a perfectionist, so I wanted to see what you guys thought of the quality in this video. I'm not exactly a whiz when it comes to video compression, but I followed several tutorials and this is the best I could come up with. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzI4dJebtBM What do you guys think? Is the quality okay or should I keep trying?

Not sure where else to put this, but a lot of LPs use soundcloud for hosting background music or whatever, so, uh, it seems to be going the way of the dodo within the next few months.

Tindeck has been stuck in a holding pattern for awhile now of being dying, dead, wait no its not its fine for now, oops its dying again for like years at this point. It's kind of impressive, honestly. Soundcloud is approaching the start of that, sure, but I don't think it's going to be completely gone this year or anything. (now watch as its completely in the ground by august )

Run your commentary though a noise filter to take out that background hiss. You won't hear it on lovely laptop speakers or anything, but anyone with a half-decent set of headphones will hear it whenever you talk. This can be quickly and easily done in Audacity.

So for example, each individual soundtrack from the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy is in the 4-5 hour range in total length. So you'd be able to get one and a bit's game's OST up on Clyp, but no more than that.

I'd appreciate any feedback on this, I'm planning on doing a fully subtitled LP and it's my first time doing that. If it's too intrusive, not intrusive enough, etc. It is Brutale because...the master thought it more exotic. Let's Play The Sexy Brutale! What is this? The Sexy Brutale is a bit of a murder mystery game that came out in April 2017. It runs a little chunky in spots, maybe not the best optimization, but it is rather charming! Playing as somewhat of a mix between Ghost Trick and Majora's Mask, the game follows the fate of ten guests at the titular casino during the annual masquerade ball. Things don't seem quite right however, what with the staff killing off the guests and all. Over the course of 12 repeating hours, we'll discover the truth behind the murders and the Full-House Staff, and hopefully save a few lives along the way. What has happened at the Sexy Brutale? Who is the bloodied woman? And where is the Marquis in all this? Since this game is extremely story based and there's a lot going on, I'm planning on doing a subtitled LP. I'll try to keep my commentary minimal to explain things and otherwise let the game speak for itself. It's my first time going about that so if anything is unclear or needs fixing, please let me know. Generally I'll be following the victim(s) around to show their movements. Then I'll follow the murderer to see how they've done it. Finally we'll figure out how to prevent their untimely demise. The game is not very long but it is extremely story based. Don't spoil anything if you know what's coming up. Videos! Reginald Sixpence, the Clockwork Baron/Polsy

After watching(/reading?) a subtitled LP I had a random thought: are subtitles better at the bottom of the screen, or at the top?

Mraagvpeine posted:After watching(/reading?) a subtitled LP I had a random thought: are subtitles better at the bottom of the screen, or at the top? Bottom is the default, and I would assume that it's the default for a reason, but that reason may well pertain to stuff like e.g. how shots in movies are usually composed, which aren't necessarily relevant to videogames*. So I suspect the answer is "it depends". Certainly if there's important information at the bottom of the screen, you don't want your subtitles to cover that. * Hell, it could be as simple as "the bottom of the screen is usually darker, providing better contrast for subtitle text".

I think it depends on what's going on with the game's UI; I went with top for Last Light since the game's subs were at the bottom and, while I tried avoiding 'talking' over game dialogue, I had to do it from time to time for timing purposes so it made sense having them at the top. For Inside I went with subs at the bottom since there's no dialogue or prompts. /edit: let me expand a bit. Also remember that I'm not an authority on subtitles by any means, this is just what I learned from my extensive history of 2 LPs (!?). This is from LL. As TooMuchAbstraction mentioned, subs may have worked better at the bottom here for more contrast. Since I have a bit of a drop shadow going it's not terrible though. Now, this is a good example of what not to do: I was syncing by sound instead of video; my line actually goes away a split second before Anna actually starts talking, her subs show up a bit ahead of time but I really should have made that line go away half a second sooner to avoid the clutter. If I had gone for subs at the bottom, though, you can see how it would become an even bigger mess. Finally, Inside. The main character is usually positioned closer to the bottom of the screen, so I didn't want people having to 'dart' their eyes up and down every time I said something, and also the lower part is usually darker, tying again into contrast. Keep in mind that too much contrast is a thing though; those subs have a ~30% transparency on them because it made them super annoying and clashed horribly against the game's style otherwise. Trick question, the real answer is the whole frame: But for real though, the bottom half of the frame (Somewhere between the bottom and center) works out fine in a lot of cases.

So I suspect the answer is "it depends". There's a certain amount of inertia to subtitles being on the bottom. Because it's the default and has been for awhile you can be fairly certain that your audience members know how to efficiently dart their eyes between your subtitles and the action going on with those subs being at the bottom. Subtitles being at the top are also common, though mostly because there's already important info at the bottom (like more subtitles or the focus of the action.) Typically if there's both the bottom subtitles are more important than the top, which usually provide additional, optional information.
