So Couch Chat, I'm some sort of weird crazy person who has watched almost nothing but movies for my entire life. I've only seen a small handful of TV shows to completion, and a few episodes or first seasons here and there. And most of what I've watched have been recent. My girlfriend and co-workers have been telling me to catch up on stuff for forever now and I'm just now getting around to doing it. I've seen the following shows in their entirety:

Firefly
Deadwood
Westworld
Twin Peaks
Fargo
True Detective
American Gods
The Walking Dead
Legion

And uhh....that's it. I think I have a long way to go. :aaa:

Breaking Bad now. As you watch it, pick a thread to update with your thoughts as you're blown away by how awesome it is. It's got excellent acting, writing, story, cinematography, humor, tension, excitement, drama, pacing, music, everything really. It's the kind of show that consistently gets better from the 1st episode to the end. (Opposite of this would be Walking Dead which did the reverse) There will be no disappointing let down seasons.

I'm surprised to see that someone that has Walking Dead, Westworld, and Firefly listed would not have Game of Thrones. Check that out.

It's on my list! My long, long extensive list that will last me for the next decade of tv watching.

I'll check both of these out. I've seen BoJack on Netflix, but haven't watched it. I'm definitely into a well-executed Dad joke. Seems like it could be up my alley. You're the Worst - Romantic comedy is not up my alley, but MEAN romantic comedy that deals with heavier subjects grabs me a bit, so I'll give it a shot.

Thanks again for the recommendations. I thought a few folks might be interested in seeing me dive face-first into shows they've loved forever and I've had zero exposure to. I'll post some updates as I go along. :)

DP's recommendations require a lot of time and patience to bear fruit, and alot of them thrive by building off and playing with previous established archetypes. Considering that and your lack of exp with TV, I wouldn't watch PoI or You're The Worst. Instead these might be more up your alley:

Mad Men
The Wire
Rome
Carnivale
X-Files (at least the first couple of seasons)
Breaking Bad
People v. OJ (I would recommend the ESPN OJ doc, but it doesn't seem like you watch sports. How about other docs?)
Simpsons (seasons 3-8)
Seinfeld
My So Called Life (do you care about high school set shows? Well this and Freaks and Geeks are the best ones)
The Twilight Zone
ER (the first four seasons or so)
Band of Brothers
Frasier
Better Off Ted

I would recommend stuff that is more personal to me, but still don't have quite a sense of what stuff you like. But the above is a good start.

The premises for some great shows really don't sound that great though. It took me years to try Breaking Bad because "Why would I want to watch a show about a guy with cancer? No thanks." Come to find out because people wouldn't shut up about it, it had much much more humor and was a lot more fun than you would expect. It was actually more of a fun show than a depressing show.

I completely expected to get buried under recommendations, especially when my list of shows I've seen isn't very specific and I haven't watched enough shows to really develop more narrowed down preferences. My most helpful statement was, "I'm not picky," and that's me painting some pretty unhelpful broad strokes there. I'll save being picky for when I've got a better reference for shows I like and shows that I bounce off of.

I'm happy to get recommendations and start building a backlog. For every Breaking Bad, The Wire, or Sopranos I've heard of, there's recommendations like Dancer mentioning ReGenesis and Patriot, both of which sound interesting (especially Patriot) and that I've never heard of at all. I started BoJack Horseman last night, You're The Worst seems interesting, and I'm also interested in Wonderfalls and BrainDead that got recommended. All of which I've never/barely heard of. It's also nice to have a few shorter, easier to digest shows alongside the heavy-hitters. That being said, I'm throwing it all on the list to at least check out as I get to it. I'm good with the "Must Watch" and newer stuff, I'd like to think I'll get to all (most) of it eventually.

For what it's worth, in regards to movies, I might be able to narrow down recommendations by saying:
-I like horror a lot
-I have a high-tolerance/love for "So Bad It's Good" cheesy, B-Grade, or dumb fun stuff.
-Regular comedy tends to not do much for me, but black comedy works well (Coen Brothers, Edgar Wright, Shane Black)
-Not opposed to animated shows, I like what I've seen of Archer and Bob's Burgers. My girlfriend tried to get me into Steven Universe and Adventure Time, but I didn't like either.
-Crime drama/Mafia movies are an interest of mine (I'll probably dig The Wire a lot)

Again, even with the billion recommendations, thanks for all the help, Goons. It gives me a list to sort through and figure out.

If you're interested in Patriot I'd definitely say check that one out soon. It's so weirdly underrated outside of this board but I LOVE IT. It definitely has a Coen black comedy feel.

And crime + black comedy is a good sign for Sopranos. Add existentialism in there and you have the trifecta.

I did but that by itself didn't tell me if it was going to be geared more towards a depressing show or a fun exciting often humorous show.

For about episodes 3-5 of Season 1 where he's telling his family, they're crying, and they're debating chemo, that was closer to what I expected. I thought it would continue with him slowly dying. Who could have known his cancer would go into remission in the middle of Season 2 and it wouldn't be a factor until the very end.

Just to be perfectly clear, my endorsments of Wynonna Earp are completely unrelated to Several Goblins' asking for recommendations. You guys all have that covered.

The only show that I recommended Wynonna Earp over was The Mist.

I would only recommend Wynonna Earp to people who are fans of the Buffy, I Zombie, Grimm, Supernatural, Sleepy Hollow type shows. It's solidly in that subgenre, and really particularly special within it. But it is funny.

Yeah, Wynonna Earp is fun but it's weird to recommend it over classic tv. But like it's a fine palette cleanser between longer/better/deeper shows like Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Friday Night Lights, Wire, Sopranos, Six Feet Under, etc.

I mean, I always insist on the first five seasons of Supernatural but I wouldn't push it before The Wire. Unless you have really specific tastes.

I think if The Mist had a different tone I would actually like it. It's just so serious most of the time that the ridiculous dialog and writing make me cringe. Then out of nowhere a guy turns into a moth.

If it was more of the fun monster stuff instead of rapey jock forcing a girl to hold his hand to prove he didn't rape her then I think it would be much better. The fucker actually says "Just do it and I'll let you go."

I don't really mean to keep going on about this show, but to call it really well done is pretty crazy to me. I can get liking the show, I like plenty of bad shows. But I don't go around telling people they're good shows.

With X-Files you can go through the first five seasons and the first movie and still be in solid territory; ER is reliably good, with the occasional :wtc: clunker, until Anthony Edwards leaves (so ... end of season eight, I think); and I'd swap Better Off Ted with the first four seasons of How I Met Your Mother. Admittedly, this is because I have absolutely never gotten into Better Off Ted despite a half-dozen attempts, and those early years of HIMYM are just great.

Just ... stop watching after the fourth season finale, though. Holy poo poo, holy holy holy poo poo, it's like with the very first minute of season five, Carter Bays and Craig Thomas decided they wanted to hate-gently caress their audience for the next five years.

Edit: Also, skipping Simpsons season 2 means you miss the first Treehouse of Horror (which is the one with The Raven), Bart Gets an F and Lisa's Substitute.

Going off similar shows and character dynamics

Justified- If you liked Timothy Olyphant in Deadwood you'll love this

Person of Interest- Sort of case of the week police procedural that quickly ends up as one of the best portrayals/discussion about technology and the rise of the surveillance state. Slow start, this thread had the poster who kept saying they were going to give up before S2 then loved the heck out of it.

Try one of the Netflix MCU shows and see how you like it. Same for the DC Arrowverse stuff. Arrow started the trend but now it includes Arrow, Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl

One of the Cinemax/Starz violence porn shows, like Spartacus, Banshee, Strike Back, might be your thing based on your list.

List of currently on Netflix shows that you might enjoy

Sons of Anarchy- 1% Bike gang drama with heavy Shakespearian overtones at first. Became pretty notorious in the SA thread for the incredible drop in quality and the blatant personal influence of the show creator, but gave an intensely good first season and a pretty good season 2. Season 3-7 have their merits but also a lot of nonsense

Dexter- Sociopathic serial killer who uses his job as a CSI to hunt and kill criminals. Another "loving epic early season, hot steaming trash years later" if you ask about it.

Longmire- A lot like Justified, rough old school Sherriff trying to keep the peace in his small town, dealing with local Reservation politics, corrupt businesses, personal demons etc.

Luther- If you like True Detective this might scratch that itch. Probably the show that made a ton of people fall in love with Idris Elba

Friday Night Lights- Small town texas football looking as serious as pro-level NFL, great cast and chemistry from the lead actors/actress

Louie- Louis CK does pretty much anything he wants for his comedy/drama show. You don't have many comedies on that list but this is a good show to check out for something far away from the typical comedy show.

Bojack Horseman- Weird, strange, surreal, and occasionally dark as gently caress. It's technically a comedy but not the "haha" kind

Z Nation: Imagine Walking Dead but everyone involved in the show really just wanted to have fun with it. Like a zombie-tornado, a zomnado, being on of the A plots of an episode

Continuum: Canadian sci-fi time travel drama with way more impact and complexity to it then it seems at first glance.

Long running shows that will last you quite some time and see-saw in quality over the years: Stargate SG1, Supernatural, Lost, Downton Abbey.

Cowboy Bebop The "Never watched Japanese anime before what should I watch?"-

Classics everyone will tell you to watch: Sopranos, The Wire, Breaking Bad, Battlestar Galactica The Office, West Wing, Arrested Development, Mad Men, The Shield etc. Many of them started out pretty slow or underrated before riding a tidal wave of critical acclaim and positive media press. Try the 3 episode test and if you're not engaged by that point leave them on the backburner until you're either starting it with someone else or the subject material really interests you.

So I've literally typed up a list of everyone's recommendations and weeded out the (very small) list of stuff that I already know I don't dig. The vast majority are on my backlog list and I'll start going through them. So far...

Started watching BoJack Horseman last night and I'm 5 episodes in. Took me about half the first episode before it clicked. It's pitch black and the voice cast is stellar; I'm liking it. I also started The Blacklist at my girlfriend's recommendation and, despite Raymond Reddington being borderline supernatural at times, I really like it. It's fun and silly/compelling enough to make me want to binge watch it. Also going to be starting The Sopranos on my own time with some Wynonna Earp mixed in for shorter, lighter fair. I'm probably going to keep to watching a heavy hitter to completion while watching something lighter mixed in, and add in a third show to watch with the lady.
