So they actually dropped VR support? When using VR in a space sim is super amazing?

Is it because the game runs at 10 fps?

So if you get blown up you should spend a week without a ship, yeah that sounds reasonable and wouldn't make anyone quit the game or anything. I'm sure those players would all spend the downtime scrubbing space toilets and stacking space crates on some whale's ship instead. Guys like Lethality won't have to do this, of course, because they have a couple dozen ships to rotate between

Well, guys like Lethality could easily end up dying 20 times as often in-game and have the same problem. Of course, that would require the game to come out and have the whole thing actually work, so...

There's a list of reasons, that being one of them. Others are headbob 2.0 and all the immersion animations

Funnily enough, that's the least of their actual problem, next to the fundamental incompatibility with everything they've designed so far, but it's probably the one reason that Chris would possibly understand or acknowledge. The notion that all their camera work, animation work, 1P/3P-integration work, fidelity filter work, and… well… you know, the stuff that makes for fancy bullshot material (and thus is the only thing they've actually worked on) is directly detrimental and contrary to proper VR design or immersion is just too much to bear.

People will give you many technical reasons. They can't keep the framerate high enough, the animation system is entirely unsuited to VR, blah blah.

The real reason is they're useless fucks who're completely out of their loving depth. Basic VR support was in and working, not because CIG did anything proactive but because it was already a Cryengine feature. Then something they did broke VR support, and they're too dumb to know what broke it or how to fix it. That's it.

Forced FPS animations combined with VR is basically a trip straight to barf town.

As soon as they put the first mocap cockpit animation in the game the possibility of VR support was dead and buried. The two are just incompatible, games go to great lengths to not force the camera to move around for VR and here you have elaborate animations where the character climbs in and out of stuff or wiggles around even during regular movement. It gives really bad motion sickness.

Are they actually doing the seamless 'fly yr ship from space down to the surface', or had that gone away?

If so, how much RAM would you need ffs?

The VR specialist they hired to work on VR quit CIG in 2016 to go "work on VR".

VR camera controls are pretty tricky beasts. When I was working on Dirt Rally, we had to decouple the camera from certain crash situations (which are physics based) to reduce the problems associated with nausea.
For example the camera temporarily decouples from the drivers head node when the car starts to roll. Its critical you do things like this if you want your game to even be remotely playable in VR, oh and having a high FPS is critical, and no longer a "nice thing to have", that effects the whole team too, as everyone has to code and design assets for efficiency.

If you're EU then I can do that for you, if you're NA then I'm sure there's a Goon in the WoWS thread that can do it.

Another direct solid Citizen response to why the website still says 100 systems at launch in a bunch of places despite it being common knowledge for "years" now that that wouldn't be the case.

Funny story.
A couple of weeks back a recruiter for F42's manchester studio contacted someone here, when that person asked what the job security was like, the recruiter said they'd check and get back to them.
They never did get back to my mate... Go figure.

There's a bit of snickering going on regarding the water simulation over at the TCE forums, nice to see as the Star Citizen thread is been in hibernation there for a while.
A few devs pointing out that CIG should really be nailing gameplay before messing around with this sort of thing.

Its interesting, as unless this is critical to SC's development, then this sort of research is what you do between projects when there is nothing else to do.
