OK, having it a few hours, it's better than I was expecting. Not great, not mediocre, there's some interesting things with the upgrades and poo poo, and I am actually down with the goofy morning action figure cartoon vibe with the ludicrous plot. I dunno, it's weird because I was sceptical going in and yet I decided not to wait, and have found myself having a good time between the variance between the street battles and the base/lair fights. But that's only the first 4-5 hours in. Whether it has staying power, yeah, that's still up for debate. But at this stage I'm giving this a solid 8 (on the usual game review scale is everything below 7 is terrible). At first I thought the open world felt a bit lacking, but there I was, just minding my own business and I decide to take out a patrol because why not, and before you know it everything's escalating and suddenly it's just like old times. I'm not even sure what some of the dudes' mayhem powers do, but Braddocks and Gats (as mentioned) are pretty baller. (And I'm more into it than Red Faction: Space rear end in a top hat where all I wanted to do was demolish space buildings but the space police kept turning up.)

So, I was rather hesitant about grabbing this, if only due to not seeing much of the streams or release info, but I'm glad I dropped the preorder on it. Sure, it's not Stillwater in terms of how active the city is, but Seoul is surprisingly good to look at, and the aesthetic for the game in general is just fantastic, though I'm probably biased due to loving the wacky 'Saints Row styled version of G.I. Joe vs Cobra'. It's a wacky, unfiltered 80's Saturday Morning Cartoon and I love it, even if I am a sucker for aesthetic over gameplay.

I don't think I've noticed if there's any aircraft in the game, haven't seen any in previews or anything. Or even any real vehicle variety aside from variations on super cars. Question is, how's traversing the city handle? I know you can triple jump but... are there any SR4 levels of absurd travel powers?

The game looks like some hero would be able to crawl walls, not sure about flyiing. With triple jumping you can pass trough absurd distance and jump to almost anywhere. Driving feels weird, like on-rails, and your starting car have nitro for ridiculous speeds, and theres many "very long straigh forward" roads. Traveling in cars is the standard following a GPS with virtual arrows of many videogames.

No aircraft the player can use at least (confirmed by IdolNinja on Steam forums) 2. There are a decent variety of civilian vehicles you can hijack. Agency vehicles are different supercars and SUVs 3. No SR4 level travel powers from what I've seen (I've got 7 of the 12 agents.) Everyone has triple jump + either a wall mantling or air dash.

The only way to get to the top of the very tall buildings is to find some kind of elevator. If you use scan, elevators and things like them appear as a column of green arrows pointing up.

Volition do fun single player shooters. Punisher and Red Faction (free on xbox) were real good. I think RF:Armageddon got a bad press because it was in the shadow of Guerilla. Maybe the same as this. I dunno. Man, I'd love another Volition Punisher game. Nobody gives a poo poo about game violence any more, so they wouldn't have to censor it either.

Unless that changes later on, it's basically just a two part mission to unlock those agents. Then use whoever the hell yo uwant. Though I would suggest keeping at least one with an Air dash around. "Come on Braddock, come on. You can make the jump. gently caress… Okay who else I got?" *Rama smoke bombs and plummets 500 feet*. Other than that, somebody you are comfortable long bombing bullets or abilities with for when someone is on a rooftop ledge you can't get to in a hurry. There are a ton of difficulty settings, and beyond baby zero difficulty they all have scaling grades of Exp/Cash bonus. If you click on it when deploying you can see the estimated recommendation for your average squad levels, for when you want to dust off that guy who is still level three but had set it for something higher than the recommended for a bunch of level 12 murder hobos. For example. I love Braddock, and they murder the gently caress out of things with hipfire headshots at "Close range videogame SMG" ranges. But her airquotes "Accurate long range burst fire" is more that her bullets don't stop in mid air, because you sure as gently caress won't be landing those aimed shots on that rooftop sniper with her unless you use her ability. But Pierce? gently caress it land accidental headshots all day between throwing fabulous explosions. His "Small clip" also feels generous compared to Hollywood after blowing 6+ levels on ammo upgrades thanks to reload speeds. If Pierce's special was a straight line projectile he'd be unstoppable.

There was someone who asked one or two pages back if the characters talk to each other while walking around in the world. After playing this more, I can say that yes this happens fairly often. It's just not necessarily only between characters in your group. It will always involve one character in your group, but who they talk to could be another agent or an npc at your headquarters over the radio.

Has anyone found any particularly meaty synergies among team members? I feel like a terrible strategist, because I've found myself sticking with daisy for everything, braddock in case something has a shield, and any of the characters with master hacker as my #3 because some missions require it. It's utilitarian, but I feel like I'm losing tons of utility by just relying on two unkillable DPS machines.

As far I can tell the synergy is just having diverse characters, so having a character good against shields, one good against armor, maybe one good at hacking, ect.

My enjoyment of this game seems to heavily depend on if I have to fight anywhere near literally any road. "Yeti's got over 19 thousand health, this should be fine-" Civilian car + rooftop sniper, bye yeti. Okay, switch to Hollywood-*immediately slammed by the latest in a long line of bloodthirsty full speed cars* Super murder cars also makes it rather difficult to ever get a bead on rooftop snipers at any angle you are allowed to shoot them from at the time EDIT: okay, okay, I've bounced back and I think I can handle finishing off this max wanted level boss-Nope, Yet is dead again from civilian cars because I backstpped three feet back into the street. That's less dynamic and more wondering why the actual enemies trying to kill me are preferable. "Oh, several Legion sports cars are trying to ram my stolen van to death? No problem. There, glad that's over with. Now to call my own car back over here... Oh a solar powered baby car seems to have declared a blood feud with my advance spy car at speeds previously unknown to science. I was actually intrigued after reading that message because I had the same thought, so I started experimenting with different ways to play her and hit upon one that upped her survivability a lot. She's definitely different from a lot of the other characters. She's not very run and gun. The thing that started working for me was going into stealth as often as possible, and using her special as often as possible. Her regular arrow attack isn't going to be your primary source of damage here. Whenever shes' out of stealth I'm jumping around to dodge shots. As soon as she gets into stealth I'm charging shots up and firing them off.

poptart_fairy posted:Independent of any Saints Row shenanigans, how much stuff is there to do in the game, and does the core loop hold up? There are the main story missions, and then each agent has a few missions for their own personal stories. I'm not sure yet how many each agent has, I think an earlier poster said two not including their intro mission. Besides that there are several different control points to capture from the enemy on the map that they can periodically recapture. The map is -not- very big, so this doesn't get as annoying as it sounds. It also doesn't really effect much but your income, so it's more a way to provide you with more materials, money, and experience. Then there are miscellaneous little repeatable activities to do like rescuing hostages, attacking enemy patrols and enemy vehicles, races, villain lairs, and a few other things I haven't really touched yet. There are also collectible crystal shards which, when you've collected 10, combine to give you a large crystal that you can slot into one of three slots for each agent that gives them some kind of permanent improvement to their abilities. For instance, one slot for one character makes it so that they gain health back for every enemy they kill. For activities not located on the city map, there are two varieties. One variety are contracts, which are lists of things like "Kill this many of this type of enemy", that reward cash and crystals. You can look online to see who else is doing these contracts so that what you each do in your individual games counts towards the collective total. Since these contracts are timed, teaming up with other people is pretty much the only way to do them. Finally there are Global Conflicts. If you've ever played a game like the later Assassin's Creeds where you send people all over the world to investigate different cities, that's basically what these are. They'll reward you with xp and cash, and sometimes you'll uncover Legion lairs which are basically randomly generated dungeons that you accomplish various goals in like killing all enemies in a room or hacking a certain number of control terminals in a room. I've been playing the game for a number of hours now and I'm still having fun, partially due to the variety of agents. They're all pretty likable and fun to play, though obviously your mileage may vary on how much their personalities appeal to you. The animated sequences are nice and though the city's npcs aren't very memorable the city itself is nice to look at.

I'm hemorrhaging Intel because I keep doing the world map stuff, but in the main game I'm not really doing anything that gets me drops like mostly I'm just trying to fill out my car roster and opening up more warp point and stuff. It seems like the lairs might be the go to for a bunch of Intel drops unless someone has a better idea?
