STRONG as an OX and TWICE as SMART
I've golfed off-and-on for years now, but this summer is the first time I've really made an effort to get out at least once a week and go to the range more often. I've been using some decade+ old hand-me-down irons, and they're starting to show their age. I could probably get them re-gripped, but I'd like to treat myself to a new Iron set.

What is a reasonable amount for someone shooting in the 90s on muni courses? I'd like something that I'm going to get years of use out of, but I obviously don't need anything tailored to someone who takes golf more seriously than a hobby. A local pro shop has a new set of steel Cobras, regular flex, 3H/4H/5-PW for $350. Am I stupid for considering buying that?

To a reasonable point, it's the golfer not the clubs. I think you should spend whatever your budget allows.

I hit 4 separate gorgeous 4 iron shots off the grass during my twilight round tonight, felt real loving good. I went 10 years in between having a 4 iron because I sucked so bad at hitting irons in general but after who knows how many lovely iron shots I've hit at the range this summer I've finally started hitting my long irons decently. I almost want to get a 3 iron and ditch my 5 wood now since its actually a club type I look forward to hitting now. Maybe next year...

Whoever said "Drive for Show, putt for Doe" wasn't hitting their tee shot into the woods 30% of the time. Putting means nothing if you can't hit off the tee.

That statement mostly applies to high level players because when you reach a certain level, everyone can hit it well and it becomes a putting contest.

No it doesn't -- what separates pros is long distance / accuracy. Tournament to tournament the winners will have better putting strokes gained stats but that's because there's a huge element of luck in whether or not your putts drop, and the intrinsic standard deviation in your putting stats is way higher than the margin of victory.

Glad we agree.

I'm talking about what separates pros from other pros, not what separates pros from the rest of us (which is literally every aspect of the game).

And, putting doesn't separate them as much as the long game. It's hitting drives farther and straighter, hitting it closer to the hole from 210 yards out that separates the pros.

Dammit Francis!
I had probably my best round of the year on Tuesday. Shot a pretty smooth 78, with two three putts, and two lip outs. Struck the ball just beautifully though.

It's strange, I made a change in my grip earlier this year and I'm easily hitting the best iron shots of my life. At the same time, I'm giving up strokes on the green more than ever before and giving up a lot of strokes off the tee as well(missing way too many fairways). I end up having to punch out 1-3 time a round it seems and it's basically a stroke every time.

I've been playing a lot at a course my parents joined this summer, and while it's nice, the course has completely dried out and is becoming a bit frustrating to play. I have had more fliers out of the rough there than I've ever seen. On hole number 1 I had 179 yards to the pin(middle pin), slightly uphill. I decided to club down 1.5 clubs, expecting a flier, so I hit 8 iron(my 165 club), and I flied it over the green like 20 yards past the pin. Did the same thing with a PW on the 5th hole. The greens are also getting really bumpy for some reason, way too many of my putts were bouncing all over the place.

I need to find an affordable course around here that has fast smooth greens :(.

Frustrating day yesterday. Good day on the range, comfortable. Then, 5 holes of hitting every shot thin. All bogeys because I was putting out of my mind. 6th hole, two good shots, 7, 8, 9 all thin, thin, thin. 8 over on the front.

Thin tee shot, thin second, good shot into the green (par 5), two putt, yay, a par. Good tee shot, good second, two putt, yay, par. Thin drive, thin chip, two putt bogey. Great drive, thin chip, good chip, two putt bogey. Good drive, two putt par. Thin, bogey, and suddenly, it was over. Normal golf for the last three holes, all pars. Never figured out the issue, but after only 15 holes, it was gone. Must have dropped 5 or 6 putts of 10+ feet, and a couple of near 20.

My SoCal trip is winding down, I'm going to the airport in an hour or so to head home. I'm bringing lots of goodies back with me!

The putter that I got hasn't been officially announced yet so we aren't allowed to post pics of them for a couple weeks. The rest of these clubs are being released in a month. The driver is very light and I was struggling to hit the sweet spot just like I used to with my current driver before I added some lead tape to the head. My best drive was actually a slight drop-kick which tells me this head spins way too much for me, it's geared more towards people who want maximum forgiveness. The rest of the clubs performed better for me.

A custom wedge at Cleveland Srixon XXIO headquarters that I was tempted to steal:

The round that was included with the trip was at Pelican Hill which was very impressive. The combined value of the handful of valet parking spaces in front of the clubhouse was in the millions, and my entire clubhouse would have fit in the grill room where we ate lunch. Some views:

(I made that birdie putt from the fringe. The putter is by far my favorite club of the ones we received).

And then four of us drove down towards San Diego yesterday:

There was an event taking place on the South course so we could only play the North but it was spectacular. The greens at Pelican were very slow but they have just redone the ones at Torrey North and they were very firm and very fast. I loved it and made several long putts. Shot an 82 which I'm very happy with.

time for some porn and scorecards, kids!

The joys of hitting into the wind vs. with it. Take a look at my tee clubs on Carnegie #15 on two different days. That's not a mistake. I'm dramatically reducing 3-putts and I'm very happy about that. Overall was pretty good off the tee. Carnegie is a very thin course so a lot of left and right 'misses' off the tee were just into the first cut and really not that bad to deal with. Their greens are rock loving hard and putt fast as all hell. It is super easy to burn a putt by the hole when you think you gave it decent pace.

I had a brutal start to Castle Stuart today but rebounded really well on the front 9 and barely missed a few 1-putts that would have helped even more. Wind and rain picked up pretty well on the back but all in all I was very happy with things. My 54 and 58 degree lobs were spinning like all hell, and I was able to check up a number of lobs and pitches with them so I couldn't complain. Weather got to its worst on 18 and I was all over the hole, but finished up below 90 for the first time here so I'm not about to bitch about it.

One more day of it tomorrow. :toot:

Oh hey thanks Golfnow for calling me on a friday at 3:45 to tell me you hosed up my reservation that I made Monday at 7:30 for tomorrow and I don't actually have a tee time.

gently caress YOU.

Supposed to play The Ritz Carlton tomorrow in Orlando and they call and say whoops we hosed something up the earliest we can get you out is 11:40.

Yeah if I wanted to play at 11:40 I would've loving booked 11:40.

drat near impossible to find an early tee time on a friday afternoon now at a good course.

I guarantee what happened is a guest at the resort wanted to play tomorrow morning and they looked at the golfnow booking and said gently caress them and cancelled it.

This has kinda happened to me before. GolfNow advertises times that are sometimes not available at the course, but GN never calls to verify, and the course rarely checks ahead of time. MOST of the time, the course just grumbles about it to me (as if I'm the problem) and lets me go off as close to that time as possible. The one time that the course stood firm, I showed them I had pre-paid, and they issued me a full rain check, and then I called GolfNow to bitch about it and they comped me a hot deal round for the price.

I could understand if I booked the time yesterday or today, but I booked that poo poo at the beginning of the week when the courses whole schedule was open. It wasn't like this was a hot deal time either, regular morning tee time on a saturday.

I had a lesson this morning, followed immediately by the lowest round I have shot in 5 years. Feels good man. When I took a 2 year Hiatus, I apparently forgot that I have something called a lower body and that it is the base of your swing. The pro's analogy for the proper motion and weight transfer was spot on. He likened it to throwing a baseball sidearm. Immediate 1.5 clubs of distance with 1/4 the effort. :)

Too right. During lessons I'd hit what I thought was a great shot and the pro teaching me shows the DTL recording and it's all upper body. The hips would turn through AFTER the impact making it look real nice. All just for show haha.

Correct transition process now is get to the top of the swing (pretty much spot on back swing at the moment so that's easy) and then hold that position while the hips and back foot turn and push forward. That movement is what starts the turning of the upper body - not the shoulders or arms. Then I have to imagine pushing my body through and past a wall.

I remembered the most important rule of scrambles yesterday... turn your card in last. -9 was the lowest round turned in, the two last groups out both came up with -10, and then I turned in our -13 for the win. We won two of the five skins too so it was basically a free round, can't beat that.

The last two years my team has taken second place in this same tournament because a construction company team always finished after everyone else and somehow managed to beat us by a stroke or two. Not this time!
