Okay so we've talked about the first signs of getting lovely in general being in season 9, but what's the lowest? Like above with the Lena Dunham? Before that? Like when did it become unwatchable? I'm going with like...season 13

The 12th Treehouse of Horror was the first one that was completely humorless and dull with no funny or creative segments. It had the infamous dolphin bit that had literally no jokes and just wouldn't end. While I'm sure the Halloween specials have only declined further into the garbage chute from there, it was the last time I bothered with new Simpsons episodes and that was already after I was giving up on the series.

This was a THOH, but still, yeah, it's awful. Every THOH since like 1999 has been pretty awful though. They clearly just churn them out to not break tradition.

A year or two ago they did their first ever non-THOH Halloween episode, and it was surprisingly good. If you want to see a modern episode that isn't total trash, I'd recommend that. Whatever it was called.

Looking through Wikipedia, Season 14 is the first one where I literally remember seeing all the episodes and never laughing once. There are individual moments in Season 13 that I remember laughing at when I saw them.

"I hate them SO MUCH!"

13 is definitely the answer. The only halfway decent episode in Season 13 is Weekend at Burnsie's. Every other episode is awful, with some of the lowlights of the series, like the one where Bart and Homer are tied together and the one where they get framed for murder. Season 13 marked the departure of Mike Scully as showrunner, with Al Jean replacing him. Jean is still the showrunner today, so there probably won't be any chance of recovery unless someone replaces him.

it's a treehouse of horror segment that doesn't really go anywhere or have a lot of jokes

we must also remember that kang and kodos are canon members of the cast now, beyond thoh eps, because in a season 26 episode the simpson family goes on a disguised ride in "diz nee land" to rigel vii to be eaten, but homer's butt is so toxic that the alien queen dies from eating it and they are sent back to earth.

i must remind you all again that death would be a mercy, for the simpsons

I don't even know what season or episode this was, but I gave up on the show after some bullshit episode where Bart gets chased by an angry dog and then makes friends with a cowboy who ends up being a drunk loser or something. Not a single laugh, and it felt so painfully phoned in and sad. This was at least 10+ years ago.

This was me too. I remember it was my freshmen year of college and I'd slowly fallen out with the show, then I caught that episode and I knew the Simpsons I loved growing up was gone

the only thing i'll say to defend this is that Diz Nee Land is a joke from waaaaaaaay back in season 2, when grampa goes on a date with an old woman voiced by one of the golden girls (bea arthur i think?). you can be forgiven for thinking that they came up with it recently though

From what I hear, he'll probably never be replaced because he's good at making sure the show gets made on schedule and under budget, and that's all Fox cares about at this point.

Be careful for what you wish for.

I stop watching the Simpson around the 2000s. I even found the episode title that made me stop : Kill the Alligator and Run. loving hated it. I check a few clip and holy poo poo, when are they changing the VO cast i.e. the VO for bart is way past her prime. ( I know that`s the only condition that the show will be cancelled if it happens).

I think(/hope) they're supposed to be awful? Because all Krusty's marketing poo poo is always awful?
Like an extremely tone-deaf and moronic evil marketing version of how the African version of Sesame Street had a muppet child orphan with HIV?

--------
Just read the episode full summary. Doesn't clarify. And I'm sure not gonna watch it myself. But I did learn this:

In the UK, the Itchem and Scratchem Blow was edited out, due to it being aired before the watershed because of Itchem setting fire to Scratchem's hair then rolling him up into a beach towel and being smoked like a marijuana joint.
