My main gripe with Anarchy's Children (and the pre-order bonus armor) is that it has drastically reduced content after the first armor tier. All the fun stuff is at kevlar; once you hit plated you can no longer use the crucial leather shorts and shirtless option. The Plated and Warden options are not that interesting.

I looked through the series of posts on the first page and couldn't find the answer to this question:

I played through the game when it first came out and am now looking to buy the new expansion. Looking at the store page there's (slightly) over $100 of DLC. What DLC, if any, aside from the new expansion is worth purchasing?

I got the Reinforcement three pack during the last Steam Summer Sale. The coolest one by far is Alien Hunters. The addition of random bosses was a great addition, and the armor loot you get from killing them is fun. Shen's Last Gift includes a well written mission with a great sarcastic HK-47-type character and a fun new multi-role class (not optimized for min/max playing, but fun). Anarchy's Children is completely cosmetic. I found it mostly worthless, but your taste may differ.

Its true, but someone once spinned it as your team starting out as bunch of ragtag misfits and by the time you reach the higher armour tiers you are a more disciplined and organized squad. That makes me okay with.

Yeah it's back up to 25% off now, it dropped to 15% for a few hours for no reason -- saw a few others mention this elsewhere so I know I'm not crazy! I'm in the UK, so maybe it was just a local bout of weirdness and didn't show up in the US?

There is so much going on that Christopher Odd needed something like three videos just to unlock his second region. Also he got a bonus that turns any rookie trained in the GTS into an instant sergeant. Given several ops require sergeants and above to even run, that's a super good bonus to get even without the power boost.

To be fair, Christopher just wanted to show off all the new stuff as quickly as possible and consequently his strategy layer is an outrageous clusterfuck. I don't think the contacts clock is going to slow down all that much when folks are playing optimally.

In the US and it still shows 15% off. There was some fuckery for a bit on GMG where if you weren't logged in it said 5% off. Then you log in and it shows 25% off. Then you click on it to go to cart and it showed 15% off. From what I can tell, it just says 15% off now.

I know I've been posting about how commander is too hard, so here we go again, tips welcome.

I restarted. Last time I played gatekeeper, I couldn't wait for the enemies to get into a good position because they weren't loving moving. This time they were! I got past with one injury and no deaths. Unfortunately the rest of my playthrough didn't go so great. (I didn't play the tutorial, which I think is 'the best way to do it? IDK?): Each mission I played I'd get a promotion and around one death and 2 people injured for 20 days, and the other guy injured for 10 days or so. I had to buy lots of rookies. I never got another engineer (next time I'll pick missions to get engineers earlier).

I built a guerilla training center, then a power station, then a proving ground. I am now building a workshop in the 2nd level middle, because I have no engineers and can't buy the weapon upgrades (who knew, they need 2 engineers?). I am like 3 months in and have hardly built anything. I absolutely need to build a resistance radio next, then probably another power station, and THEN an advanced warfare center. This is a bit of a shitshow. At least I was able to buy squad size 1! That helped dramatically.

After I got the first armor upgrade I raided a blacksite. I had rank-2 soldier and the rest were sergeants. I can't help but think that it would have gone a ton better if I had a better squad at this point, if everyone was just one rank up. As it was I only lost my best soldier, but everyone else was wounded or gravely wounded. My next mission is a 'moderate' monthly choose-your-mission event. I ignored the things they prevent (the worst is 'advances the timer by 2 weeks) and went for the one that gives an engineer. I suspect I should have done this the first time!

I've put off the viper mission and shen's last gift. I feel like I just can't deal with any of that stuff right now, I'm already struggling. I think I'm learning from this, and it's a LOT more fun than too-easy veteran was.

Amazon tries to honor the price you got it for barring extreme circumstances, yeah. It was only up for a small amount of time and it's for a relatively niche product, it's not big enough to warrant going "ok we'll cancel your pre-order because otherwise we would be taking major losses on this" like they've done for far more major fuckups like accidentally selling consoles for $10 for a day or so.

You sound like you're still learning but doing good. I just have one question: you say you got armor, did you get guns as well? You get a lot more bang for your bug prioritizing guns over armor. Armor lets your dudes take more hits, guns let you kill faster so there's less hits for your dudes to take.

If you decide to scrap this campaign, make sure you get mag weapons over armor (as much of a MASSIVE QoL upgrade that having two item slots is).

Have you researched Mag Weapons yet? One of the things about doing well in the higher difficulties that is quite counter-intuitive is to not rush the story missions unless you need to bump down the AVATAR project timer.

Engineers in the early game are incredible boons to your cause. They can keep clearing debris for additional funds and resources and staff specific facilities to provide some very useful boosts (Such as staffing the Advanced War Center to reduce healing time by 50%).

Make sure you work your way up to getting I believe a Lieutenant and then a Captain to research the squad size upgrades as soon as you can get them. Another upgrade from the Guerrilla Tactics Center that pays real dividends the earlier you get it is both "Wet Work" and "Vulture." WW will increase the exp gained from kills and Vulture will make it so when loot is dropped you'll get +1 item to the drop and considering how valuable Elerium Cores are, this is very useful.

Additionally, just keep playing on Commander! The game really reveals deeper layers of strategy as you keep going and the curve is at a nice place where just when you're catching up in parity, they'll introduce Mutons or some other enemy type to shake things up.

Good luck!

The Doom Clock only cares about being all the way filled -- while if you're confident i.e. six-man squad w/ tier 2 weapons and armor, it makes sense to raid a blacksite to retard the Avatar progress, but otherwise, ignore it till you hit the top.

It's all about 'what if,' right? What if my shot doesn't one-hit the Codex? Well, flashbang it first, and it can't do anything too scary too you. What if my regular soldier can't finish off an Ayy in time? Well, we have a Lightning Hands sniper to take a free shot, or even a guaranteed one with the Shadowcaster. Lock down the enemies, and it doesn't matter if they're not dead, if they can't respond to your attack.

I got mag weapons first but I only have, if I recall correctly, the rifles and pistols. You literally can't buy the upgrade for sniper/assault/heavy if you don't have the cash AND two engineers. I have one (lol).

Yeah as I said before I played 1 a few times (finishing it ) iron man classic. I've been playing 2 on veteran but it got too easy. I'm trying to rank up for the second squad size upgrade but it'll take a while. They've introduced mutons already, who really suck.

I think I need to optimize my strategic layer play. I might end up restarting if this death spirals, which it might do soon since I'm nowhere close to building a resistance radio and the next site is 3 jumps away. I've definitely learned from this game. On veteran it always threw engineers at me and I never had to consider them. Now I've had only one eng for 3 months and I feel like I'm far behind. Not being able to build the resistance radio means I can't up my monthly supply bonus. I also left the proving ground idle, not remembering/realising that I could build stuff for 'free', using only elerium cores. I also could have built a war and spider suit, (I thought they cost money) but I didn't do that which probably caused some deaths. I have 2 ammos building now, and then a war and spider suit.

I think at some point I spaced out (what can I say, it as the weekend) and was not clearing any rooms. I had a room set to excavate but no engineer assigned. Live and learn! I know it's 'normal' to need to restart once or twice, I'll see how it goes.

edit: about restarting, the reason I mention it is because on the blacksite mission I thought: "man, there are so many enemies here. If All of my guys were 1 more rank up I would probably be able to deal with them a little better" e.g. having a lightning hands guy instead of not having a guy at all, or having a better squad instead of (what I brought) 2 grenadiers, 2 specialists and one squaddie ranger. This is because my guys carried on dying and being stuck in medbay.

Also YouSpoonyBard, I didn't quote you but I read it. Yeah I *really* need an AWC but I also need a resistance radio. In order to have both I may need another power plant, which I have left a space for thankfully, below my existing one. My current base is:
proving grounds | guerilla training center | power
debris | building workshop because god, only 1 engineer sucks | debris

I think I really hosed up with my base/engineers + my guys dying too much in missions. And having a better base would probably have lead to fewer deaths in the past + faster healing, so more of the high ranked guys in each mission.

next time:
-engineers are so loving important
-do not make it so that you need a workshop at all (I normally don't build one ever but I needed one this time)
-better build order, not sure what.
-better tactical play, people dying is really bad!

It modifies the base campaign, but should not affect existing saves. You will need to start a new campaign for the new stuff to take effect. It works the same way Enemy Within worked.

I assume.

Go into one of your saves in the base and click on a soldier in the barracks or on the memorial wall. There's an option in customization to add them to the pool.

Some odd things in ChristopherOdd #15:

1) You can't expand from Asia to Indonesia? You gotta go from Asia -> North America -> South America -> Australia -> Indonesia. I don't remember if the base game is the same, but that's loving stupid.

2) Reapers get an ability called Silent Killer which stops the increased chance per kill with their Rifle... but only their basic rifle. Once you upgrade your guns the ability stops working. I really hope that's a bug and it's fixed for release, because abilities should not be tied to a specific tier of weapon.

The expansion pack trashes at least one original mechanic from the vanilla game (resistance HQ) in favour of its own (faction HQs), I would be really surprised if any sort of vanilla game in progress could be transferred to the expansion pack.

He took a non-kill shot beforehand, which meant that Silent Killer only stopped the increase from 50% to 80%, not the initial 0% to 50% chance. (So actual bug is that the UI should indicate the different chances depending on when it's a kill shot or not when applicable.)

Cover is incredibly important. Always try to have your dudes in High Cover if possible.

Don't move your dudes wildly into the fog, especially after you break concealment you risk activating other pods. Move with your first unit or two into unknown territory and try to avoid using your last move to dash or move into FOW.

Don't rush story missions unless the Avatar timer is getting too full. If it is, they'll knock progress off of it, but they have a certain baseline difficulty so you probably want better gear and larger squad size first.

On that note, get the larger squad size perks ASAP. You need soldiers of a certain level and can buy them in the Guerrilla Tactics School.

The AWC can be staffed to reduce the time your soldiers spend wounded which is a helpful use for any excess engineers.

Go for some extra engineers early on. They can clear slots in your base (which gets you resources) and you require a certain number to build upgraded equipment.

Don't sell all your Trooper corpses on the black market, you need them for armor upgrades.

Build as many relays on a continent as their are dots to unlock the powerful continent bonus perks (randomized every game).

Use weapon mods, when you upgrade your weapons they'll upgrade with it (ie. if you attach a SCOPE to a Rifle when you buy Magnetic rifles your SCOPEd Rifle will become a Magnetic one),

The game cheats in your favor on every difficulty below the highest.

Have fun :)
