Hodgepodge posted:This season is amazing and hilarious, but very dark. The joke is basically "Rick is an abusive person due to alcoholism, and probably borderline personality disorder, and Jerry is getting divorced because he's a spineless wimp." When you consider that both are stand-ins for Dan Harmon and represent aspects of his self-image, it's pretty depressing. Dan's in a happy relationship now and receiving therapy from a head-shrinker. He's doing pretty well, as far as I can see. (This, of course, assumes that he's not hiding anything on Harmontown.)

Yeah, the "monologues" are important for dummies like me that have trouble getting what the narrative implies indirectly.

Just because there are an infinite number of universe doesn't mean that they are all equally reachable. I always pictured it as like a bell curve, with "Percent Rick" along the x-axis, and universe number along the y. Or maybe it's a 3 (or more) dimensional curve, I dunno, it doesn't really matter. So the Rickest Rick is right in the middle, and either way you go the next Rick, no matter how close, isn't quite as high. Then at the far ends you have guys like Doofus Rick, Morty Rick, etc, who are drastically different, yet still technically Rick. Avasculous posted:I was wondering if Harmon or Roiland had ever commented on the line: I guess that makes sense, given that the quote is "Of all the Ricks in the Central Finite Curve..." We can still have both, the Rick-curve just needs a different name.

Bust Rodd posted:I think what your experiencing is watching a show where in Seasons 1-2 the characters very rarely talked to each other for longer than it took to Quip or Snipe, but now in Season 3 you are getting scenes where the characters are decidedly done ignoring all the toxic bullshit they put each other through and need to say something about it. These are all conversations that have been bubbling under the surface and are finally coming to a head. I think the reason these come off as abarasive is because they aren't nice things to say or to hear, and it can be disconcerting to have your funny TV inkblot eye people talking about their feelings if nihilism and existential dread and longing and abandonment, but do you really want a 3rd round of "Sad thing happens while sad song about pain plays slowly, credits"?. I think the issue is letting all the nihilism take center stage. Earlier seasons would let the cynical "nothing matters, life is hosed" attitude leak out a bit, but there'd always be wacky aliens or goop monsters or some other silly thing. Only a few episodes did the "slow walk away from a sad song" thing, which is why people remember them. I mean, Morty growing up and realizing he's the only responsible one left is not a bad character arc, but what're they going to do for season 4? And is every episode from now on going to have to be entirely about dealing with crushing depression?

One detail I liked was that Groupon's resistance group appeared to have an alien of a different race among them. Like, he's not the same as Groupon's people, so what's he doing there? Is he there out of duty? Friendship? Is he just a dirty mercenary? Anyway, Rick killed him with a coat bomb.

Earlier seasons would let the cynical "nothing matters, life is hosed" attitude leak out a bit, but there'd always be wacky aliens or goop monsters or some other silly thing. I think it was the first two seasons that were all about nihilism (and wacky aliens). "Nothing matters, just sit down to watch some TV with me" was basically the message of the first two seasons. This season fells more like "Nothing matters, but we are here anyway and we feel these lovely feelings and we can't keep pretending they don't exist so let's just talk about them for once and see what happens." So I disagree that Harmon turned some knob the other way, it's just that you can't talk about nihilism the same way forever, and some ways of talking about it can't be expressed in small, sarcastic quips that can be neatly printed in t-shirts under an image of Cartoon Science Man Who Is Smarter Than You. e: Though I absolutely agree with you that I have no idea what they are going to do with the characters next season.

I work in insurance and one of my first thoughts in that scene was how fuuuuuuuucked that resort was. Groupon should have been thanking Rick that he wasn't the liable party for all those fatalities at a venue that probably explicitly uses immortality as an advertisement.

It's really a miracle that all the innocent deaths and destruction weren't directly Rick's fault this go around. OzzyManReviews Voice: I reckon the theme of the episode is forgiveness. Jerry forgiving Rick, Rick forgiving Jerry, Summer forgiving her mother, Morty not forgiving Ethan for wrecking up his Vay-K; but most importantly, Risotto Groupon who couldn't forgive Big Dick Rick. All those innocent rich fucks got killed cause one prick just couldn't move on past his own YouTube drama. In the end, Rick, Jerry, and 'Sotto walked a cosmos in each other's shoes but Rick realized that nah yeah, forgiveness is good and everything but at this point you're just gonna try to start poo poo again.
