I don't think they really care if they're successful in any real sense (they want people to like their show of course but that's not the same thing). They're both fairly well off staff writers, I don't think they're interested in making something good rather than something they can fiddle fart around with and spend time together each week.

I don't even get it, do you hate listen to the show every single week or just tell us all about how you hate it every single week?

If there was a show that was just PFT, Maria Blasucci, and Amanda Lund chatting for an hour every week I'd be into it. They are really amusing on Spontaneanation this week.

It was so fun, but I was totally lost by the end, just like happened in a lot of the earlier Spont episodes; just way too convoluted and all over the place for someone who isn't giving it 100% of their attention.

I kinda feel like that about Complete Man/Woman/Joy too, but that's a different beast.

That's a problem I have with that podcast in general too. I adore PFT, but the long form improv at the end of Spont can be kind of exhausting to keep up with, and pretty much impossible if you're someone with a short commute who listens to podcasts a few minutes at a time. I decided a while ago I was just going to listen to the first half, but I ended up just skipping it for CBB and Hollywood Handbook instead since I don't have that much podcast time anyway.

That's funny, spont lost me when they cut the improv down to like fifteen minutes. I really enjoyed how insane the longer ones got, especially science fair and miami...and anything else with blasucc

See, your 2nd point was my thing with Spont. There are a small handful of people that are absolutely excellent on the show, like Blasucc, Amanda Lund, Little Janet Varney, Colleen Smi, etc... and there was no consistency to the genuinely good people appearing. I listened for the first time in about a month this week because of Blasucc and Lund, and I don't think I've laughed as hard at anything in the show as at the conversation about dreams, and the improv itself wasn't bad, but probably could've used a 4th. Spont's still one of my top podcasts, but it falls back in priority now that I don't have a free hour every day to dedicate to them.

The original series was really fun, aside from the few episodes with oddly disinterested or combative guests.

Yeah, the two episodes with the two women who absolutely hated James Bond and reviewed GoldenEye and... Casino Royale, I think, were unlistenable. But other than that, I enjoyed all of the original one.

I haven't listened to the new one yet, but I assume the format is completely different - they're not just re-reviewing each movie with a new guest, right?

Yes and no - they're alternating episodes revisiting the movies with one-offs. So far they've done a Roger Moore memorial special and one about their dream James Bond theme park. Also I believe they're just choosing which movies to watch in whatever order they want, rather than doing the back-and-forth chronological order they did for the original series.

I started by listening to a few guests I was particularly interested in, since I didn't know if I wanted to listen to over a hundred episodes at the time, but I went back and started at the beginning after I knew I liked it. I really don't think it's a great show for binge listening though, so it's going to take me forever to listen through the whole series in order. Some of the best guests weren't people you'd expect though; Sinbad was loving awesome.

Yes, start with Reality Show Show.

It's definitely worth listening through, it's grown and changed in weird ways over time. The earliest Hollywood Handbook is mostly "Guests do not understand/do not want to play along with the gimmick," but by #11 with Jake Fogelnest it finds its (first) groove.

of course the tom sharpling saga is its own self contained tale of funny. the grease knows eggs show is not one of my favorites because sean is the true genius, but tom 1 -> tom 2 -> grease knows eggs -> handbook east -> big apple bible is a wonderful arc

I have a soft spot for guests who aren't quite sure what's going on but roll with it anyway and end up having a good time. Sometimes if the guest is super over the top smarmy with them it ends up being a bit too much for me.

The clip show episode they did is pretty good as a starter.

I'd also recommend hopping on with Jordan Morris or Sinbad. IMO they're some of the illustrative eps of that era of the show. Shelby Fero or Aubrey Plaza are also great along those lines

i feel like there have been a lot of guests that came in and just tried to do "oh ok i'm a hollywood guy here's lovely hollywood things" then the realize that's not what is gonna happen. what is gonna happen is that sean and hayes are gonna be crazy passive aggressive assholes.

but dave thomas and sinbad really did have the status to do their own things with it. both great eps.
