We don't need to have that dialogue because it's obvious, trivial, and has already been had a thousand times.
Someone mentioned awhile back that achievements link into steam progression systems somehow. There's a rationale behind it somewhere .

yeah i almost fell into the achievement trap with stupid ubisoft completion achievements in mad max and then realized 'wait, i don't want to do this at all' and just beat the game instead

i can still be tricked by stupid rewards, like MMOs that give you little cosmetic pets that don't do a drat thing - i will definitely do some dumb poo poo to get a little pal, even if he does nothing. but im very grateful that im not obsessed with platinum trophies, or for that matter care so much about cosmetic rewards that i'll pay real $ for them

Achievement traps are the worst, because you have a small voice in the back of your head that is pushing you to compete the stupid game, but you can't because it's so loving terrible.

Then I need to restart my Assassin's Creed 3 file to get past that completion glitch...

Then I can start on AC Unity....

Then I have a backlog of three LEGO games..

Then Far Cry 4...

Well, then I stand quite corrected.

Back when the first AssCreed came out I rented it via Gamefly for the 360 and did all the flag collecting poo poo for the achievement. Well, almost. I did all but something like three of them before saying, "Well this is just a drat waste of my time collecting a bunch of poo poo for a stupid achievement!" I have since realized I should have had come to that conclusion after finishing it.

But, again, that had gamerscore associated with it. I literally have no idea why these 9000 achievement games are a thing.

It's just because the devs are dumb and think more achievements are better achievements.

The only game I'm intending on going 100% on any time soon is the Crash Bandicoot trilogy and that's only because what remains of my inner child demands it.

To make it even worse, when AC1 eventually came to PS3 trophies didn't exist yet so those flags did literally nothing.

So I finally encountered one of those lovely thousands of achievements games in the wild: Viewpoints, which I won in a SteamGifts giveaway.

It's even shadier than I was expecting because the way that it works is that it has a timer counting down from 2:30:00 and when it reaches zero (which is comfortably past the two hour cutoff for losing refundability) then a little button pops up and clicking it makes you get all ~8000 achievements at once.

The same is true on the Steam version, all collecting flags does is increment one of your progress counts on your pause screen - the game has no Steam achievements. About the best that can be said about collecting flags is doing so saves your game, so that can be useful. I don't think there are even any unlocks tied to getting them all.

The scuttlebutt I heard is that the dev team was forced to put a collectible in by Ubisoft, and hated doing so, so they did it in an amazingly :effort: way and called it a day.

No idea. They were both developed by Ubisoft Montreal, but it's a 3,000 member subsidary that's seen some notable staff changes over the years.

Granted, hatred for having to pick up flags is something anybody could develop by playing any Assassin's Creed game (and I say that as somebody who enjoys them for the most part).

I admit I do the whole collect-a-thon thing but I'm not some super-goon who will have a panic attack if I can't find the final flag or whatever. I just roam the world to chill and pick up poo poo that's on the map. I'm playing Black Flag right now and just cruising the Caribbean is a great way to relax after work.

Now I'm curious how the Steam refund cutoff has affected the design of regular games. It seems like something the pencil-pushers would be intensely concerned with.

A lot of the later games gave you tools to make the collectathons easier, made them less of a pain, and actually rewarded you for them.

They're still pretty dumb but they're at least functional now. (And yeah, I have like 80 hours in ACIV for a reason.)
