Nu-Pennywise was nowhere near as lame as the publicity stills made him look. He's obviously not as good as Tim Curry, but nobody could've been. Everything else is an improvement.

Between the ending change in this movie and the potential in the second movie, this feels like the closest thing we'll ever get to that unused Peter Jackson script Nightmare on Elm Street 6: The Dream Lover. Bunch of kids start kicking the crap out of a demon who no longer holds any power over them, he gets his mojo back over time, comes back worse than ever and it culminates in a final battle where the town gets torn apart.

(the overarching metanarrative of King's obsessions is almost as interesting as the books themselves).

I enjoyed the movie. No sequence was really all that scary but the film was engrossing. I think the best part was the house or the projector. They were the most thrilling scenes. I will say I hope they cast somewhat unknowns for the sequel. I think everybody on the planet is wishcasting Amy Adams for Bev.

Just got back from seeing it. I really liked how "wrong" IT could look. Especially when it showed Bev the deadlights. One of the most captivating lines in the book was at the beginning when Georgie died. It grabbed his arm, and then it's face changed in a way that utterly destroyed his sanity. It may have been my imagination, but at the end when he's peering over the well at the Losers before he "dies" I could have sworn you could see something behind the Pennywise form puppeting it just like he did with Georgie in the basement.

I was really pleasantly surprised by this, I had liked the trailer but everything about Pennywise felt off/trying too hard. I vaguely recall from the book that Pennywise appears when he takes Beverly to a double-feature, taking on the form of the Wolf-Man or the Mummy (or both?) but he convinces himself it was a dream and refuses to accept that it actually happened even when everybody else admits to being menaced by the clown? Towards the end of the movie we see Pennywise start to take on Wolf-Man/Mummy like features and it felt like a callback to something we hadn't actually seen, perhaps a filmed scene that got cut for time?

Thoughts after just coming out of the movie: very good. Pennywise stands very well apart from the 90s version, which is the result of a good performance and effects work. Really get the idea that he's an alien wearing a clown skin. The kids are great and some moments really had me raising eyebrows at how brutal they were. I did think the movie was often literally too dark, as in I couldn't see what the director probably wanted me to see. That and the sometimes frantic camerawork didn't help. The overall changes didn't bug me. I thought Richie was a bit too crude for a while until I considered that's how a kid would have to talk in the 80s to earn the Trashmouth name. Bev getting kidnapped to unite the gang didn't incense me, but it was kind of cheesy and unworthy of the film. While it was used to illustrate that It doesn't feed unless his prey is terrified, I felt like that was kind of a copout - part of the horror is that when It gets you, you're dead. The good thing about those changes is that it made me doubtful a few times, like I legit thought Stan was going to die. As long as the movie was, I wish it was a lot longer. Could've used more time with Ben, Mike, and Henry, I felt. I hope there's a lot of deleted material we may see. Don't think there's much new flashback material for the sequel, because the narrative never felt interrupted. I didn't like literally floating kids - I don't know if they were supposed to be dead, or just deadlighted like Bev, but I like the bleak, hopeless revenge horror of It better than the idea they're saving the kids. And the final confrontation contained again too frantic CG, taking away the visceral violence they were going for. In short: some beefs, but overall a great take on the book. Oh also, I'm curious if the Losers' roles will be mixed up for the sequel, like Bill seems like he could become the architect, Ben the historian who stays behind. It made me wonder if King ever considered having Bill kill himself instead of Stan, and have the Losers have to fight It without their Leader.

I rewatched the mini-series and noticed something pretty neat. When the group goes to track down IT in the sewers, it tries to destroy their minds by showing them the Deadlights which appear above them. When we reach the end of Part Two, IT transforms into a giant spider which has the Deadlights housed in its stomach. So did IT briefly become the spider and stand above the kids when it was dealing with them in Part One and we just didn't get to see it because of the blinding light? If so, that was some cool foreshadowing! What a shame the spider itself looked so wonky...

if i remember correctly, in the book they fight it as its true form (true in the sense of our physical reality) as kids but because of the structure of the book it's revealed at the same time for both the kids and the adults.

I really haven't been scared of a film since I was 11, when I saw Signs. Greys creep me out. It's a shame there hasn't been a good UFO Alien film in a long time. I keep hoping but that poo poo never delivers.

Is the adult part of the IT book as good as the kid part? Because the second half of the IT miniseries is definitely a drop in quality from the first half. Asking in terms of expectations for the sequel to this movie.

It almost feels like they'll have to make Ben the lighthouse keeper as it would hardly make sense for it to be mike now, which is going to be sad as Ben had my favorite 'call from mike' at the beginning of the book (I could argue Bev's was better, what with kicking this poo poo out of Tom, but the whole thing was also a bit too real and brutal for me to enjoy reading that part like I can Ben's numb fear). I would have really preferred, since they changed Mike's backstory to be his parents dying in a fire, to have him become obsessed because of circumstances around their death of the strange history about the town to the point where he has newspaper clippings all over his walls. It really all seems like that would have been a better fit as well as giving mike something to do. They would have had to give Ben something to do then, but, heck make the movie 10 minutes longer and throw in some stuff about building the dam, or making the silver slugs. In the book it all happens at the same time, there really isn't a first half/second half like the mini series or this film (after part 2 comes I reaaaaallly look forward to a fan edit of the 2 parts into one). The adult parts are definitely better in the book though, at least more happens. Bev's husband is tracking her down, the encounters they have are mostly a lot more involved, though a couple are like the mini series, Henry's attacks are more detailed and brutal, and theres a nice urgency to everything, they don't have time to gently caress around visiting the hospital and talking about their plans once everything kicks back into gear. I think from what I've heard part 2 will also have a lot of the back story to the town that couldn't make it in the first film like the murder of the bradly gang in the 30's and the black spot fire. I think for part 2 will probably be something like this (contains book spoilers): Act One: the phone calls, Stan's suicide, update on Henry Bowers Act Two: the losers reunite, new individual scares (witch, ball game, etc), Bowers attacks Act three: final battle with It, and the destruction of Derry They should do some historical flashbacks as well, to really set up why Derry must be destroyed.

To agree with almost everyone... Giant It and the slideshow scene was really good! I also thought that the new Pennywise would be bad, but he was actually pretty good. I liked how weird his voice and speech patterns were.
