I get the Wolf brand stuff, which is apparently garbo but mom always cooked with it, so it tastes like mom's chili. Add some extra chili powder, this Mexican protein stuff I buy at the store, tomatoes, jalapenos, and crushed saltine crackers... Mmm mmm.

If I'm not making it, the only kind I'll get are Texas Chili Company (not in a can, it's in the meat cooler section near hot dogs or whatever) or HEB brand. Get the gently caress outta here with that Wolf or Hormel trash with its dog-food level quality of meat.

Wolf is originally from Corsicana I will remind you as I grew up eating this in Texas from mom's recipe, for I am a native Texan yessiree bob. And there's nothing like a steaming bowl of chili of the kind your own mother made you to remind you of the good times when you were growing up and playing with the dog and swatting june bugs during a fall evening.

Who knows. Dems have been outperforming HRC in special local elections since November and flipping state house seats. So if the GOP is demoralized after feeling betrayed/embarrassed/ashamed of Trump, and the supposed massive Latino voting base that's been scheduled to arrive since forever turns out to vote for someone they can trust to represent their interests, and also the Hispanic voting bloc remains as mad about SB 4 as they were in June...anything could happen.

BUT I wouldn't put money on it.

Doesn't Beto have that Senate nomination all but wrapped up? Or does my Facebook feed just have an inordinate amount of Beto supporters?

"All but wrapped up" in the sense that he's the only serious candidate. Castro could completely upend it if he wanted to.

I think Castro's alien looks would be a big burden against anyone but Cruz. In that race he's merely throwing away an advantage any other human-looking candidate would have.

This is broader than just Texas, but Democrats seem to care too much about celebrity and popularity, which is why, imo, they turn out way better for presidential years than midterms. My sense is that Dems want to see politics as a grand enterprise led by heroic and moral people rather than the hard, mind-numbingly boring and difficult thing it is.

There wasn't really any serious movements to take down confederate statues in Texas during the election. Even among the Black Lives Matter crowd it wasn't a particularly high priority. After Trump got elected, though, taking down statues kinda became a way for local politicians in anti-Trump cities to score points (and even then that was mostly outside of Texas).

Then Charlottesville happened, and suddenly you started to see a lot of the removals (like the one at UT) happening because various city councils and school administrators didn't want a bunch of white supremacists to show up to try and "defend" the statues in their park/campus.

Yep. Mayors are terrified of the tiki torches. Texas cities in particular have long looked at other parts of the South going up in flames and :yikes: before moving to quietly bury their own demons before the Bad Things that happened Over There happen here.

This is not necessarily out of the goodness in the hearts of city elites, and there is a cost to burying one's demons as opposed to really dealing with them (segregation, poverty). It's more out of a sense of self-preservation and also to avoid the kind of unrest which would scare away business, because Texas cities are all about business.

I'm also speaking as someone who grew up in DFW which is boosterville par excellence, and which has an obsession with wanting to appear "modern" while also being constantly insecure that it maybe isn't so much. The city has long had it out for the JFK conspiracy theorists who populate Dealey Plaza, and the city officially referred to the semicentennial of the assassination as only "The 50th."

It's totally understandable because they don't want a bunch of Alex Jones motherfuckers screaming at tourists every day, and they don't want the Nazi mobs at the Robert E. Lee statue. But there is a flip-side and the civic culture does try to avoid its past. Also, historical preservation is not a big priority when it comes to buildings.

Capital: A city designated as a legislative seat by the government or some other authority, often the city in which the government is located; otherwise the most important city within a country or a subdivision of it.

I know it was a joke post but holy poo poo a statue of two dudes making out made out of melted down guns confiscated by police departments would be the most hilariously rad "Gay Agenda" statue ever.
