get that OUT of my face posted:there's so much rigging going on in college basketball and the players know it I think we're agreeing here but my point was there's zero reason for the NFL to fix games. If they were, the Cowboys would have played New England last year. The players and the league make too much money to make loving with it worth the effort. The NCAA is rife with corruption though because most of the players are NEVER going pro, are not even allowed to have JOBS, aren't truly there for an education and nobody cares about an Austin Peay v Delaware game in the middle of January except for degenerate gamblers and alumni.

The TV broadcasts for the early Apollo missions, and especially Apollo 12 where the astronauts actually broke the TV cameras, were partially faked by the TV networks so that they'd have SOMETHING to show to the people watching on TV during times when the astronauts weren't broadcasting TV, even though the air to ground voice communication and film photos and 16mm footage was genuine. Bush and Cheney didn't take the threat of Al Qaeda seriously when they came into office, Cheney was focused on Iraq and Hussein as the only major threat to US interests, and Bush was concerned about domestic issues. Bush's reshuffling of the FBI in the wake of the Robert Hanssen scandal very early on in the Bush admin pulled the field agents who had been tracking the hijackers off of surveillance of them, leading to several of them slipping the net.

When I was a kid, a major air disaster happened in my hometown. On December 12th 1985, a charter DC-8 carrying 256 people - most of whom were soldiers in the 101st airborne - crashed just after takeoff, killing everyone onboard. The subsequent investigation created a big scandal, as it was either pig-fuckingly incompetent, or been ordered to bury the whole incident. The soldiers were coming home from Lebenon, that the Americans were helping to invade at the time. Further, the charter company, Arrow Air, was a CIA front company often used to deliver arms to Iran. Regan's lowest point in popularity came with the bombing of the Marine barracks in Beirut some time previously. So, in other words, even if it was just an accident, there's good reason to think Regan panicked a bit when it happened, called up his good buddy Cdn PM Brian Mulroney, and asked him to bury it. I won't go into the investigation, but suffice it to say it was a shambles. FBI bomb specialists made the trip to Gander only to be ordered home before they could begin work. Early circumstantial evidence of an explosion were discounted. The American coroner after the fact said that the flight crew had inhaled a lethal amount of toxic smoke, consistent with a fire/explosion in the cockpit. Similar toxic inhalants were discovered in the passengers, and since they all died on impact, this means they must have been breathing this toxic smoke while still in the air. The DC-8 stopped in Cairo from Beirut, where a bunch of soldiers gear were unloaded, and mysterious boxes were put on-board, along with two unidentified men believed to be government agents. We know later from the Iran Contra scandal that at this time a arms shipment to Iran was cancelled due to some tiff they were having, and it is possible these boxes were munitions - most likely missiles. Cairo security was incredibly lovely as well, so if a bomb was planted this was most likely where it was done. On the morning of the incident somebody called the New York Times and the American embassy in Sweden, claiming responsibility for bomb, and saying it was intended to go off over the ocean - a delay in Cologne where the Airliner also stopped at screwed up the timing. While this means less than you might think, witnesses of the airplanes takeoff report an explosion and flames before the airliner crashed. But the board was having none of it, the cause was ice on the wings Anyway, as I said the investigation was hosed (the chief investigator in it had a two week crash investigation course under his belt, it was his first crash and also his last), and the resulting scandal saw the Canadian board dissolved, and replaced with a new body that is reputedly quite good at its work, though its findings have no legal standing. (This is where the Canadian Fed Apparatchiks would make bank, since obviously favors could be traded to keep lawsuits from happening.) The Board released a minority report saying that it was in fact some explosion that caused the crash. A supreme court justice reviewed the whole mess, and while he said there was not enough evidence to say it was an explosion, he did say that the offical conclusion of the board was bullishit, as the one thing the investigation had managed to do was get enough evidence to say conclusively it was not ice on the wings. The American families of the soldiers managed to make enough noise to get a congressional investigation of the matter, which opened, said "JFC Canada get your poo poo together" and then closed on the same afternoon. I wish I could prove any of this, but unlike in America, crash remains are destroyed once the investigation is done, so there's no way to undo the pig-fuckery. The whole thing is locked in a Schrodinger's box now of uncertainty. Let me go through causes just for completeness: (Note: If you believe the testimony of the eyewitnesses is accurate, then you more or less default to the position of explosive, but research has shown eyewitnesses are surprisingly susceptible to giving false testimony. Not lying, mind you, but people often take cues from the questioner as to what they are looking for and then subconsciously examine events to give the questioner what they want. So eyewitness testimony is not as solid as physical evidence.) In case you were wondering, the cockpit recorder didn't survive the crash, and the crash recorder onboard the DC-8 was a 1950s type, badly maintained. The only useful bit of data it gave was when the aircraft left the runway. Mechanical failure
This was actually ruled out. Gander might be the best place for a airport for 1500 km or so, but it is still a pretty miserable place, where blizzards, snow, rain, etc make Ice on the wings extremely common. The Ground crew and staff at the airport are thus world class experts on the wet-cold problems aircraft can get. They saw no sign of icing on the aircraft. Weather records at the time indicate that the weather was above zero when the DC-8 was there and when it took off. Because the flight was so short, the airplane if it was iced up should have had trouble taking off, and the data conforms this was not a problem.
The aircraft was ropy and tired, so if it was overloaded and something malfunctioned at takeoff, that would put it in a bad spot. One thing the investigation discovered that the outside left engine had its thrust reverser engaged. The investigation was so badly done that nobody tried to ascertain if this was something that happened in flight or something that resulted in the crash. A thrust reverser suddenly coming on at takeoff would be very bad, especially if the plane in question was just on the edge of being able to fly in those conditions. Explosion caused by

There are two possible causes here. If you believe that Iran-Contra munitions were loaded at Cairo, then that could be a possible cause. Another cause could have been the baggage of the soldiers themselves. By the rules, the only munitions soldiers were to take with them on charter flights in the cabin were sidearms IE pistols. At the time though, this had become a not so small scandal, because everybody was ignoring this and taking rifles, grenades, etc into the cabin with them, and packing anything in their luggage. It is possible that some munition that should have not been there could have started a fire/chain reaction among other munitions. This is obviously sort of grasping at straws, but once again, the investigation did not look at this.
