He was indeed. The announcers mentioned that Rockhold wasn't able to train at AKA for this fight because all of his regular training opponents (cain, DC, etc) were injured or busy doing something else so he trained with Hooft and some other people.

Ah that's cool. The Blackzillians 2.0 camp is pretty good and in a better city than loving Boca Raton.

At least they can go to Disneyworld on a day off.

Other than one flurry branch got beat down really. Rockhold hit some nice kicks and a couple check hooks before finishing him

glad Rockhold was able to get in a good camp away from his regular gym and teammates and overcome not being able to get a fight cancelling injury

Shogun is out of the OSP fight with an unknown injury and has been replaced with Yushin Okami, who has mostly been fighting at welterweight for like two years and will now be at 205 on a week's notice

congratulations, everyone, it's a real Japan card

edit: this was posted just before the thread became a GDT and I'm an idiot but I'm leaving it here because it bears repeating

okami vs osp is a loving nightmare fight but thankfully okami is going to be both fat and out of shape and unprepared and small so it might be mercifully brief

I think what's sticking with me the most is a Japanese welterweight fighting the #6 light-heavyweight on a week's notice is still less tragic than the Shogun fight probably would've been

Nah even in his prime Okami was way too slow and small for OSP. Shogun still has quick hands and hits way, way harder than "Thunder."

Yeah, well, Okami can boringly take him down and keep him there maybe.

What? I hoped for a rockhold beatdown but he looked like a pile of extremely slow dog poo poo. Maybe Branch has slicker hands than I give him credit for but Rockhold had zero success (including the ineffectual body kicks) until he brute forced his way into mount. Luke's technique looked as bad as I've ever seen it. He should move up to 205, after last night I could see Bisping winning again and Bobby Knuckles would absolutely maul him.

On the macro level I feel the MMA pendulum is swinging back towards "speed kills."

i agree he looked off a bit, but the body kicks weren't ineffectual and he absolutely hit branch with a couple nice check hooks and one really solid straight left. he almost got knocked out tho lol

Really wished Shogun had juiced. TRT Vitor was insane and it would have been a treat to see Mauricio doing his thing with the assist. I remember posting "Nobody walks through Shogun" right before the snitch did just that.

I mean Branch didn't act like they hurt so I called them ineffectual. Surely if Rockhold landed 5 clean maybe it would have had an impact, but really Rockhold had to step outside his normal gameplan to take out an unheralded guy.

poo poo, maybe I'm being too harsh on him. I thought Cruz looked like rear end beating Mighty Mouse but history proved me wrong on that.

OSP is too big and strong for Okami. Even the gigantic middleweight Okami that walked around at 220 would get easily shoved off.
