that's weird but kinda cool I guess

has any other DQ game favored turn based over round based? I can't think of anything like that in the main series

Sort of. If you set your party to AI commands they'll adjust their actions mid round according to the situation, they won't heal someone who already was topped off earlier for example but they will heal someone who got damaged by the boss earlier that round.

(Probably the biggest reason I keep most of the party AI until late game bosses.)

Both:
- Some items are located in different places
- Both versions have a postgame *main* story

PS4:
- Better Graphics
- Bigger world that requires more exploration, items are typically found by exploring
- Travel by horse
- Bowgun challenge quest
- MAGIC slot machines in the casino (see: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/164514812)
- "Turn" based combat similar to games with ATB type battle systems, but you can't see turn order in advance
- Trophies

3DS:
- Streetpassing features: Yocchi, Retro revisits, additional postgame bosses that aren't part of the story
- "Round" based combat, similar to every other DQ game
- 2D and 3D mode that switch on the fly based on if the last directional input was analog or dpad. Items are found by using this creatively

This is all I can think of.

Edit: the less important things: PS4 has auto-save and 9 slots, whereas 3DS has suspend save and 3 slots. And the ps4 ver is ~9000 yen in Japan whereas the 3DS one is 6000. It'll probably be $60/$40 in North America if following standard trends.

I'll probably play both

Though I'll do PS4 first because if i burn out, I want it to the on the portable version. I've played so many excellent turn based rpgs on the 3DS that I doubt DQ11 3DS will top them (square enix ain't got poo poo on atlus these days, tis the truth)

DQ11 PS4 on the other hand looks downright amazing and much less generic than the portable version just from first impressions

The lack of news on the Switch version at this point is a bit worrying. Hoping it turns out alright since it's hard to go back to the 3ds after getting used to the Switch's screen.

So random questions here, in DQM2(3ds) is there a specific breed that requires a King Godwyn(human)? I stole one from a tamer awhile ago and now I'm hesitant to get rid of it even though I can't find anything that goes with it.

Second question is Joker 3 any good? I've eyeballing a copy on ebay and I'm not sure if should pull the trigger on it.

From what I understand, Joker 3 is the worst of the games. However, the same people say Joker 3: Professional is the best of the games? Not sure how that works, but I don't speak Japanese, so I have to rely on hearsay. Hopefully the team can get past the overflow error roadblock so us plebs can find out. Regarding the purchase, I'm sure people were discussing it here, so you might want to check some of the less recent pages for their dope opinions.

Joker 3 and Joker 3 professional are basically the same game, except the latter has almost literally double the content and some new features.

There are nearly twice as many recruitable/fuseable monsters, including way more unique models. The core monster set involves a lot of pallette color swapped versions that are slightly different stat-wise, however there are few if any such swaps among the 200+ that were added in professional.

Also, the end to the Joker story line is only present in Pro, which actually provides quite a bit of offline content to do. What a lot of English speakers who are interested in the series neglect is that the main appeal of the 3DS monster series is online multiplayer, which means playing the original (especially at this point in time, since most of the player base has moved on to Pro) doesn't have very much to offer. The Pro version even has a feature that lets you skip events up until the end of the first part of the story just by pushing a button, so that you can reach the end of the game and prepare to battle online more quickly.

The online meta was probably best in DQM2, but is more stable in Pro than vanilla 3. I have unfortunately faced cheaters before, but I guess that can always be expected in online games.

Oh, lmao. That'll do it I guess.

As someone who has played 3pro, how does the endgame content compare to Terry's Wonderland? I really loved it, but I found myself struggling to stay interested in grinding out the cool super monster combos (gently caress rainbow eggs). A short time after beating the extra story bit, I only turned it on to do the wifi battles every day (got a sweet rear end Darkonium Slime out of it, tho) and used the chance gate like, twice. I was really hoping the one currently being translated would have a bit more variety in post-game content so I can make a bomb rear end Dracolord or something. That being said, I'd probably have a blast either way. It would just be a little more to look forward to.

FAKE EDIT: also, what's the word on unobtainable monsters? I recall there being some power ranger monsters that were a McDonald's WiFi exclusive or some poo poo, so that kind of bummed me out. It would be pretty cool if you could obtain all the monsters this time around without having to go to Japan on a certain date (that was probably a year ago).

After you've done all 3 scenarios (The main game, The Joker 3 vanilla postgame, and the Joker Pro postgame) you have a number of different super bosses that change daily and power up as you beat them more and more. Eventually you'll be able to recruit them, and they are needed at some point along the fusion trees to create some of the further down the line SS monsters. There are also several other events and sidequests to complete. They even patched some more stuff in with a free general version update back in June? or so, not sure, I had stopped playing at that point due to a busted analog stick. There were some new events added including some new monsters that I had not seen anywhere in the game's data or text while translating stuff, so it's possible they will still add even more with later updates, though it's been a few months now.

As far as exclusives, there were some that required visits to specific locations in Japan during a limited time frame shortly after the release, but they usually eventually throw those monsters into the daily wi-fi gift pool after a certain amount of time. There might be a couple that you'll never be able to get unless you buy the official strategy guides and get a gift code, but in the case of monsters like that, they are usually dead-ends that aren't used in any other fusions to make things fair.

Dragon Quest 7 is the most Dragon Quest game of them all. It's very large and even the remake has a slow pace. It's highly episodic and structured.

I like it, but it's possibly too much for some. It can be exhausting. Its sheer size tends to amplify the weaknesses of the series' model more than the strengths.

You don't need to grind to win, but you will always have an incentive to grind.

DQ VII gets a little more dynamic gameplay-wise once you hit the class system but by seven hours I think the fundamentals have kicked in, it's basically charming vignettes, pun-based monsters, doofy NPCs and weird fetch quests from here on out.

I love this game but I am also the sort of person who hears 'talk to everyone' and '264k word count' in the same sentence and goes Hot drat.

So for now we did decide to drop the patch for the vanilla version of Joker 3 for the sake of getting something that has been stalemated by bugs for most of this year out in time for X-mas. I don't know how playable it is or what bugs remain, and I didn't really proofread any of the final translation stuff since we never really ^finished* the project so to speak. I mostly did names of monsters/items/etc and the descriptions of skills/spells/monsters. It should have 100% of the game in English, but be advised that if you do use the patch, there could potentially be critical game breaking bugs and the quality of the translation might be rough in spots.
