I don't have an ATV and have only used Plex on my FTV on my local network. Can I give a friend of mine with an ATV my plex login and have him enter it into the ATV Plex app and access my server? He doesn't have a server so it won't default to his.

Yeah I think that's the whole point of a Plex login. You can use it from wherever. He may destroy your upstream bandwidth depending on your internet connection, however.

iFixit did a teardown of the Apple TV 4K and gave it an 8/10 for repairability. Only real interesting thing is a new cooling system for the A10X that includes a fan (which was fairly obvious from the holes on the bottom). Points deducted for everything being soldered to the board, but otherwise it's easy to repair with no glue or exotic screws anywhere. https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Apple+TV+4K+Teardown/97511 Endless Mike fucked around with this message at 18:51 on Sep 26, 2017 |

He can use his own account to access your plex server (You need to give him access to the specific categories, movies/tv/etc). There's also the ability to limit upstream bandwidth now so that should help. If your system is powerful enough it should be fine because it can transcode to smaller formats.

I am a PlexPass user so should be all good on that. The rig it's on was built for gaming a few years back so should have no problem transcoding. Glad to hear I can limit the upstream bandwidth AND specify access. I haven't played at ALL with sharing the server with others. Thanks!

fivehead posted:what the gently caress yeah pretty much. The only way to avoid this is to MANUALLY switch the display to 1080pSDR Anyways, curiosity got the best of me and I picked up a 32GB ATV 4K last night and did a comparison between the 4K Bluray and 4K iTunes verions of Transformers: The Last Knight and was very impressed by the picture quality of the digital version. I had a really really hard time noticing the differences except for very minor artifacting in dark scenes and minor judder in some of the action scenes, both which are kind of expected from streaming at 60hz. I manually changed the output to 24hz and it seemed to help a little bit from what I could tell, but also made the menu poo poo. This is a Dolby Vision movie, and I only have a HDR10 set (KS8000); whether or not there is an actual HDR10 encoding being sent with the lack of DV, or its Apples HDR10 "overlay", whatever it is did a good job. The only glaring issue that got me is the lack of HD sound/Atmos in the stream. I have a 5.2.2 setup and Atmos track in this movie is on point right from the opening Parmount graphics. If you only have a 2 channel or 5.1 setup, its still a very good sounding track in Dolby Digital (like all Transformers movies). Great job by Apple with their 4k PQ. The best part of this is being able to purchase somebodies Bluray code for a couple bucks and having a full fledged 4k movie (minus HD sounds) at no extra cost. Big action hits I'll still be purchasing the discs for Atmos, but will definitely be using this for everything else.

It'd be interesting to log data transfer on your router at the start of the movie, and then again at the end to see roughly how big the stream is. Naturally there'll be some error margin, but it's a start.

Naturally there'll be some error margin, but it's a start. There's been a few people over on Bluray.com and AVS forums that are showing 25-30 Mb streams, with up to 35 Mb in certain action scenes. So its actually a step above everyone else's 4k streams.

There's that too, but it's more that the 1080p video on iTMS uses a 'more efficient' codec that ends up looking no better, if not worse, than their 720p video.

yeah I went in with low expectations based off their 1080 GARBAGE. I'm pleasantly surprised and may actually keep this thing, only because its so cheap/easy to get 4k content by buying people's codes.

Well after playing around with this thing for awhile, I think I'm going to return it. Too many nagging issues that are becoming large annoyances in the long run. I have to say though, TV OS is by far the best streaming box interface I've had the pleasure of dealing with, followed by the Shield TV.

The jump from 1080p just doesn't feel like the big of a jump. Maybe it's just me, and I haven't found the right settings yet. Please any advice is welcomed (I have 55 inch version).
