These manzai sequences would be a lot easier if a single mistake didn't ruin the whole thing.

The fact that 4,5 and 6 recycles the plot of previous games respectively just makes me wonder what should they do next that doesn't feel like a dead ringer

4 is 1, except the assassination attempt took more lives, the yen at stake is much bigger and it's a cop instead of a politician who they are dealing with. 5 is 2 all over again, down to Kiryu trying to distance himself from the Yakuza life as the Omi get involved again, the chairman that is dying/dead is actually the evil mastermind and the boss is someone who wants to beat the Dragon of Dojima, bonus points for Kiryu nearly falling for a woman who is related to a rival clan. 6 is 3, Kiryu goes to a new coastal locale and befriends the local no name group of Yakuza as the old man harbors an old secret with military shenanigans as well as a horse tattoo businessman who wants to be a Yakuza

Maybe with Ichiban around this time we will get refreshing new plots. I wouldn't mind seeing them having to fight off non asian criminal syndicates who gives zero fucks about criminal politics and introduce stuff like gun smuggling, drugs and other nastier stuff that would allow the series to have a body count like sleeping dogs where civilians are equal targets as regular Yakuza.

This is the only Yakuza thread I could find and I need some help. Anyone has a good shogi simulator? I have no idea how to play so I'd rather another computer played this weird chess for me

I've changed a lot since I started hanging with Sonic, but I can't depend on him forever. I know I can do this by myself! Okay, Eggman! Bring it on!
you can probably just use any phone app or whatever. shogi isn't that hard to simulate.

for fun load up like a famicom shogi rom or something and see if that can beat it.

edit: actually don't. i want to make a video of that. it's my idea i mailed it to myself so that's legally binding or something.

Protip: The challenges count for the shogi completion list item. You ca just do Challenge 1 five times and get that check mark.

If for some reason you're possessed and want the sword then that's on you.

Okay, so I've moved on to Dead Souls. It's... bizarre. The story is rocketing forward -- I accidentally finished Part 1 before I really wanted to. I have to say, as far as Part 2 goes, Majima's reaction to real zombies showing up is priceless, and it's incredibly fun to run around blasting his shotgun at everything. I'm glad I read the tip about just hammering on R1 most of the time, because it makes shooting bearable. I tend to run past too many zombies, though.

I hope I can finish. I put it on Normal, because that's what I played the others on, and it's a bit difficult because it's super-clunky.

Well they made Binary Domain so I guess they got the message.

I wish we'd get a Binary Domain 2, or at least some kind of good shooting mechanics with a Yakuza game.

It really is amazing. You hear that the Japanese don't really have a lot of shooting games but good god.

And not being able to remap poo poo was the cherry on top.

So I'm playing Kiwami and: While Dragon style is almost completely locked off, is there a reason to use it as opposed to the other styles? I was originally using a bunch of Rush but the punishment for getting hit even once was such that I am now just using Beast all the time and tanking attacks before mashing square, and sometimes using Brawler to get some distance when I'm surrounded. I don't know if there's something else I need to be doing to master the combat.

Sega, no pocket circuit or terrible rock-paper-scissors minigames ever again, thanks in advance. And, for a game that solely revolves around fighting, please stop making some/all of the best moves counters or similar; passive/reactive fighting is garbage.

Say what you will about counters, but the first time I actually felt like the Dragon of Dojima was after unlocking that omnidirectional counter move. Just taking all comers and ending them in one hit.

I felt this as soon as the double finishers unlocked for me, though I wish they didn't require and/or drain Heat like they did in y0. I also recently discovered that you can use throws instead to send enemies flying, that's always fun.

Got through the car chase in Legend difficulty. Whoever thought it was a good idea to make this the only challenging part of the whole playthrough is a bastard, seriously. Your health drains way too fast and if you fail you gotta fight the triad and Lau Ka Long all over again, it's bullshit. Can't wait to see how fast I'll get Jingu now that I know you can Tiger Drop gunshots :black101:

Brawler's the best style for a while since it's a jack of all trades, but becomes basically obsolete when you max Dragon. Beast's excellent when you have environmental weapons around, and Rush's basically required against some bosses. The optimal way of fighting in Kiwami is to use the style you prefer and switch to Rush when you get stunlocked to get away, so grab the quick change skills as soon as you can, they're really dope (especially the dodge one).

I think I've finally found my breaking point with Dead Souls -- one of Kiryu's missions has you defending an entrance in a very small area against a zillion zombies and mutants, and then moves outside where you're fighting a flying prototype with two NPCs along for the ride. You have to snipe the prototype's weak spot when it perches somewhere, but zombies are boiling out all over the place and the NPCs are useless in keeping them off me and as soon as I line up the shot the prototype fires projectiles at me that mean I have to set up the shot with the sniper rifle all over again and and and ...

Grr. I'll probably try it again later and intentionally fail twice so I can switch it down to Easy and see how it goes from there.

Dead Souls would be a lot more tolerable if its gameplay mechanics were janky in the charming, Yakuza way, not the frustrating, unpolished way we got. There's a few Kiryu substories where you have to escort NPCs to the exit of the quarantine zone, but the thing is they don't die at 0 health, they just start limping really slowly, and you still have to drag their asses to the exit or you can't leave at all. To add insult to injury, the game still counts them as dead and you get a worse reward for the substory.

At least we'll always have Shotgun Majima.

Yakuza Kiwami: So where should I spend my XP? I got all the Extreme Heat attacks and they've definitely helped on bosses. I also got the one that gives you more XP for eating because I love spending XP to earn even more XP. Not sure where to go from there

I took a day off from it, and went back thinking I'd just die twice and try on Easy. I wedged myself in between a car and the wall at the end of the street, and there Asagi and Akiyama were able to keep the zombie popcorn off of me -- and they didn't really rush us too much because they couldn't "see" me. The big flying mutant still got me with some spit and sonic attacks, so it wasn't cake and pie but it wasn't that difficult either.

Just finished wrapping up the game. The final Majima bit explaining the reason he wasn't zombified was hilarious.

Amen. I'm now thinking of going back and playing premium adventure mode in the earlier games -- I didn't finish the real-estate stuff in Yakuza 0, for instance -- but I doubt I'll return to Dead Souls. By the end of my 17-hour playthrough, I was just tired of it. Goda and I ran past 99% of the zombies in the Millenium Tower.

I'm going to play some other games first, though -- and learn how to play Shoji a bit better.
