Anyway, we're sitting at Golden Corral, and I'm hating my life because I'm at Golden Corral but also aware that it's probably not as bad as working there, and I see this old couple slowly shamble over to our table. They've noticed cow orker's flight suit, and the man looks at him and seriously asks him: "Are you an astronaut?"

I try to go to The Diller Room and the Bathtub Gin Company whenever I'm in Seattle. The Diller Room still had an industry discount the last time I was there. Maybe check out Miller's Guild as well.

Just opened this week and is the snackbar offshoot of Alo (considered one of/the best of toronto). Good selection of taps. Kensington Market: Grungy area, and assorted bars. - Great spot to wander during the day and good takeout food places. - Do takeout and take it to "Thirsty and Miserable", a punk beer bar (you're allowed to bring food there). - Try and find the entrance to Cold Tea. (only go after 9pm). Enter via the mall on Kensington Ave College street: - Heavy hitter: Bar Ravel (http://www.thisisbarraval.com/) - Spanish Tapas and cocktails/wine. - Walk west from there, and there's a whole bunch of bars/restaurants you can stop into over the next ~10 blocks. Ossington Strip: Between Queen (south end) and Dundas (north end). Again, like 20 bars. Two notables (almost beside each other): - Bellwoods Brewery - http://www.bellwoodsbrewery.com/ - Great craft beers. - Reposado Bar - http://www.reposadobar.com/ - if you like Tequila. Dundas West: Between Brock/Ossington. - Lots of bars/restaurants. - 1602 Dundas W - tons of bourbon. - Black Dice Cafe - (Japanese Rockabilly bar) http://www.blackdicecafe.com/ - it's just different and sake. Bar Raval is a good spot, but if I'm going for cocktails I actually kind of prefer two of their other locations, Prettyugly and El Ray. None of them will really steer you wrong though. Also on Dundas West is the Black Hoof, Rhum Corner, and Cocktail Bar, all owned by the same people, all basically just across the street from each other. All really solid spots (Black Hoof for food, other two are more cocktail focused). Black Hoof is killer for pickles and tartar. My best friend was the sous at the New Bar Hop for a bit, it's a cool spot too, and the beer list is definitely extensive. If you end up east of the DVP (Don Valley Parkway, one of the big highways) you should hit up her new spot (I'm gonna plug it just because I can, but it's also good), Eastbound Brewing Company. It's super new, the beer is pretty decent, but the tapas/sandwich style food is pretty spectacular.

I never understood this idea that some restaurants have about never stepping outside the box, even a little bit. Yeah, if you're a BBQ joint, ordering a case of maitake shrooms might be a hard sell. And obviously, plenty of restaurants simply don't run specials for whatever reason. But something like cheese curds can go in a ton of different dishes - and poutine will fit onto almost every menu that pot roast is already on. I know we've got a number of chefs here, can someone explain it to me? Also, of course this doesn't go for Stoner Joe who works the fryer on Tuesday and Wednesday lunches because he can't be trusted to run anything else, but still.

I'm gonna guess it's because running a profitable restaurant is a nightmare enough in its own right, most non-chef owners (read: investors, front of house debutantes) just want things to work and to make money. most chef-owners either are not making much money and thus are stressed about adding more stress to their already stressful stress, or are on board with running specials and have found crew to delegate to. If someone came to me wanting to buy $200 of cheesecurds, I'd be like 'show me how you'll make us $1500 with this on top of any additional labor/food costs', and if you could, I'd be fine with it.

I was coming up with stuff that's interesting for a quick bar crawl type of thing - Raval is nice for the "wtf, there's like $1million worth of carved wood here" (and good drinks/food). In my experience, short trips are all about finding some wtf experiences to tell your friends back home. "sooo, I walked into a Japanese Rockabilly bar....and then ended the night at a place called the Bovine Sex Club drinking too much Jagermeister" Jen Agg is a personality in the industry (and bringing to light all the problems with it) and does great stuff at her places (BH/RC/CB/Grey Gardens). I don't know the East end very well, and it's changing very quickly right now. Last meal I had on that side was at Ruby Watchco. Yeah, I've read that, it's written by the guy. It's incredible, the whole restaurant chain is like a shrine to him. It's named after his dog, there are little signs talking about him and how he personally made management decisions everywhere...plus paintings of the dog, and him, and merchandise with his face on it...The text on the wiki pages is identical to the content of some of the signs. It smells a lot like he inherited a couple billion dollars and decided to build an entire regional fast food chain that sells only chicken fingers as a vanity project.
