Anyone have any input on living there? Significantly different then visiting? Where's the worst traffic? Lessons learned?

I'm a Pilot by trade, so easy access to McCarran would be nice, but not required.

Southern Highlands and Mountain's Edge are worth looking at as well.

Say what now?
I'm planning a trip for mid September. Will the pools at the hotels still be a comfortable temperature then? If so, which hotel on or near the strip has the best pool? I have booked the MGM Grand right now but can still cancel for a full refund. My main criteria is an awesome pool because my plan is to spend the bulk of the afternoon there and then go out during the evening. The MGM Grand looked cool because they have a lazy river, but Caesar's palace also looked very nice with their Roman bath theme.

For easy access to the airport, check out the Green Valley area of Henderson. It's only 15-20 minutes from the strip as well.

For 1400-1800 a month, you'll be able to rent a pretty nice condo with a pool and gated entrance or a 2-3 bedroom house. You might not even spend that much for either of those things.

I moved from Chicago to the area right about Green Valley Ranch a few years ago, here is some advice I would give.

1. Outdoor space that's covered by a balcony or pergola is way more important here because the sun destroys everything. You can't really have outdoor furniture unless it's in the shade most of the time or you cover it when not in use, so paying attention to that is more important than you think.

2. There are no plants or grass, so sound carries really, really well. Everyone has a dog, and everyone's stupid dog just sits outside and barks at everyone else's stupid dog all day long because everyone also has a pet door built into their house. It is important to pay attention to your neighbors and the pets they have, and try to figure out if it's going to be a problem before you move in.

3. The stop lights here are really loving long, all the time, and there are too many of them. This makes the proximity to highway pretty important in my book - if it took me longer than 5 minutes to get to an expressway I would eventually go crazy sitting at these stupid lights. In Chicago I often had to drive 15+ minutes to get to the highway that I needed to be on and it never bothered me like it does here with these endless left turn arrow lights.

4. Most of the A/C units are in the attic or on the roof here. If you are a light sleeper you should listen in the bedroom to the A/C kicking on and see if it's a problem. I bought a house when I moved here, and I've spent quite a bit of time crawling around my attic putting isolation pads between the furnaces and the support bars, and between the refrigerant pipes and the random wood in the attic they were rubbing up against and causing vibrations that would wake me up.

5. Plan on having some high quality 80/95% (or whatever the limit is) film put into your cars when you move here.

Generally speaking, the corners are where it's at, except the north east. Actually, you can basically avoid anything east of the strip that isn't in Henderson. North Las Vegas isn't as big as you'd expect, and the north west part (Centennial Hills, Providence, Skye Canyon) are in Las Vegas proper and often overlooked. I've been in Spring Valley for 4 of the last 6 years in a gated community. I've had about 8 packages stolen from my front porch, my back door kicked in and basically everything of value taken, neighbors parking their running cars in front of my driveway while drinking Coronas, and been called a loving racist because I asked some kids to stop throwing rocks from my property at my windows. If you move to Spring Valley, you a gigantic moron and deserve every bad thing that happens to you.

Don't move until at least one of you has a job lined up. This city is no fun when you're struggling to find work. Who you know helps, but isn't completely necessary depending on the field. She might want to think about looking at marijuana dispensaries, the colleges/universities, and other jobs. Limiting her search to only the strip is short-sighted.

If you have any vices at all, get them in check or it will ruin you. I've been here 11 years, and I could name 20 people I've known who moved here and couldn't hack it for one reason or another - gambling, 24 hour bars, drugs, parties, whatever. If you treat Vegas like living in any other city, you'll be fine.

Good advice, gracias. We're not limited to the strip, but it seems to be the most obvious given her unique credentials. No vices here - but thanks for the heads up : )

This is great, thanks. I am definitely hoping for some green, whether it's palm trees or hedge bushes. I spent 30 minutes googling tinted windows in Vegas, seems like it's pretty much mandatory.

What is the lowest crime area of Las Vegas? What are the best areas for seeing Lake Mead? Is it always packed March-October?

My impression was it's got all the stuff you could need (groceries, shopping, a few restraunts) there, and relatively crime free.

I'm looking into a remote job and might move to Vegas if I get it (cause low COL + no income tax mean I could commute into SF to hang with friends twice a week and still be on top compared to an apt in SF)

Reasonable. My wife and I are building a home in Skye Canyon right now. It's the extreme north west. It's safe because most of Vegas doesn't know it exists. Absolutely zero amenities thus far, but they're currently in year 1 of a 10 to 12 year master plan build, which includes a bunch of commercial space (including a big shopping center across the street from my community, should be done by fall '18). And it's 5 minutes from Centennial Hills, 15 minutes from Spring Valley, 25 minutes to downtown. These apartments are the only ones in the neighborhood thus far: https://www.montecitoaptslv.com but if you haven't completely settled on Green Valley, the neighborhood is worth at least a peek.

Gah last time I was in Vegas I missed Lotus of Siam, heading over again (hotel room at Encore courtesy of JaySB's site!) in two weeks and I see from facebook that their roof has fallen in!! Fingers crossed it will be a quick job. Failing that anyone got any alternative suggestions in a similar kind of price range?

Would also appreciate any bar tips. On the strip we plan to check out the usual over-priced joints - Parasol, Mandarin lounge, chandelier etc and down the old town oak and ivy, the laundry and that microbrewery.

I think they're going to be closed still. I'm actually trying to put together a pop up dinner to benefit their staff and hurricane victims in the Caribbean. Chada Street is an adequate substitute as is Chada Thai.

As far as bars, that's a good list, definitely include Herbs & Rye.

Just returned from a cheap-ish visit and easily had the best time since visiting during Halloween several years ago. The weed stores were ridiculously hard to reach by foot, (some offer a discount if you show them your receipt from uber\taxi). ReLeaf was incredibly professional and really straight-forward about their products and operations.
Only a few troubled meth heads on Fremont, but I learned craps from the grizzled veteran at the Nugget. The wife won ~$200 from four hours at a $5 blackjack table; which we were grandfathered in when they swapped it to $10.
Went to The Gun Store too. The M1 Garand and Thompson were fun as gently caress to shoot. A++ would return to Vegas in a heartbeat but would probably retain the visit to 4 days max. Walking around in 100+ degrees outside daily is no joke to some jerk from the Midwest.

Parking is comparable to any other major airport. I think long-term is like $16 a day, economy is $10 or $12 a day. Whenever possible, try to fly out of Terminal 3 - it's enormous, super clean, and rarely busy: https://www.mccarran.com/Terminals/T3 Any other airline is in Terminal 1, which can be a nightmare.

If your work will reimburse a lyft/taxi it’s close to the city. Probably cheaper than parking a car if it’s more than a few days

It’s got flights to most major destinations esp sf and la.

I live in Vegas and travel (almost) every week for work, usually Monday-Thursday. The non precheck lines can be bad but as long as you have precheck you are extremely unlikely to ever have an issue. Traffic is generally not a problem. The biggest drawback is that it's not a hub so depending on where you're traveling/how you feel about southwest you may have connections.

It was a hub for the brief-lived and now defunct National Airlines (funded in part by casinos hoping to draw people in) and was a mini-hub for US Airways for a number of years. Right now it's a hub for Southwest and to a lesser degree Spirit, although its status as a tourist destination means you'll have a lot more direct flights to/from major population areas than you'd expect from a non-major-hub airport, much like Orlando.
