SMV partnership rules, glad to see Powerbomb.TV surprise with great content so far

turn it all around

It really feels like the WWE Network caused this boom we're seeing in indie wrestling. It feels like indie wrestling has been way bigger than ever the past couple of years and I think a lot of that has to do with it being more accessible through streaming services and partnerships like the one above. I wonder if anyone in WWE thought that their own Network would have this kind of effect on the industry as a whole? Or maybe I'm just overthinking it and the "boom" would have happened either way, but it definitely feels related.

Watching you sleep.

Butt first, let's
check the feeds.

I think the problem with that is its not a wrestling streaming boom, its a technology/entertainment streaming boom. Wrestling and the Network are just a part of a much bigger change in the way entertainment is being distributed and viewed. Where exactly the Network fits into that much bigger picture and whether or not it sped up all the other indies streaming is something I wouldn't know how to figure out. But I think its logical to say that they would have gotten here eventually just like everyone else has/will. At the same time WWE was probably always going to be towards the front of the wrestling companies because of their money, resources, and needs.

don't buy it. live streaming existed long before the network and neither the technology nor the content of the wwe network has been used to the benefit of indie promotions. the boom was catalyzed by, in some order

a) social media, especially twitter and embedded gifs
b) the young bucks getting over on a national level (coincided with...)
c) pwg getting over on a national level (happened near-simultaneously with...)
d) lucha underground putting a bunch of indie stars on buzzworthy (for a time) television but contracting them so you can only see them at your local promotion
e) aj styles leaving tna and working roh/indies and then new japan
f) gfw putting wrestlekingdom on trad ppv and pushing aj styles and jim ross
g) roh getting trad ppv and aligning with a major-league promotion
h) probably years and years and years of slow growth in uk promotions. also "a strong pound" or some nonsense like that, which made it viable for uk indies to book supercards and regularly fly in your aj styleses. I don't really know where all those companies came from but they manufactured some inexplicable talent pool from the loins of like robbie brookside or some poo poo

the technological changes were inevitable, it's the confluence of talent and lucha underground/pwg/roh/new japan positioning 'indie guys' as Genuine Stars that drove people out to shows

you could also include nxt using people you could still catch at your local indie but I wouldn't rate that as quite as significant. chicago crowds for gargano and ciampa weren't significantly bigger at least

WWE's role was using indie guys as marketable stars and emphasizing their history. NXT may be a fake indie they want to claim as the most important step in a guy's career, but everyone knows where guys like Kevin and Sami came from.

I'm not sure if the fall of TNA was part of the indie rise or a consequence, but once they started their total collapse (2013-2014) it felt like the door really opened up for everybody else to be the WWE alternative.

At least to me, I have no evidence for this other than feelings.

the fall of tna is an infinite process but them losing spike and roh definitively becoming the #2 probably put a bigger spotlight on the bucks and styles there

The indies got hot and people found ways to get content to everyone sooner than like 6 weeks later on DVD.

It’s not hard to figure out guys.

Yes, streaming existed a while ago, but none of these groups had the money for the infrastructure. Now that that exists in a reliable third party form, they’re taking advantage.

NXT boosted the rep of indie wrestling even if the goal was to supplant it.

i'm not sure if they meant to turn sami? he did a respect spot with fenix after dropping the belt to him and he wasn't really a heel in the tourney. got wrecked by a heel in fact.

fenix v elgin is the big windy city classic match so you might need a heel there
