the local brewery here does a dark lager (mack håkon) and it's become my go to cos it's available everywhere and is basically the best thing they do outside of the seasonal winter beers

gun to my head I will get an old fashioned if "out and about" but never cottoned to manhattans.

usually I just repress my insatiable list for spirits while "out and about" by ordering beer or wine at restaurants and knowing I keep a stock of whiskey at home

When I worked in a bar, long before Mad Men, the old fashioned was the drink some rear end in a top hat would order when the bar was 5 deep

Worst was when their buddies or half the rest of the bar see it, ask what it is and then start a loving chain reaction of old fashioned orders. Its a good drink but gat drat if you wanna see me stir a sugar cube for five minutes ask for it when the bar is quiet.

once in amsterdam i got carded which was weird but ok whatever

it was this bar near my hostel apparently it was 21+ to keep out backpackers like ok i can relate. but the guy was fascinated with my american DL and america in general, so i told him how the subway sucks worse than bratislavas and he liked that

the place was kind of deserted so I asked if he could make a manhattan, he's like "oh yeah sure i just have to get my book!!!" in this really thick eastern european accent. (i didn't want to be a dick and ask where, all I could figure out was he was from not poland)

i don't know what he looked up, i think he gave me an old fashioned maybe but anyways he mashed up a sugar cube and is like super excited and then put in what tasted like orange bitters? or maybe it was normal bitters and the fact he literally stuck the top third of an orange (peel and all) into a wine glass

did i mention he poured all the whiskey and stuff into one of those big rear end wine glasses? yeah

but he looks at me all excited and is like "very good drink yes? like fancy american bar!" so i just kind of smilled and said yes, it is a very good fancy american drink, paid him ten euros and left

tbh it had a poo poo load of liquor in it and 10EUR was pretty cheap for the city center so i wasn't made but it was just very surreal.

I'll be glad when the ipa fad fucks off. The single nicest beer I've ever had is one of the cheapest in Scotland, cask pulled deuchars ipa: it's a fantastic summer beer but as soon as the american hop heavy trash started showing up it became harder to find in place of six bajillion ibu HOPLOCAUST TRIPLE IPA WITH BACON

i've always liked Alexander Keith's IPA, which is a mass-market beer that's been around in canada forever ("gimme a keets") and doesn't taste anything like a modern hop nuclear ipa. it's old enough that the cans still have a little explanation on the back of what an india pale ale is

it's probably nothing fancy but it's a good summer drinkin' beer for me. they also make a decent amber one
