I think backwards compatibility has become less of a must-have feature for consoles now that 1) the last two generations have each lasted 8 years or more, and 2) publishers have discovered that you can rerelease old games as $20 HD remasters for very little overhead and consumers will mostly be happy to buy them over and over. Or you can simply play on the PC, which has always been backwards compatible and will be for all eternity.

In general but there's a lot of older PC games that are close to impossible to get to run on modern systems. Including ones that Steam still sells.

Imo PS4 is a ridiculously better console than Xbone at this point but let's not pretend BC doesn't kick rear end and that PS4's total lack of it doesn't suck. It's at least 50% of the reason I keep my xbox one plugged in.

Yeah and if they just rereleased those games with a couple quick and dirty fixes any entry-level programmer could make and marketed it as a 20 dollar "remaster" a nonzero amount of people would probably pay for them rather than going through the trouble of downloading all the fan patches.

A majority of games that's worth the time is on GoG or for games like NOLF are easily found and have user patches to play. I'm playing though it currently just fine in wide-screen and everything. This just isn't that true unless you find some obscure game you're not gonna really play anyway. That's what blows me about BC, people ask and ask and when it happens nobodys playing that poo poo anyway. Who really asked for BC Jade Empire or KotR in the year 2017 like any PC can't run it better and smoother and be gotten vastly cheaper. It's not even like the games are lost forever, they're still playable on PS3 and 360. I hook them up all the time to play JSRF and the Jak collection. Then you get stuff like the Bayonetta ports where all 3 console ports have their own problems and the only true way to play is the PC one.

It's hard to care about BC on the Xboner when you know most games won't appear due to licensing issues.

Before the PC remaster the 360 was the definitive way to play Bayo, it was actually one of the best things about that system.

360 and WiiU Bayonetta ports are both fine and the WiiU version has objectively more content than the other versions, I just managed to land a PC Master Race-er

It still had frame drops, screen tearing, and was blurry and ugly as hell. On xbone it has delay issues. I've brought the game like 6 times between 4 ports and played the poo poo of it. Some of that might not matter to casual players but in games like that where your gonna be looking at it and playing it til your eyes bleed its really annoying. Compare to DMC4 where it is pretty much perfect on any system and the only advantage PC has is mods and higher framerate RBX fucked around with this message at 10:58 on Nov 4, 2017 |

PS2 BC on the PS4 with digital copies would be the greatest. I like revisiting my childhood 🤷🏻♂️ I was gonna get a cheap Wii U just to make it a Nintendo box. But they are still charging $10-$20 for ancient games 😱

There are some PS2 classics on PS4, but you have to buy them again. Does the Xbox One read Original Xbox discs for the newly compatible titles?
|
# ? Nov 4, 2017 23:47 |

Yup E: I think the mechanism behind the scenes is the same as 360 BC which is that is uses the disk to verify the DRM but then downloads and installs the specially packaged game files from the internet.

Hell the Xbox one now has the definitive edition of deadly premonition. It runs like poo poo on ps3 and it can straight up crash on certain pcs and nobody knows how to fix it. If they can give backwards compatibility for decades of games and keep games running really stable and performs better every console iteration, it's gonna be really appealing in the console space. I have a Xbox one s and I kind of want to get the one x on sale. To play ninja Gaiden black at the best looking possible.
